State Unite This invention relates to sewing machine carrying cases and more particularly to a means for holding a sewing machine attachment box inside the cover of a carrying case, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive means for holding a sewing machine attachment box against the inside surface of the cover of a sewing machine carrying case.

With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby, will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

FIGS. 1 and 2 are fragmentary vertical sectional views taken through the cover of a sewing machine carrying case showing means, embodying the present invention, for securing an attachment box to the inside surface of said cover. Referring more specifically to the drawings, the invention is disclosed as embodied in the cover 16 of a sewing machine carrying case. This cover 16 may be similar to the sewing machine carrying case cover shown in United States Patent No. 2,856,726 and comprises a horizontal top wall 17, two end walls, only one, viz. wall 18, of which is shown, a front wall 21 and a rear wall 22. The two end walls converge upwardly and the front and rear walls also converge upwardly. The corners of the cover 16 are strengthened by a plurality of fillet braces, some of which are indicated by numerals 19. The upper surface of the top wall 17 carries a handle, not shown. Each of the end walls of the cover 16 carries a latch 23 (only one being shown) having a wedge-shaped nose 24 and an operating handle 25. The latch 23 may be similar to the latch shown in United States patent application No. 731,549, filed April 28, 1958, now United States Patent No. 2,966,377.

The present sewing machine carrying case cover 16 is provided with a plurality of members which extend widthwise of the cover 16, that is from the front wall 21 to the rear wall 22. The first of these members is a spacer block 26 which extends upwardly from the bottom 27 of the cover 16 to the top surface or shelf portion 28 of said block 26. At a position centrally spaced between the walls 21 and 22 the block 26 carries a metallic plate 29 held in place by screws 31, the plate 29 being apertured to accommodate the nose 24. The second of these widthwise members is an L-shaped angle strip 32, which has a horizontal flange 33 and a vertical flange 34. This strip is glued to the block 26 in such manner that the upper surface of the flange 33 is in the same plane as the top surface 28. The flange 34 extends above the top surface 28. The third of these width- Wise extending members is a bar 36 having a bevel 37. One unbevelled face of the bar 36 is glued or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the end wall 18 at a location approximately three-quarters of the way from the bottom 27 to the top wall 17. The upper end 41 of an elastic tape 42 is secured to the inner surface of the end wall 18 by means of a short block 43 which is glued or otherwise secured to the wall 18. The other end of the elastic tape 42 is apertured and the aperture lined with a metallic buttonhole-shaped eyelet 44. The eyelet is applied to the tape 42 in such a manner that the large portion 46 of its opening is toward the end 41 of the tape which is secured at 43 and in such a manner that the small portion 47 of its opening is toward the free end of the tape 42. The eyelet 44 is adapted to be hooked over a pin 48 carried at the center of the strip 32 and thus positioned midway between the front wall 21 and the rear wall 22.

In operation, the subject device functions in the following manner. The cover 16 is placed on a table or on the floor with its end wall 18 resting on the table or on the floor. This provides access to the open bottom 27 of the cover 16. Then the attachment box 57, indicated generally by the dash-and-dot lines of FIGS. 1 and 2 and which may be made of plastic or other suitable material, is placed with one corner 58 resting on the top surface 28 and inside of the flange 34 of the angle strip 32. A back wall 59 of the box 57 is placed against the front face of the bar 36, the elastic tape 42 stretched over one corner 61 of the box 57, and the eyelet 44 is hooked over the head of the pin 48. Because the tape 42 is elastic, the box 57 will be firmly held in place. Then the cover can be placed upright and used in a manner similar to the manner in which the cover shown and described in Patent No. 2,856,726, supra, is used. When it becomes desirable to remove the box 57, the cover 16 is again allowed to rest on its end wall 18 and the eyelet 44 of the elastic tape 42 is disengaged from the pin 48. This of course releases the box 57 allowing it to be removed from within the cover 16.

Having thus described the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:

1. Means for supporting an attachment box inside the cover of a sewing machine carrying case, said means comprising an elastic tape having an aperture at one of its ends and having its other end secured to said cover at a location adjacent to the top thereof, and means for detachably securing the apertured end of said tape to said cover at a location adjacent to the bottom thereof.

2. Means for supporting an attachment box inside the cover of a sewing machine carrying case, said means comprising a shelf block attached to said cover and located adjacent to a lower inside portion thereof; a pin carried by said shelf block, an elastic tape having an apertured member secured to one of its ends and having its other end secured to said cover at a location adjacent to the top thereof, said apertured member being adapted to be hooked over said pin thereby causing the elastic tape to hold said attachment box within the cover of said sewing machine carrying case.

3.
