Referring in detail to the drawings, the body portionof the davenport comprises a basal, rectangular, skeletal frame having, spaced forwardly from its rear side, an additional side beam 21. Mounting blocks 22 for parts hereinafter described, are secured between said member 21 and the adjacent rear side 20x (see FIG. 7) of the frame 20. Each end portion of said davenport frame is also rectangular, and comprises a horizontal top member 24, horizontal basal member 25, L-shaped in cross-section, and upstanding front and rear members 26 and 27. Also, across the lower portion of each end frame extends a mounting and reinforcing member 29.
In an upwardly spaced relation to the tubular pivot 66 about which it swings the davenport back 30 has swingably attached to each of its end portions by means of a pin 31a, a strap metal leg- 31 which closely overlies its back surface when not in use, butwith which is combined a swingably mounted link 32 which causes the leg to swing out to the operative position whenthe device is adjusted to the bed forming position, shown in FIG. 11; The inner end portion of each of the links 32 is swingably attached by a pin 32a to a fastening plate 33 secured to the frame member 271 This structure is shown and described in my Patent No. 2,636,187, and separately considered, forms no part of the present invention.
A rectangular track member 35 underlies the davenport when it is positioned close to a wall. This member comprises two angle iron track rails 36 joined rearwardly by an angle iron 37,1 and forwardlyiby an angle bar 38. To said bar is attached a pair of'forwardly directed, up' wardly inclined fingers 39.... wall and a collar 43c carried by the pin 43 to urge the pin toward locking position. The means for manually retracting said pin from its locking position comprises a wire rod 50 .(FIG. 6) having one end axially secured to the pin, and its opposite end fastened to one end of a lever or link 51 (see lower part of FIG. 2 the mid-length portion of which is secured to a manually turnable shaft 52.. Said shaft 52, in turn, is secured to the mid-length portion of a primary lever 53 (see "FIG. 13). One end of this lever has fastened to it an upstanding 'pull rod 54, the upper end of which is connected with a yoke 55. A block 56 secured to the adjacent portion of the frame, is positioned to form a stop for the swinging movement of said lever 53. Said yoke 55 is furnished with a handle portion 57, which is grasped by the operator and pulled upwardly to operate the .pin releasing mechanism just described, thus to release the track from the davenport preparatory to pulling the latter out from the wall.
When the davenport is moved forwardly to limit of its travelthe aforesaid pins/t3 interlock with apertured cars 44:: upstanding from the front portions of the track rails, to releasably lock the track to the davenport, so as to maintain the latter stationary in the desired bed forming position.
A foot operable means is provided to release the davenport back, this means comprising an L-shaped pedal member 60 the vertical limb 61 of which extends slidably through the already mentioned lower crosspiece 25 of the davenport. A flexible connection 62 connects said limb 61 with one arm 63 of a rockable rod 64 of a rectangular U shape, which is swingably mounted upon the crosspiece 29 of the davenport frame. To the other arm 63a of said rockable member is connected a wire pull rod 68 which is, in turn, connected to a pin 69 (FIGS. and which projects rightangularly from a shaft 70 which is carried by bearing members 71 and 72.
Said pull rod 68 extends .slidably through a tubular bearing pin 66, which co-operates with a bearing pin (not shown) at the opposite side of the structure, swingably to mount the davenport back.
Dual means having parts in common are provided for releasing the back of the davenport. One of these comprises aforesaid manually turnable shaft 76 mounted upon the back and extending thereacross adjacent thereto. This shaft is shown in FIGS. 2 and 15 provided at'its upper end with a rightangularly projecting handle 70a, which, together with the parts it operates, is shown and described in my Patent No."2,51;5,261, these parts also being described hereinafter. q
The already mentioned casters 42 and 42c support the davenport frame with its basal portion spaced sufliciently above the floor to provide room for operating the pedal 60 shown in FIG. 10 with its upstandingpart extending slidably through the horizontalportion of the frame member 25.
By preference. and as shown in FIG. 2,'the present embodiment of the invention is provided with manually operable release means some features of which are shown in my said Patent No. 2,997,340.. This release means comprises, in addition to the already mentioned shaft 70, a cross lever 75 (see FIGS. 2 and 12) to one end of which is connected a wire pull rod 76, and to the opposite end of which is connecteda wire pull rod 77, both these rods functioning in a similar manner. Thesefrods are respectively provided with tension springs 78a and 77a. Each of these rods is secured to the free end portion of a locking dog 78. Said dog swings about a pivot 79 and is of a bell-crank shape, a compression spring 80 being me'ans'for releasing Fthe davenport back for downswing provided to urge'it toward locking position, Said dog ing, shown in FIG. 2 and described in my Patent NG 2,636,187, the aforesaid shaft is provided with an ad ditional cross-lever 85, having its end portions connected with rods 86 and 87 and connected to twin locking devices 83.
A sturdy mounting of the swingable back 30 results from the tubular pivot 66 extending through an end piece 30a of the back and also through a block 30b secured to said end piece as shown in FIG. 10.
Operation.Assuming the device to be located near a wall in the davenport position shown in FIG. 1, when it is desired to change to the bed forming position the operator pulls upwardly on the 'U-shaped member 57 shown in the break in FIG. 1, thus pulling the track supporting pins 43 (see FIG. 9) to the release position. Then the davenport will be pulled out from the wall, the rear casters 42 and 42a travelling to the front end of the track while the front casters 420 travel on the floor, the davenport being thus moved far enough from the wall to allow it to be converted into a bed.
When, owing to moving the davenport away from the wall, the locking pins 45 reach the front track ears 44a they glide over the beveled portions of said ears into the apertures of the ears and releasably lock the davenport to the track so that, after it has been converted into a bed it remains stationary in the desired position.
When the davenport is moved back nearly to its original position the pick-up rod 40 (see FIGS. 11 and 13) passes under the upwardly deflected front end portions of fingers 39, and at the same time, as the davenport concludes its rearward movement, the spring loaded pins 43 (see FIG. 9) glide over. the beveled portions 44x of the rear clips 44 and then enter the apertures provided for them in said clips, making a stable, dual connection of the track with the davenport.
So far as I am aware the aforesaid track structure and the manually operable release means associated therewith is basically novel and may be advantageously applied to various bed and davenport structures beside that which has been illustrated and described.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes therein, within the scope of the claims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination, with a combined davenport and bed having a swingable back adjustable from an upstanding to a downswung position, andfront and rear casters; of a track member which, when the davenport back is in an upstanding position normally underlies the davenport with said rear casters engaging the rear portion of said track, track attaching means which at such time releasably connect both the'front and rear portion of said track member with the davenport, and manually operable means carried by;the davenport andoperable to release the; rear portion of said track therefrom, the front portion of the davenport being slidably related to said track member so that, after said manually operable track release means has been-operated the davenport may be moved forwardly over said track-till said rear casters reach its front portion, while said track member remains stationary upon' a fioor. 4 i

In an article of furniture of the kind described, a frame having a basal portion, a front and rear pair of casters carried by said basal frame portion, a track member normally underlying said basal frame portion in an attached relation thereto, said track member comprising a rail along each side in an operative relation to one or the other of the casters of said rear pair, an apertured ear upstanding from the rear end portion of each of said rails, spring loaded manually releasable locking pins carried by the rear portion of said basal frame portion, said ears having beveled portions adjacentto their apertures automatically to guide said pins into a locked relation to said apertures wheneversaid rear casters move along said track rearwardly to the limit of theirtravel, and a horizontal pickup rod carried by the front part of said basal frame, said track member having at its front end forwardly directed upwardly inclined fingers under 7 which said rod glides when the caster carrying member approaches the limit of its rearward travel;

THE COMBINATION, WITH A COMBINED DAVENPORT AND BED HAVING A SWINGABLE BACK ADJUSTABLE FROM AN UPSTANDING TO A DOWNSWUNG POSITION, AND FRONT AND REAR CASTERS; OF A TRACK MEMBER WHICH, WHEN THE DAVENPORT BACK IS IN AN UPSTANDING POSITION NORMALLY UNDERLIES THE DAVENPORT WITH SAID REAR CASTERS ENGAGING THE REAR PORTION OF SAID TRACK, TRACK ATTACHING MEANS WHICH AT SUCH TIME RELEASABLY CONNECTED BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR PORTION OF SAID TRACK MMBER WITH THE DAVENPORT, AND MANUALLY OPERABLE MEANS CARRIED BY THE DAVENPORT AND OPERABLE TO RELEASE THE REAR PORTION OF EACH TRACK THEREFROM, THE FRONT PORTION OF THE DAVENPORT BEING SLIDABLY RELATED TO SAID TRACK MEMBER SO THAT, AFTER SAID MANUALLY OPERABLE TRACK RELEASE MEANS HAS BEEN OPERATED THE DAVENPORT MAY BE MOVED FORWARDLY OVER SAID TRACK TILL SAID REAR CASTERS REACH ITS FRONT PORTION, WHILE SAID TRACK MEMBER REMAINS STATIONARY UPON A FLOOR.
