wellboring machines; and it consists in the frame A, having standards Aand A2, designed to furnish elevated bearings for pulleys A, for carrying rope A4, platform B, actuating cog- Wheel C, cylindric journal D, having iiange D', disks or washers D3 and E, auger-holder C2, shaft Gr, pinion H, guide-wheel a, .cam- Wheel h, having clutch b', clutch-wheel C', lever I, dog J, guides j, spring df', adjust-able shaft K, swivel L, reel M,4 augenl, spiral earth-elevator P, and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and described.

Fig. 6 is a detail showing the spiral earth-elevator, and Fig. 7 is a detail plan View of the clutching and releas- In constructing the frame of my machine I project from frame A the inclined standard A and bolt it at top to the coincident stand ards A2, the latter having .pivoted therein the pulleys A, and additionally strengthen the derrick thus formed by means of the kneebraces R, which are bolted thereto and to frame A. In the center' of platform B is rigidly secured the cylindric vertical journal D, having cast integral therewith the iiange D', which is bolted to the platform, the journal projecting through the circular opening D2 in the center of the` actuating cog-Wheel C.- A disk or washer, E, is rigidly secured to the under face of the actuating cog-WheelG, and it slides in practice upon flange D3. In the upper face of the actuating cog-wheel G is provided the notch e, for reception of the au- 5o ger-holder C2. The anger-holder C? has slot G3 formed in its enlarged end orhead and also eye C4, by means of which and staple Git is secured to actuating cog-wheel C. The teeth of the actuating cog-wheel@ mesh in the teeth corresponding shoulder, provided on clutchwheel C, which latter is rigidly secured to the end of a coincident longitudinallyadjustable shaft, K, having its bearings in the transverse bars h and h2. The shaft K is adjustable longitudinally, in order that clutch-wheel C', which is rigidly secured thereto, may alternately clutch against the shoulder b and `be released therefrom.
The operation is as follows: The machine is operated by means of horse-power applied to the whiflletree-arm N of cog-wheel G, and this power is conveyed by means ofthe rigid pinion Hto shaft G, which has rigidly secured thereto cam-Wheel b, and cam-wheel b is provided with a shoulder, b, which engages with a correspending shoulder, d, of clutchwheel G,"se cured to the adjustable shaft K; hence the rotation of shaft K also causes the rotation of the fast reel M, to which the rope A4, being secured, is wound thereon, and, as Wound, elevates the auger until the cam projection of canrwheel b, in performing its revolution,
comes into contact with dog J,which it presses back against the lever I and spring d', and thus throws clutch C and its shaft K out of gear with `cani-wheel I), and in thus releasing shaft K and its reel, auger C falls with great Weight to the bottom of the well, and this action being performed the two shafts are again thrown into gear by action of the spring d', and in and out of gear alternately. When it is desired to lift the earth from the Well, the spiral elevator P is secured to the bottom of the auger, the lever I is pushed to one side to disengage the gearing of the two shafts, and secured in the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, by means of pin p, inserted in orifice p', and the augerholder C is caused to inclasp the hook or swivel L of the auger-holder,
in order that the auger may be revolved With the motion of the cog-Wheel G.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A Well-boring machine consisting of the 5 oylindric Vertical journal D, projecting through cog-wheel C, having notch e and arm N, auger-holder C2, shafts G and K, cam-Wheel b, engaging with clutch-Wheel C', dog J, lever I, spring d', reel M, rope A4, auger C, andthe Io pulley-frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the shafts G and K, operating in guides j, lever I, spring d', cam- Wheel'b, clutch-Wheel C', and dog J, for alternately clutching and disengaging, substantially I 5 as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the shafts G and K, having guides j, lever I, spring d', cam-Wheel I), clutch-Wheel C', dog J", reel M, rope A, guided by pulleys A3 and secured to auger 2o C, and the driving mechanism, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
