GARMENT PROTECTOR Filed Feb. 1, 1962 INVENTOR William D. Lenders i w.) #X
' the reference numeral 10.
United States Patent 3,167,224 GARMENT PROTECTOR Wiliiarn D. Lenders, R0. Box 595, Granbnry, Tex. Filed Feb. 1, 1962, Ser. No. 1753,497 1 Claim. ('Cl. 223-93) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment protectors, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a protective cover for garments sus pended by a hanger so as to safeguard the same against soilage by handling, accumulation of dust, and the like.
As such, the protective cover in accordance with the invention is intended to be placed over the neck and shoulders of a garment on a hanger, an important feature of the invention residing in making the cover of a configuration which closely conforms to the shape of the hanger so that the cover is neatly fitted and prevented against shifting from its proper position.
Another important feature of the invention resides in providing the top of the cover with an opening or passage for the usual hanger hook, such opening or passage being closely dimensioned so that it permits installation and removal of the cover but does not expose any significant portion of the garment to soilage.
Another important feature of the invention resides in the provision of an upstanding collar-like member at the edge of the opening or passage in the top of the cover, which collar-like member not only reinforces the edge of the opening, but also serves as a finger-piece for installing and removing the cover.
Other advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, convenient use, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the foregoing more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention will be understood from the following description taken in conjunction wtih the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like parts, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of the garment protector in accordance with the invention, showing the same in position on a garment hanger illustrated by dotted lines;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 33 in FIG- URE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in FIGURE 3.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the garment protector in accordance with the inven tion comprises a protective cover designated generally by This cover is preferably formed from thin, transparent sheet plastic material and is shaped so as to closely conform to the configuration of a conventional garment hanger 11, whereby when the cover is placed over the neck and shoulders of a garment on the hanger, it is neatly fitted and prevented from shifting out of proper position.
As shown in FIGURE 2, the cover is open along its lower edge as indicated at 12 and includes a pair of spaced side walls 13 connected by a top wall 14. The top wall 14 is provided at the raised center portion 10 of the cover with an elongated opening or passage 15 to receive the usual hook 16 of the hanger 11. The dimensions of the opening 15 relative to the hook 116 are such as to permit the cover to be passed over the hook during installation and removal, yet the opening is small enough that it does not expose any substantial portion of the garment under the cover to possible soilage.
An upstanding collar-like member 17 is provided at the edge of the opening 15 not only for purposes of reinforcement, but also to form a finger-piece whereby the cover may be handled during its installation and removal.
The member i7 is preferably made of the same material as the cover 19 and is either formed inte rally with the cover or is secured thereto by heat sealing, or the like. The cover itself may be of a heat sealed construction in regard to connection of its walls 53, 14, so that it may be contour-formed as shown without difificulty. it will be understood, of course, that the thickness of the material of the cover it} and member 17 is exaggerated in the drawings for clarity of illustration.
While in the foregoing there has been described and shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, various modifications may become apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Accordingly, it is not desired to limit the invention to this disclosure, and various modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
A protecting cover for garments suspended by a garment hanger having a suspension hook and shank depending therefrom, said protecting cover comprising an elongated cover member formed from thin transparent plastic material and having an inverted substantially U-shaped vertical cross-section with an open bottom, a pair of flat and transversely spaced side walls and a top wall coextensive with and connecting together upper edges of said side walls in transversely spaced relation along their entire length, said cover member conforming closely to the configuration of a garment suspended by the hanger, said top Wall of the cover member including a horizontally flat center portion provided with an oval shaped opening for passage of a hanger hook therethrough, and an upstanding oval fiange provided on said top Wall center porion contiguously with the edge of said opening, said flange projecting above the upper surface of said top wall center portion to surround the garment hanger hook shank in closely spaced relation above the top wall center portion and to afford a finger-piece for handling the cover, the opposite side portions of said flange being parallel with and spaced inwardly from the planes of said side walls of the cover member, whereby regions of the top wall center portion between said side walls and said opposite side portions of said flange may act to reinforce the same.
