2 Claims. (Cl. 2061.7).
The present invention is directed to improvements in the field of painting kits, of the type in which an unskilled artist is able to complete an acceptable painting merely by following simple directions. g
In recent times, many people have taken up the field of painting as a hobby because it has been made possible for them to produce acceptable oil paintings, water color paintings, and the like, without any artistic ability whatever. This has been accomplished through the medium of paint sets which include a prearranged layout on a piece of canvas or the like in which the layout is broken down into numerous numbered segments, each of the numbers corresponding to a particular numbered color supplied with the painting kit. 7 The user, in making his painting, merely follows the directions, and applies the specified numbered color to the particular area containing that number and ends up with a painting of reasonably good quality,
The present invention is directed to improved painting kits of this type and provides a complete package unit for amateur artists.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved painting kit for amateur artists.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved painting kit, consisting of a single sheet of material, suitably formed so that it provides not only the painting area but also the frame for the picture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a painting kit of the type described which also includes means for detachably securing one or more artists brushes thereto.
The painting kit of the present invention is preferably composed of a single sheet of flexible, readily severable material suitably embossed or mloded to provide upstanding portions which define a frame for the completed picture, and a relatively planar surface included within the frame upon which the painting is to be made. Means are also provided for conveniently locating the paints immediately adjacent the painting area, and also for providing a locking means which serves to detachably secure one or more brushes onto the kit.
' A further description of the present invention will be made in conjunction with the attached sheet of drawings which illustrates, by way of preferred embodiment, the novel structure of the present invention.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the painting kit of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line II-II of FIG. 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view on a somewhat enlarged scale, taken substantially along the line IIIIII of FIG. 1.
As shown on the drawings:
In FIG. 1, reference numeral indicates generally a sheet of flexible material, composed of a readily severable sheet material which may be one of a large variety of types. The sheet material may, for example, be paperboard or other reasonably flexible paper product of suitable weight. Additionally, the sheet material may consist of a molded sheet of a synthetic resin or a natural resin, in which class are materials such as celluloid, polyvinyl acetate-polyvinyl chloride copolymers, methacrylate polymers, phenol-formaldehyde condensation products,
' and the like.
3,157,177 Patented Jan. 26, 1965 Ice The sheet 10 includes a relatively flat outer marginal edge 11 forming a border for thekit. jlmmediately inwardly of the marginal edge 11 is an upstanding border wall 12 having a generally triangular configuration in cross section, as best illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawings. Inwardly of the border wall 12, and spaced therefrom by means of a margin 13,'are an outer raised portion 14 and an inner portion 16 which cooperate to define a frame for the completed picture, as best illustrated 'in FIG. 1. .If desired, the wall portions 14 and 16 may be provided with decorative lines simulating the grain work'of wood.
Included within the frame defined by the portions 14 and 16 is a generally planar picture area 17 upon which the actual oil painting or water color is to be made. The painting surface 17 is divided into a large number of segments 18 according to a predetermined design, each of the segments 18 being labeled with numbers or other indicia, with each of the numbers corresponding to a particular color. Thus, in following the plan laid out by the numbered segments 18, the user simply applies the particular color called for by the particular number involved and ultimately builds up a neat and highly pleasing picture.
The particular painting kit shown in FIG. 1 employs two painting areas, but inasmuch as both are identical the corresponding parts on each have been identified with the same numbers.
Intermediate the two picture areas are a plurality of hemi-spherical containers 21 for the particular paints to be employed in making up the two pictures. The colors themselves may be identified by a number system corresponding to the numbers applied to the segments 18 on the drawing. a 1
Means are also provided in the painting kit of the present invention for detachably securing one or more artists brushes thereto. For this purpose, the tapering wall of the margin 12 may be formed with a reentrantly inclined wall portion 22 which cooperates with a substantially vertical opposed portion 23 of the kit to provide a locking means for securing an artist brush 24 therein, as best illustrated in FIG. 3 of the drawings. The natural resiliency of the sheet ltl is sulficient to keep the brushes locked in position.
The manner of using the painting kit of the present in- 1 vention should be evident from the foregoing description. When using the painting kit, the artist merely follows the layout on the painting surface 17, by applying one of the colors of the receptacles 21 to the area indicated by the numbered segments 18. When the painting has been completed, the user simply inserts a knife or similar sharp object into the margin 13, beyond the ends of the wall 14, and severs the picture and its simulated from the sheet. Immediately after severing the pictures from the sheet, they are ready for hanging with none of the additional trouble of framing being involved.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the painting kit of the present invention provides a simple, compact kit complete as to every detail, including frames. The kit of the present invention may be easily manufactured from readily available materials. The various walls and depressions formed in the sheet may be provided by embossing the sheet in the case paper products, or by molding the sheet in the case of sheets made from natural or synthetic resins.
It will be evident that various modifications can be made to the described embodiment without departing from the scope of the present invention.
