No. 882,413, new Patent No. 3,llll,399, dated Aug. 28, 1%2. Divided and this application Oct. 16, 1961, Ser. No. 146,077
3 Claims. (Cir 248-20) This invention relates to sewing machine carrying cases of the type comprising two separate parts, viz., a moldable or castable base member and a cover member, the base member being arranged to support a sewing machine and the cover member being arranged preferably to rest on the base member and to cover the sewing machine, and this invention more particularly relates to molded or cast bases for such carryingcases.
This application is a division of our co-pending application, Serial No. 802,413, filed March 27, 1959, now United States Patent No. 3,050,899.
Objects of the invention include providing an improved molded or cast base for sewing machine carryin cases, an improved resilient means for mounting a sewing machine in a base, and an improved sewing machine carrying case base which will be light in weight, rigid in corn struction, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, as will here inafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby, will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
FIG. 1 is an external perspective view of a sewing machine carrying case having a molded or cast base embody ing the present invention, dash-dash lines of FIG. 1 showing a sewing machine housed in the carrying case,
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view of the base member and a portion of the cover member of the carrying case shown in FIG. 1, the sewing machine being shown in elevation,
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a perspective top view of the base member shown in FIGS. 13 inclusive, and
FIG. 5 is a bottom perspective view of the same.
The sewing machine carrying case, shown in the drawings, includes a molded or cast base member 16 and a cover member 17. A rim 18 extends completely around the upper outer boundary of the base member 16 and this rim 13 receives the lower edge of the cover member 17. The base member 16 carries, at its opposite ends, a pair of keepers 1919 held in place by a plate 21 and screws 2222. When the cover member 17 rests on the rim 13 the keepers 19T 9 may be engaged by a pair of latches 2323 secured to the cover member 17 by a plate 26 and screws 2'7-27. The cover member has a pick-up handle 36 by use of which the carrying case can be picked up when the latches 23-23 engage the keepers 1919.
The base member 16 comprises a substantially horizontal bottom wall 28 from a central portion of which rises an upwardly convergent frusto-conical member 2? the upper fiat terminal end 31 of which is apertured at 32. The base member also has a front wall 33, a single left end wall 34, an inner rear Wall 36, an outer rear wall 37, an inner right end wall 38, and an outer right end wall 39. The base member 16 also has a top wall 41 substantially surrounding an opening 42 and which, except for a cutaway 4-3, is bounded by the previously 3,152,496 Patented Dec. 22,1964.
side rear face of the panel 44,15 connected to the front:
face of the outerrear wall 37 by a pair ,ofjspaced ribs 43 and 49. The right face of the inner right end wall,
38 is connected totheleft face ofthe outer rightend wall 39 by a pairof spaced ribs sl and 52 The bottom wall 28 is provided with apertured footings 53 for accommodating screws holding four resi lient feet 56 to the lower. surface of thebottom wall 23., Inside the basemember .16 (FIG. 4) there are provideda plurality of crossing ribs57, 58, 59 and" The ribs 57 sand58, are spaced an d extend down the inside surface offront wall 33, along bottom wall 28 and up the ginside surface of the panel 44. The ribs 59 and 61 are spaced and extend down the inside surface of left end wall 34, along bottom wall 28, and up the inside surface of the inner right end wall 38. Both upper ends of each of the ribs 57, 53, 59 and 61 are equipped with yoke-shaped resilient pads 62 (FIG. 2) on which the bed 63 of the sewing machine 64 rests. The upper portion of each of the walls 33, 34, 37 and 39 is provided with outwardly positioned overhanging aprons three of these being designated by numerals 73, 74, and 77, and each of these aprons form a downwardly open cavity, three of these cavities being indicated by numerals 83, 84, and 87.
The subject carrying case is used in the following mannot. When it becomes desirable to transport a sewing machine 64 in the carrying case, the latches 2323 are disengaged from the keepers 19-19 and the cover member 17 is lifted free from the base member is by means of the handle 3%. Then the bed 63 of the sewing machine 64 is placed on the upper surfaces of the resilient pads 62. When the sewing machine 64 is properly located, a threaded hole 161 formed in a lug 192 which depends from the lower surface of the bed 63, registers with the aperture 32. Then, by reason of the downwardly open space provided by the frusto-conical member 29, a threaded shank 103 of a screw 194, having a roughened head 1% is passed through the aperture 32 and screwed into the hole lill. Because the head 1196 of the screw 1% is disposed below the flat end 31, the sewing machine 64 and the base member 16 are securely fastened together. Thereafter the cover member 1'7 is placed over the sewing machine 64 and on top of the base member 16 in such a manner that the lower edge of the cover member 1'! rests on the rim 18. When this is accomplished, the latches 23-23 are closed and the carrying case 16-17 and sewing machine 64 are picked up as a unit by use of the handle 30.
liavin thus disclosed the nature of the invention, what we claim herein is:

A base for a sewing machine, comprising an integrally molded or cast member having a bottom wall, a front wall, a left end wall, a rear wall, and a right end wall, each of said walls being formed integral with at least one adjacent wall; a vertical rib extending outwardly from the inside surface of said front wall and from the inside surface of said rear wall; a vertical rib extending outwardly from the inside surface of said left end wall and from the inside surface of said right end wall, each of said ribs being formed integral with the wall from which it extends; and a resilient pad carried on the upper end of some of said vertical ribs, said pads providing cushioned support for a sewing machine.
2. A base for a sewing machine, comprising an integrally molded or cast member having a bottom Wall, a front wall, a left end wall, a rear wall, and a right end 3 Wall, each of said Walls being formed integral with at least one adjacent wall; a vertical rib extending outwardly from the inside surface of said front Wall, from the inside surface of said bottom Wall, and from the inside surface of said rear Wall; a vertical rib extending outwardly from the inside surface of said left end Wall, from the inside surface of said bottom wall, and from the inside surface of said right end wall, the ribs intersecting and both ends of each of said ribs extending up wardly, each of said ribs being formed integral with the wall from which it extends; and a resilient'pad carried on the upper end of some of said vertical ribs, said pads providing cushioned support for a sewing machine.
3. A base for a sewing machine carrying case, said base comprising an integrally molded or cast member having a bottom wall, a front wall, a first end wall, a rear Wall, an inner end wall located at the opposite end of said base from said first end wall, an outer end Wall spaced from said inner end wall, each of said walls being formed integral with at least one adjacent Wall; a rib connecting said inner end wall to said outer end Wall, a
rib protruding from the inside surface of said front Wall, a rib protruding from the inside surface of said first end wall, a rib protruding from the inside surface of said rear Wall, a rib protruding from the inside surface of said inner end Wall each of said ribs being formed integral With the wall from which it protrudes, and a top wall connecting said inner end Wall to the outer end wall and said top wall being formed integral with the rib connecting said inner end Wall to said outer end wall and with at least one of said walls.
