NUT-CRACKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 16, 1911. Serial No. 649,662.
tion is to provide a nut cracking device consisting of comparatively few parts that can be easily assembled.
Another object of this invention is to provide a nut cracking device constructed upon the principle of a punch for crushing and cracking the shell of a nut.
A further object of this invention is to provide a nut cracking device than can be safely used and manufactured at a comparativelv small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construetion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the nut cracking device partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the nut cracking device taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device showing the plunger or punch rod in a lowered position,
andFig. 4: is a bottom plan view of. the
plunger or punch rod.
The reference numeral 1 denotes an ob-.
longbase plate having the top thereof pro* vided with a central recess or pocket 2 adapted to receive the nut to be cracked.
The sides or ends of the base plate 1 are provided with sockets 3 for the lower ends of oppositely disposed vertical uprights 4, The lower ends of the uprights 4 are secured in tne sockets 3 by screws 5 or other fastening means extending through said uprights into the base plate 1. j The upper ends of the upri hts 4 extend into sockets 6 provided therefor in the under side of a cross head 7, and-the upper ends of said uprights are secured within the sockets 6 by detachable screws 8 or other fastening means.
The cross head 7, intermediate the ends thereof, has a vertical opening 10 for a plunger or punch rod 11. The upper end of the plunger has a punch head or button 12 and encircling said plunger, between the head 7 and the head 12, is a coiled spring 13.
The lower end of they plunger 11 has a transverse slot 14 for a guide bar 15 that is retained in engagement with the plunger by a. screw 16 or other fastening means. The ends of the transverseguide'bar 15 extend into vertical grooves 17 provided therefor in'the confronting faces of the uprights 4. The exterior lower end of the plunger or punch rod 11 has an integral inverted cupshaped cracking head 18, said head having a central socket 19 for the shank 20 of a cracking tool or chisel 21. The shank 20 is frictionally held within the socket 19 and the cracking tool is adapted to crack the shell of a nut while the head 18 inclosing the nut, besides assisting in crushing the shell, prevents particles of the shell from being thrown from the base plate 1.
The plunger of punch rod 11 is provided with a notch 22 intermediate the ends thereof and adapted to engage in this notch 1s a hook 23 pivotally connected to the under side of the cross head 7, said hook retalning the plunger or punch rod in a lowered position, with the spring 13 under tension. When the plunger or punch rod is in this position, the device can be easily packed or stored away without occupylng a large space.
The device in its entirety is made of light and durable metal and is susceptible to --ornamentation, whereby it will present a neat appearance upon a dining table.
What I claim is In a device of the character described, a stationary and a shiftable recess member, one cooperating with'the other, the recesses of said members opposing each other, one of said members adapted to support a nut,
Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
means for shifting the other of said memmoved to extend around the nut supported bers toward the nut supporting member to by the other of said members. 10 extend over the nut, and a splitting device In testimony: whereof I afiix my signadetachably secured centrally of said shiftture in the presence of two witnesses.
able member and provided with an edge I FRANK KOGUT. lying within the recess of said member and Witnesses: 4 capable of contacting with the nut to split CHARLES SLAFF,
-it when the shiftable member has been Gnmn DUBY.
