To all whom it may concern Be it known Tifliu, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rock-Drills and Well -Boring Machines and Fell-Angers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification,
reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
lhe nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of certain devices so as to form a'lnachine for boring and drilling wells and sinking piping, as will be hereinafter't'ully setforth and described.

A represents the frame ofmy maclnine,which may be of any size or shape desired. At one end ofthisframe is placed the bed;piece B, upon which the mastenwheel U rests and revolves.
In the center of this bcd there is a large circular opening made, through which the angers and drills are lowered and raised, and is pro vided with a collar upon its rim, so as to receive the flangenpon the bottom ot' the mastor-Wheel O. In the master-wheel G, above the bed B, there is also an opening corresponding to that in the bed, and for the same purpose,
, as it is intended the center of the wheel shall 5 be placed over the center of the well.
Upon one side of the frame A is placed a short shaft, D,- to which the motive power is applied for running or operating the machine. To the inner end of this shaft. there is 40 attached a small cog-wheel, E, which gears in and communicates the motion to the masterwheel 0. This wheel (J is placed upon the bedpiece B in such a manner as to allow it to revolve freely around for the purpose of operat- 5 ing'the angers and drills, and also giving motion to the other parts of the machine. In order to retain this wheel in its proper position it-is cast with a circular flange upon its under side, which runs around the opening in 30 its center and fits in the neck upon the bedthat I, Joan P. The circular opening already described, in the center of the masterwheel, is provided with two semicircular doors, G, pivoted or bolted on, so that theycan be opened or closed at pleasure. A square aperture or opening is made through them, so that when closed they will grasp the shaft X connected to the auger, and as the wheel revolves the auger will thus be made to bore. As this shaft will consist of a great many pieces which will have to be secured firmly together by bolts passing through,
their ends, upon each side of this opening, there is a smalr 6 notch, so as to allow these bolt-heads and nuts to pass. iiisingirom the top of this wheel there are two upright posts or p1llars,'Z' Z, placed upon opposite sides of the opening, which catch the ends of the arm h upon the anger-shaft, and thus assist in turning and operating it.
As will readily appear. the otlicc of the doors G and the uprights Z Z is the same viz., a means for turning the auger-the first hy opcrating directly upon the -shaft X, an the second by operating upon the shaft through the arm H, adapted to slide up and down upon it. Either of these means may be employed for turning the anger, or both may be employed together without departing from my invention.
Upon the lower rim of this inastenwheel are cogs, for thepurpose of receiving motion from wheel E, and then, in turn, imparting it to wheel I.
