ROCK-DRILLING AND WELL-BORING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,700, dated .I uly 7, 1885.
Application filed October 14, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, LEONARD B. EMBRY, of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rock-Drilling and Well- Boring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved rock-drilling and well-boring machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view showing a portion of the derrick broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the upper end of the derrick. Fig. 5 is a view of the drop-disk for raising and dropping the drill, and Fig. 6 is a side view showing the machine used as a wellboring machine. Fig. 7 is aperspective view of the drill-rope clamp, and Fig. Sis a perspective view of the drill raising and dropping mechanism.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to machines for rock-drilling or well-boring purposes; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the base of the machine, which is secured over the place desired to be drilled or bored, upon skids or in any other similar manner, and which base is formed with an annular upwardly-facing cog-rim, B, having inside and below its inner edge an annular shoulder, C, which maybe grooved, as shown atl) in the drawings, or plain, and which forms an annular bearing for the lower edge, E, which may be grooved, as shown in the drawings, of an annular casting, F, to the upper side of which two parallel beams, G G, are secured, the said beams being connected by a number of cross,- pieces, H, and having at their middle a platform, I, having an aperture, J, in its center, which aperture registers with the centers of the annular frame and of the cog-rim. middles, and the said castings have perforated upright lips L, and the lower ends of the legs M of the derrick N are secured to these perforated lips by means of two rods, O, passed through the perforations in the lips and in the lower ends of the legs. The legs of the derrick are connected in pairs by means of crosspieces l?, and the upper ends of each pair of 6o legs are secured together with a block, Q, between them.
R is the top piece of the der-rick, and has its lower end reduced or recessed from two sides, as shown at S, and the united ends of the two pairs of derriek-legs t into the recesses in the lower end of the top piece, bearing with their uppermost ends against the shoulders T T, formed in the top piece by the recesses. The upper end of the top piece has a plate, U, pivoted upon it, to which plate the guyropes V are secured, which support the derrick. The upper ends of the legs of the derrick are secured in the recesses or notches in the top piece by means of a bail, W, which bears against the sides of the legs and of the top piece, and which bears with its closed end against the outer sides of the upper ends of one pair of legs, while the free ends of the bail are perforated and have a bolt, X, passing through them, which bolt passes through an eye, Y, in the head of a bolt, Z, which passes through the blocks connecting each pair of legs, and through the reduced portion of the top piece, and is provided with a nut at its other end, which nut bears against the end piece of the bail and prevents it from being pushed upward. Two arms, A A', project from the upper connected ends of the derrick legs, one to each side, and are supported by braces B', and provided with pulleys C in their outer ends, over which pulleys pass ropes D and E, passing inward over pulleys F journaled between each pair of legs, the one rope, D, having the sand-pump G attached to its end,while the other rope, E, has the drill H attached to it. A pinion, I', upon the innerlend of a shaft, J journaled in bearings in the cross-pieces H, between the ends of the parallel beams G, to one side of their middle, engages the cogged rim, and the shaft is provided with a cam-disk, K', near its inner end,which disk is formed with a spirallyrising shoulder, L, upon its outer face,which ICO shoulder is'adapted to engage the drill-operating rope N, which is secured to a sleeve, lll, turning upon the shaft outside ofthe disk, drawing the said rope with it for a portion of a revolution, and again allowing it to drop, a plate, N, projecting from the inner one of the I Cross-pieces H and impinging upon the periphery of the disk with its end, preventing the rope from being carried around upon the inner side of the disk and thus being wound around the shaft. The outer end of the shaft J is formed with a hal f-clutch, O', which is engaged by another half-clutch, P, upon the inner end of a shaft, Q', turning and sliding in bearings upon the crosspieces H, the said shaft forming a continuation of shaft J', and the said shaft- Q is provided with a windlass, R, upon which the drill-rope may be wound, and which shaft is provided near its outer end with a disk or pulley, S, around which a bandbrake, T, is secured, the said brake having a lever, U, pivoted upon one of the parallel beams. A lever, V', is pivotcd at one end upon one of the parallel beams, and is formed at its middle with a collar, V, which fits around the shaft between the end of the windlass and the brake-pulley, and the free end of the lever is pivoted to a connecting-rod, X, which is pivoted at its other end to the short arm of a lever, Y, pivoted upon the side of one ofthe parallel beams, the said lever, connecting-rod, and collar-lever serving to slide the shaft and engage it or disengage it with the half-clutch upon the shorter shaft J. A pinion, Z, is secured upon theinner end of a short shaft, A", j ournaled in bearings upon the crosspieces H between the other ends of the parallel bealns, the pinion being dialnetrically opposite to the pinion I and engaging the cogged rim, and the inner end of the shaft A is formed with a half-clutch, B, which may be engaged by another half-clutch, C, upon the inner end of a windlass-shaft, D, sliding and turning in bearings upon the cross-pieces H. The windlass E upon this shaft has the sand-pump rope secured to it and winding upon it, and the shaft is provided near its outer end with a disk, F, which is loosely straddled by two lugs, G, upon a curved lever, H, pivoted upon one of the parallel beams, and this lever and disk serve to throw the shaft so as to engage or disengage the half-clutches upon the outer end of the shaft- A and upon the inner end of the shaft D. One end of each of the parallel beams is provided with a ilat bail, I, upon the upper side of. the beam, and the other ends of the beams are provided with small bails or staples J and the ends of levers or bars K are inserted into the ilat bails, while rods or braces L are hooked into the small staples, their forward ends being attached to the bars near their outer ends, and these bars serve for the attachment of the single-trees of the draft animals used in rotating the parallel beams and their platform, derrick, and annular fiange or frame.
For the purpose of reducing the friction between thc lower edge of the annular casting or frame and the annular shoulder upon the base of the machine, the grooves in the said edge and shoulder are provided with antifrietion balls M, fitting in the said grooves.
The free end of the drill-operating rope N, which passes over a pulley, U, at the upper end of the derrick, is provided with a clamp consisting of two long jaws, O", which clasp the drill-raising rope E', and one of these jaws is provided with a curved plate which passes around the rear edges of the jaws and around the side of the other jaw, and by means of a wedge, P, inserted between the jaw and the outer portion of the said curved plate Q, the
jaws may be caused to clamp the drill-raising rope so that the drill may be raised or lowered as the work demands, and at the same time the drill-operating rope be secured to the drill-raising rope for the purposeI of reciprocating the drill. It will be seen that the drill may be raised by throwing the clutch of the drill-raising windlass into engagement with the clutch upon the pinion-shaft, and that the sand-pump may be raised by its windlass in the same manner.
Vhen the machine is used with an earthauger, the drill-operating rope is dispensed with, and the auger-shaft, which is lettered R, and which may consist of a number of parts for the purpose of increasing its length as the auger is forced into the ground, is engaged above the platform of the machineby a wrench or lever, S, which is secured at its outer end to one of the derriek-legs, so that the auger will be revolved when the machine rotates, and the drill-raising rope is attached to the augerbit T, so that the bit and all the sections of the shaft, which sections are loosely connected, may be hoisted out of the bore.
Having thus described my invention, I claim .and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination of the base-frame provided with the cogged rim and the annular shoulder, the annular frame turning upon the sh ouldcr, the parallel beams and the platform, the short shaft having the pinion engaging the cogged rim, the disk having the spiral shoulder and secured upon the short shaft, the rope secured to a sleeve turning upon the shaft, passing over the pulley at the upper portion of the derriek, and having means of attachmeut at the free end, and the drill, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the base-frame having the cogged rim and the annular shoulder having the groove, with the annular casting or frame bearing the frame and the derrick, and having the annular groove in its lower edge, and the anti-friction balls, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The drilling and boring machine, consisting of the base-frame having the cogged rim and the annular shoulder, the annular frame, the parallel bars having the cross-pieces and IOO having means for attaching draft-animals at their ends, the derrick-legs connected in pairs and secured together at the top, having the pulleys journaled between their upper ends, and having the arms projecting to the sides provided with pulleys at their outer ends, the short shaft having the pinion at one end, the disk provided with the spiral shoulder, and the halfclutch at its outer end, the windlass sliding and turning in bearings between the ends of the parallel beams and having means for sliding it and provided with a clutch at its inner end, the drill-operating rope secured to a"sleeve turning upon the short shaft passing over a pulley7 at the top of the derrick and having a rope-clamp at its other end, the short shaft having the pinion at its inner endV and the clutch at its outer end, the sand-pump windlass having the half-clutch at one end of 2o its shaft and having means for slidingit in its bearings between the ends of the parallel beams, the sandpump rope and the sandpump, the drill-rope winding upon the drillwindlass and passing over pulleys at the end of one of the laterally-proj ecting arms and between the ends of one pair of derrick-legs, and the drill secured to the end of the drill-raising rope, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
4. The rope-clamp consisting of two long jaws, the curved plate secured to one jaw passing around the back edges of the jaws and around the side of the other jaw, and the wedge inserted between the curved plate and the jaw, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
