United States Patent 3,164,051 PGSITIONING DEVICE Harrison Dunham, 71 Symphony Road, Suite 3, Boston, Mass. Filed Apr. 13, 1961, Ser. No. 102,704 3 laims. (Cl. 83441) This invention relates to a positioning device, especially one to position a sheet of paper or other material.
One object of my invention is to provide a positioning device which has a guide member that will receive and serve as a guide to position a sheet of paper in a predetermined position.
Another object is to provide such a device with a punch locating member, which, in cooperation with said guide member, enables a person to instantly place a punch in predetermined position to thereby punch a hole in a sheet of paper in a predetermined position or positions.
A further object is to provide such a device that is simple to use and economical to manufacture, so that it is within the ability to use, and also the price range, of most persons.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.

FIG. 1 is a top plan view of my positioning device.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 1, with the addition of a sheet of paper and a punch member shown in position of use, punching a hole in said sheet.
As illustrated my positioning device has a backer or base to which is attached a guide member 12 having a back 14 an upper portion of which is attached to said base, and the lower portion of which is unattached or free so as to be movable away from said base 10. Said guide member back 14 terminates at the bottom in a fold 16 and also at one side in a side fold 18, which folds connect said back 14 to a front 20, thereby providing a unitary guide member.
These two folds serve as stop guides, since a sheet S, to be punched, is received in the guide member 12 between said back 14 and front 20 and preferably only when its side edge contacts said side fold 18 and its bottom edge contacts said bottom fold 16 is it in correct position to be punched.
At the front of my positioning device is a punch locating member 22 which is attached to said front 20. It is preferably spaced from the lower edge of said base 10 so that the latter provides a sliding portion 24 for a punch member P before it reaches said locating member 22.
Formed in said locating member 22 are guide cutouts 26 which are of rectangular shape, as shown, and preferably are of such size that said punch P slidably fits within each of them. Punch holes 28 are shown in said guide member at said cut-outs 26, which pass through the back 14 and the front 20 thereof since these will be made in the first punching operation.
To perforate a sheet S, it is slid between the front 20 and back 14 of said'guide member until it contacts said folds 16 and 18. This is the easiest way to correctly position said sheet S so that the punch holes will appear at predetermined points. Said punch P is slid upon said base sliding portion 24 and under said guide member back 14 and front 20, which, as aforesaid are unattached to said base 10 at their lower portions. The sliding of said punch continues until it reaches the inner edge of a said cut-out 26, whereupon it is actuated to punch a hole in said sheet S.
This hole-punching may continue in whichever cutouts 26 are chosen, which depends upon where it is desired to have the punch holes in the sheet S made.
Ordinarily it is not necessary to first punch holes in the portions of said guide member 12 that are opposite said cut-outs 26 before using my positioning device. However, said guide member 12 may be formed of so tough or non-perforable material, such as pressboard, for instance, that a perforating punch cannot make a hole therethrough, hence said holes 28 could then serve as exact positioning guides. In this event a hole can be punched in said sheet S only when the punch P is in the exact position to permit the punch perforator to pass through said hole 28 and through said sheet.
Said base 10 and locating member 22 can be made of cardboard or pressboard, for instance, while said guide member 12 can be made of paper material, and be suitable, hence the production cost of my device is very low.
Said guide member 12 could be the exact size of the sheet to be punched if desired, so that one would know, when it is out of sight, that it is in correct position in said guide member, ready to be perforated.
What I claim is:
1. A positioning device comprising a base, a guide member having a portion only above the bottom thereof attached to said base and having a fold at one side and at the bottom, said bottom fold and a portion of said guide member above it being free of said base, and a locating member attached to said guide member and movable therewith and having a guide cut-out therein extending from the bottom edge thereof inwardly and opposite a lower portion of said guide member adapted to receive a punch member, the bottom edges of said guide member and said locating member being in substantial horizontal alinement, whereby said punch member is adapted to punch a hole in a predetermined position in a sheet extending into said guide member and opposite said cut-out.
2. A positioning device comprising a base, a guide member embodying a back and a front that are joined by a fold at one side only and at the bottom, said guide member front and back being unattached at the top and at one side, a portion of said back above the bottom thereof being attached to said base, said bottom fold and a portion of said back and front above it being free of said base, and a locating member attached to said front and movable therewith and having a guide cut-out therein opposite a lower portion of said guide member and said bottom fold, said guide cut-out being adapted to receive a punch member whereby the latter is adapted to punch a hole in a predetermined position in a sheet extending into said guide member and opposite said cut-out.

Claims (1)

1. A POSITIONING DEVICE COMPRISING A BASE, A GUIDE MEMBER HAVING A PORTION ONLY ABOVE THE BOTTOM THEREOF ATTACHED TO SAID BASE AND HAVING A FOLD AT ONE SIDE AND AT THE BOTTOM, SAID BOTTOM FOLD AND A PORTION OF SAID GUIDE MEMBER ABOVE IT BEING FREE OF SAID BASE, AND A LOCATING MEMBER ATTACHED TO SAID GUIDE MEMBER AND MOVABLE THEREWITH AND HAVING A GUIDE CUT-OUT THEREIN EXTENDING FROM THE BOTTOM EDGE THEREOF INWARDLY AND OPPOSITE A LOWER PORTION OF SAID GUIDE MEMBER ADAPTED TO RECEIVE A PUNCH MEMBER, THE BOTTOM EDGES OF SAID GUIDE MEMBER AND SAID LOCATING MEMBER BEING IN SUBSTANTIAL HORIZONTAL ALINEMENT, WHEREBY SAID PUNCH MEMBER IS ADAPTED TO PUNCH A HOLE IN A PREDETERMINED POSITION IN A SHEET EXTENDING INTO SAID GUIDE MEMBER AND OPPOSITE SAID CUT-OUT.
