The invention consists essentially of the novel features of construction as pointed out broadly and specifically in the claim for novelty following a description containing an explanation in detail of an acceptable form of the invention.
The objects of the invention are to devise a couch which may be easily converted from a living room seat to a sleeping unit; to furnish a couch which will be comfortable and attractive as a day seat, and which will be equally comfortable when converted into a sleeping unit; to construct a couch in which there will be no joint in the spring when the same is converted into a sleeping unit; to minimize the number of operations required to convert a couch from a living-room seat to a sleeping unit, or vice versa; to fabricate a couch simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture; and generally to provide a couch which will be durable and efficient in its use.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the couch in a closed position as a living room seat.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the couch in an open position as a sleeping unit.
Figure 3 is an end sectional view as taken on the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an end sectional view similar to Figure 3, with the exception that the back is hinged upward and the slip cover removed.
Figure 5 is an end sectional view as taken on the line 5-5 in Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary View as taken on the line 6-6 in Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a sectional plan view as taken on the line T-1 in Figure 4.
Figure 8 is a sectional view as taken on the line 8-8 in Figure 7.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings, the couch consists of the end members or arms as indicated by the numerals l5 and I6 which are substantially supported by the bottom frame l1 and the back braces or members I 8 and I9. The bottom frame I! consists of the outer frame 20 which is rectangular and the ends of same are fixedly secured to the inner side of the end members I5 and H3. The inner frame which may be of angle iron is rectangular in form and suitably secured within the outer frame 20. The angle-iron cross members 22 are secured to the inner face of the sides Application May 8, 1947, Serial No. 746,811 1 Claim. -(o1. s 1s)' of the inner frame 2|, and are grouped in pairs. The angle iron cross members forming each pair being spaced apart so that one side of the angles are parallel to one another and the other side of the angles are in alignment with one another. Rollers 23 are rotatably mounted between each pair of angle iron cross members and extend slightly above the same.
The back brace I8 is centrally located, and secured to the rear portion of the end members [5 and I6. This back brace I8 is adapted to provide a stop for the back rest or back formation 24 which is pivotally secured to the end members l5 and l 6 by means of the pins 25 and 26, respectively. The stop strip I9 is adjacent to the rear side of the outer frame 20 and is secured to the lower portion of the end members l5 and I6;
This stop strip i9 extends upward above the outer frame 20 and provides a stop for the seat formation of the box spring 2'! and the mattress 28. This box spring 2'! supports the mattress 28, and the former is adapted to slide inward and outward with respect to the couch on the rollers 23.
In converting the couch to a sleeping unit the back 24 is hinged upward, the slip cover 29 is removed from the mattress 28 and the box spring 2'! and mattress 28 are then moved outwardly with respect to the couch. The back 24 is then hinged downward and rests on the rear portion of the mattress 28. The weight of the back 24 resting on the mattress 28 is adapted to hold the box spring 21 in either a closed or open position with respect to the couch.
What I claim is:
In a couch, a bottom frame comprising an outer frame and an inner frame, end members supported by said bottom frame, a back br ce connecting said end members, said outer frame of said bottom frame being rectangular and fixedly secured at the ends thereof to the inner side of each of said end members, said inner frame being of angle iron construction and rectangular in form and suitably secured within said outer frame, angle iron cross members being secured at the ends thereof to the inner face of the sides of said inner frame, said angle iron cross members being grouped in pairs, said angle iron cross members forming each pair being spaced apart from one another so that one side of the angles are parallel to one another and the other side of the angles are in alignment with one another, rollers rotatably mounted between Said angle iron cross members forming each pair and extending thereabove, a back rest extending between said end members and being supported cured to the lower portion of said end members,
said stop strip extending above said outer frame, a seat formation consisting of a box spring and a mattress supported thereon, said box spring sliding inward and outward with respect to the couch on said rollers and said stop strip determining the rearward movement of said box spring, said back rest being permitted to hinge upward on said pins thus releasing said mattress on said box spring and permitting the latter to be moved outwardly with respect to the couch, and said back rest being hinged downward and rearward thus engaging said mattress on said box spring and accordingly holding the latter in either an open position or a closed position with respect to the couch.
