9 Claims.
It is one of. the-more important objects of the present invention to combine these separate parts to function as a single unit, either as a leg or asa catch. In this respect it is a further object to simplify and reduce the number of parts and cost of manufacture by utilizing a single piece" of mechanismwhere formerly it required the use of two.
A furtherobject is to provide more positive means both for maintaining theleg in its adjusted-position-while supporting the backof-the davenport in anextended position and for maintaining the'back upright when the davenportis utilized asa seat. The latter means issupplie'd by the use-of a prong forming a part of the leg which prong engagesan eye-bolt secured in the arm rest of the davenport.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing'which illustrates what is at present deemed to' be a preferred embodiment of the invention,

Referring in detail: to the drawing, 6 indicates the back of the davenport and l thearm rest thereof. The circular body portion of the bearing H extends loosely through and projects beyond the outer face of the bracket 9, there being a deep transverse slotZD extending all the way diametrically across'the projecting portion of. the bearing I] as fully shown inFigl 5 dividing itiinto an upipersegrnent 2 I and a lower segment 2-2.

When it is desired to use the combined leg and catch as a leg the prong 28 is detached from the eye 8a by an anti-clockwise movement and the back 6 is permitted to lower to a point adjacent the floor 29 as shown in Fig. 4, during which movement the leg 30 is manually swung to a perpendicular position with the back and the end of the leg adjacent the slot 26 is projected into the bore l9 until the inner end of the leg seats in the depression [6, the elongated slot 26 providing for this telescopic seating of the pivoted end of the leg, the frictional contact of the leg in the bore suflicing to maintain the leg thus positioned without endangering it dropping by gravity while the back is further lowered to the point wherein the foot 3| of the leg rests upon the floor 29 in a temporary locked condition.
When it is desired to adjust the back to its upright position and lock it so, the back is elevated sufficiently far to withdraw the leg from its tele- 'scopic relation with the bore I9 and recess I6 and at the completion of the up-swung movement the leg is rotated in a clockwise direction during which movement the prong is simultaneously fed into the eye opening 8a.
It will be seen that the eye-bo1t 8, functions as a latch element, with which the legs laterally extending catch arm or prong 28 co-operates. swingable leg consists of a single straight run and said prong is spaced a considerable distance from the attached end of the leg, being located between the free end of the leg and the axis about which it swings. These co-operating catch and latch elements may be varied as to their details, without departing from the scope of the claimed invention, provided they are related to the leg and back of the davenport in the manner which has been described.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the subject matter claimed.
" What I claim is:
1. In a davenport having a swingable back and an upstanding arm rest at each end of said back,
abearing member carried by an end portion of 'said back and having a socket directed into the back in relation to the rear surface thereof, a leg slidably pivoted to said bearing member and thereby rendered adjustable between two posii jects laterally therefrom in a spaced relation to "the ends of the leg, and an eye-bolt, carried by said arm rest to receive said prong.
2. In a davenport,,a frame including laterally spaced arm rests, a back hinged to said frame and swingable upwardly within said arm rests and rearwardly to horizontal position, an eye-bolt secured to the inner end portion of each of said arm rests, a bracket secured to each end portion of said back, a bearing rotatively mounted in each This said bracket, a leg for each of said brackets including a foot, pivoting means securing said leg to said bearing for both lateral and longitudinal movement in relation thereto, said bearing being provided with a slot to accommodate said lateral movement and with a bore to accommodate said longitudinal movement, and a catch carried by each said leg engageable in the eye of the adjacent eye-bolt to maintain the back upright when the davenport is to be used as a seat.
3. The subject matter of claim 2 and, means to rotatively mount said bearing in said bracket, said means comprising a flange surrounding said bearing adjustably mounted in a recess in said bracket, and a plate provided with a depression and joined to said bracket in such a manner that said depression forms a continuation of said bore.
4. In a davenport having a back swingable from a horizontal to an upstanding position and vice versa and an upstanding arm rest at each end of said back, a bearing member carried by an end portion of said back and having a socket directed into the back in relation to the rear surface thereof, a leg having a longitudinal slot through one of its end portions, a pin carried by said bearing member and having a working fit in said slot so that said leg is thereby rendered adjustable between two positions in one of which it can have its attached end portion projected axially into said socket so that it is usable to support said back from the floor in a downswung position and in the other of which positions it overlies the adjacent end portion of the arm rest at that end of the structure, and latching means comprising two cooperating members, one carried by said leg and the other by said arm rest whereby said leg in the latter position is connected with the adjacent arm rest to prevent the down-swinging of the back.
5. In a davenport, a frame including laterally spaced apart arm rests, a back hinged to said frame and swingable between said arm rests from a horizontal to an upright position and vice versa, a bracket secured to each end portion of said back, a bearing rotatively mounted in each said bracket, a leg for each of said brackets, and pivoting means securing said leg to said bearing for both lateral and longitudinal movement in relation thereto, said bearing being provided with a slot to accommodate said lateral movement and with a bore to accommodate said longitudinal movement,
6. The subject matter of claim 5 and, a latching member secured to the inner end portion of each of said arm rests, and means carried by each said leg and operatively connectable with said member to maintain said back upright when the davenport is used as a seat. 1
7. The subject matter of claim 5 and, a plate member carried by said back rearward of said bracket, said plate member having a socket directed into said back in relation to the rear surface thereof, said socket axially alining with said bore.

The subject matter of claim 5 and, a plate member carried by said back rearward of said bracket, said plate member having a socket directed into said back in relation to'the rear surface thereof, said socket axially alining'with said bore, each said leg in its laterally adjusted position overlying the adjacent end portion of the arm rest at that end of the structure, and latching means carried by each said arm rest whereby said leg in the latter position is connected with 5 the adjacent arm rest to prevent the down-swinging of said back.
9. The subject matter of claim 5 and, means for rotatively mounting said bearing in said brackets, said means comprising a flange surrounding the bearing and adjustably mounted in a recess in the bracket, a plate provided with a depression and joined to each said bracket in such a manner that said depression forms a continuation of said bore, each said leg in its laterally ad justed position overlying the adjacent end portion of the arm rest at that end of the structure, and latching means carried by each said arm rest whereby said leg in the latter position is connected with the adjacent arm rest to prevent the 15 downswinging of said back.
