This invention relatesto a bed davenport.

Speaking more specifically,v the invention relates-,to a sofa which is provided with a swingable back carrying means. whereby it is supportable upon the-floor whenadjusted in a horizontally extending positionto convert-the sofa into a bed.

One object oftheinvention isto provide a sofa with a swingable,;horizontally. supportable back which extendsthe-entire, length of the bedor seat portion of the sofa, so that theloweringof the -back to a horizontal, position will increase the;width of the-entirebed; or seat portion.

"Anotherobject of the invention is toprovide, forv a swingable sofat back which carries legs to support it in a horizontal;position,v a combined means to hold said legs in recessesprovided for them in the sofas back.- and at the same time to latch said: back in itsiupstanding position.

Yet another-object is to provide a more simple, sturdymeans for swingably connecting a back member to the sofainsuclra manner that said member, whenin the extendedposition, will be better; supported along -its innen edge portion,

Other objects, advantages and featuresof invention will hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanyingdrawing which illustrates what at present is.deemed to be apre-v ferred embodiment of theinvention,

Referring in detail to the drawing, the sofa shown comprises a -seat--portion- 5, a pairof approximately rectangular-upstanding end pieces ii and a back member 1', the latter having the lower corner portion of each of its ends pivoted to the adjacent end member 6 by a pivot bolt 8.

The back member 1 comprises a rectangularly shaped frame having an upper side piece 9, a lower side piece Ill and at each end an outer crosspiece H and an inner crosspiece l2, the latter crosspiece being in a parallel, inwardly spaced relation to the former, thus affording a clearance I3 between said crosspieces in the upper part of which is an extensible leg l4 carried by a pivot pin IS.

A stationary latching element, preferably a staple I1 is secured to the upper back portion of each end piece, 6 to cooperate with a hook l8,

pivoted at H] to that part of the end piece H which isadjacent to said staple when the back I which is opposite to its staple-engaging portion,

is furnished with a tail-piece 2!] which, when the hook is engaging the staple to keep the backin its upwardly directed position, prevents the ad jacent leg 14 from'swinging out of thespace l3 designed to house it when the device is adjusted for use asa sofa. As best shown in Fig. 2, said tail-piece 29, is slightly arcuate so as to give it a backward deflection that will cause it more smoothly to pass over the housed leg 14, 4

Describing additional structural details, each end piece 6, as illustrated in Fig, 3, comprises spaced apart vertical side walls 6a and 61), a top Wall and a bottom wall 6d. The pivot pin 8 consists ofv a bolt which, extends through the crosspieces 'IZ'and H of the b ack member. 1;, said pin having a projecting end portion for which. the wall member 61) affordsa bearing. A washer 2|, is shown surrounding the pin, 8 and serving ".as a spacer between the end of the back member'and the adjacent end piece. 6. A'nut 8n screwedonto the bolt 8 completes this part of the. structure.

The sofa is designed to be upholstered in the usualmanner and may have the outer surfaces of its end pieces fiandback 1 covered with ornamental sheet material 22.

Preparatory to swinging the back 1 down .to convertthe sofa into a bed the hooks |3,Wi1 1i be withdrawn from the staples i7, thus causing their tail-pieces 2D to disengage the free end portions of the legs 14, so that gravity may swing said legs out of their recesses l3 into position for supporting the downswung back 7 in a horizontal position.

'What is claimed is:

1. -A- sofa having an elongated seat portion supber extending substantially the entire length of said seat portion and hinged adjacent to the back side thereof to swing from an upstanding to a substantially horizontal position and vice versa, legs having end portions pivotally attached to said back member, and latching means to at times hold said back member in an upstanding position, said latching means comprising stationary parts carried by said end pieces and movable parts carried by said back member, said movable parts, when in the latched position, overlying the hold said back member in an upstanding position,

said latching means comprising stationary parts carried by said end pieces and hooked members pivoted to said back member, said hooked members each having a hook at oneside of its pivotal mounting and a tailpiece at the opposite side thereof, said tailpieces being positionable to overlie the free end portions of said legs to keep them in an inswung relation to said back member when the hooks are in engagement with the aforesaid stationary parts of the latching means.

A sofa having an elongated seat portion supported by and between end pieces, a swingable back member comprising an elongated frame having at least two adjacent spaced apart crosspieces at each of its ends, a pivot pin projecting from each end of said frame and having a connection to the end pieces, each pivot pin being located adjacent to that side of said frame which is lowest and extending through both the crosspieces at each end of the frame respectively and projecting therebeyond into the adjacent end piece which affords a bearing for the projecting portion of said pivot pin, legs carried by the free side portion of said swingable back member, and latching means carried by the sofa to maintain said back member in an upstanding position when the device is used as a sofa.

A sofa having an elongated seat portion supported by and between end pieces, a swingable back member comprising an elongated frame having at least two adjacent spaced apart crosspieces at each of its ends, and a pivot pin projecting from each endofsaid frame and'having a connection to the end pieces, each pivot pin being located adjacent to that side of said frame which is lowest and extending through both the crosspieces at each end of the frame respectively and projecting therebeyond into the adjacent end piece which affords a bearing for the projecting portion of said pivot pin.

A sofa having an elongated seat portion supported by and between end pieces, a swingable back member comprising an elongated frame having at least two adjacent spaced apart crosspieces at each of its ends, a pivot pin projecting from each end of said frame and having a connection to the end pieces, each pivot pin being located adjacent to that side of said frame which is lowest and extending through both the crosspieces at each end of the frame respectively and projecting therebeyond into the adjacent end piece which affords a bearing for the projecting portion of said pivot pin, and latching means carried by the sofa to maintain said back member in an upstanding position when the device is used as a sofa.

A sofa having'an elongated seat portion supported by and between end pieces, a swingable back member comprising an elongated frame having at least two adjacent spaced apart crosspieces at each of its ends, a pivot pin projecting from each end of said frame and having a connection to the end pieces, each pivot pin being located adjacent to that side of said frame which is lowest and extending through both the crosspieces at each end of the frame respectively and projecting therebeyond into the adjacent end piece which affords a bearing for the projecting portion of said pivot pin, and legs carried by the free side portion of said swingable back member.

The subject matter of claim 3 and, said latching means comprising stationary parts carried by said end pieces and movable parts carried by said back member, said movable parts, when in the latched position, overlying the free end portions of said legs to maintain them in an inswung relation to said back member.

8. The subject matter of claim 3 and, said latching means comprising stationary parts carried by said end pieces and hooked members pivoted to said back member, said hooked members each having a hook at one side of its pivotal mounting and a tailpiece at the opposite side thereof, said tailpiece being positionable to overlie the free end portions of said legs to keep them in an inswung relation to said back member when the hooks are in engagement with the aforesaid stationary parts of the latching means.
