Description

Nov. 24, 1931. J. D. CARMACK GARMENT HANGER Filed Sept. 24, 1929 V? 4/ /V M v m mm W INVENTOR ATTORNEV Patented Nov. 2 4, 1931 JULIA D. OARMAOK, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA I GARMENT HANGER Application filed September 24, 1929. Serial No. 394,895.
This invention contemplates the provision of a garment hanger, primarily designed to accommodate and support evening gowns as well as ladies suits composed of two or more pieces, the construction being such as to support the garments in a manner to prevent their casual separation therefrom, irrespective of to what degree the hanger may be tilted while handling the same.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several viewsand wherem:
Figure l is a View in elevation of 'the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a modified form. r
Figure 3 is a view of another modified form of the invention.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4= of Figure 3. a 1
Before entering into a detail description of the invention illustrated,.I desire to have it understood that the hanger is preferabl constructed from a single piece of materia and may vary in size without departing'from the inventive idea. While any suitable material may be employed, the hanger is prefer-- ably constructed of wood, and if desired the hanger may include a body portion 10, the
opposed sides of which have secured thereto in any suitable manner thin pieces of relatively hard smooth wood indicated at 11.
The body of the hanger illustrated in Figure 1 is of elongated contour as indicated at 12, while projecting centrally from the upper edge thereof is a relatively wide portion 13, substantially of triangular outline as illustrated. Projecting from the outermost edge of the portion 13 is the usual supporting hook indicated at 14:. The body portion 12 is formed with opposed slots 15 which open at the ends thereof, and these slots. can vary in length and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention. These slots are adapted to'receive shoulder straps with which evening gowns or dresses areusually provided, and in order to prevent these straps from slipping off of the hanger, thelower edge of each slot is formed with a curved projecting lug 16 which partially closes the slots at the, ends of the hanger as illustrated. While evening gowns or dresses may be suspended from this form of the invention in form of the invention is primarily intended to beused with three piece suits, including a skirt, blouse and-coat. The skirt is usually provided with tabs or tape at the waist band thereof, and-these tabs are received by the slots 15 to properly support the skirt upon the hanger. It will be observed that the triangular-shaped portion 13 is also spaced from the upper edge of the body portion 12, thereby defining slots 16, and that the upper edge of the body portion at points adjacent entrance openings to the slots are of a suflicient size to receive the garment to be supported, the curved edges cooperate w1th the inclined slotsl6 to prevent the garment from becoming casually separated from the hanger.
After the dress has been suspended from the body 12 in the manner above described, the shoulder pieces of the blouse are sl pped into the slots 16, and are supported from the upper edge of the body portion in a'manner to partly surround the dress above referred to. The coat of the suit is supported upon the substantially triangular portion 13 in the ordlnary Well known manner, andpartly covers the blouse suspended from the upper edge of the ends of the body portion are formed with in- 60 v the manner just described, this particular clined slots 20 to receive the shoulder straps of evening gowns, when its use in this capacity is desired, although this form of the invention is primarily intended to be used with a two piece suit including skirt and coat. When used in the latter mentioned capacity, the usual tabs arranged at the waist band of the skirt are received by the slots 20, while the coat is supported on the body ofthe ban er in the ordinary well known manner. 11 this form of the invention the lower edge of the slot 20 is curved outwardly and upwardly and terminates to provide a lug or pro ectlon 21 located beyond the outer extremity of the upper edge of the slot and in close proximity thereto, to prevent the garment from slipping off of the hanger, should the latter be tilte in any direction while handling the same.
In Figure 3 I have illustrated another modified form of the invention, which is pr marily intended to be used with evening gowns, or other similar garments provided with shoulder straps. In this form of the invention the body of the hanger indicated at 22 is of elongated contour, and has associ ated therewith the usual supporting hook 23. The body portion 22 is longitudinally slotted at its opposed ends as at 24:, each slot opening at the adjacent end as illustrated. These slots are adapted to receive the shoulder straps of the garment supported thereby, and as clearly illustrated in Figure3, the lower edge vof each slot is curved upwardly and inwardly to provide a projecting lug 25, disposed within the particular slot and in close proximity to the upper edge thereof to prevent the shoulder straps from slipping off of the hanger should the latter be tilted from its normal position. When an evening gown is suspended from the hanger in the manner described, the garment can be covered by a protecting shield in any suitable manner,\to prevent the'accumulation of dust about the passage for the purpose specified.
2. A garment hanger of the character described including an elongated body portion characterizedby slots opening ateach end thereof, lugs located at the outer ends of said slots, and a centrally located angular-shaped portion projecting from the upper edge of the body and spaced from said edge to define therewith slots inclined toward each other and opening at either side of said projecting portion. 3. -A garment hanger of the character described including an elongated body portion having longitudinal slots extending from spaced points in its length and opening at the ends thereof, lugs carried by the lower provide the slot with a restricted entr nce wall of each slot, and a centrally located JULIA D. OARMAOK.
upper portion of the garment, and this protecting shield may be supported from the upper edge of the body portion 22 as will be readily, understood. Y The upper edge is curved as at 26 to prevent the protecting material from slipping off of the hanger.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is: j
1 A garment hanger of the character descrlbed including a body portion having longitudinal slots extending from spaced points in its length and opening at each end of the body portion, and a lug carried by the lower edge of each slot and terminating in close prox1m1ty to the upper edge thereof, to
