RING FOR SPINNING AND T T MES AND TRAVELLER FOR THE A Filed Nov. 26, 1962 INVENTOR 6 l Zwmmeou ATTORNEY;
United States Patent 3,159,963 RING FQR SPINNING AND TWISTING FRAh ES AND TRAVELLER FGR THE SAME Grigory Nickolajevich Zakharov, Sirotsky Pereuloh 17,
Apt. 76, Moscow, U.S.S.R. Filed Nov. 26, 1962, Ser. No. 244,537 4 Claims. (Cl. 57-119) The present invention relates to spinning and twisting machines, and more particularly has reference to the structural details of the rings and travellers for such machines.
As is well known, the rapid wear of rings and travellers in spinning and twisting machines-is largely due to the high specific pressure of the traveller on the ring which is conditioned by the very small contacting surface between these components. In order to increase the contacting surface, it has been proposed to provide rings with an internal hyperbolic working surface for assuring complete contact therewith of the rectilinear working section of the traveller during operation, and a reduced specific pressure of the traveller on the ring. ,The above arrangement tended to reduce wear and elevate the rotational speed of the spindle.
A salient object of this invention is to provide means for increasing the contacting surfaces of the ring and traveller thereby reducing the specific pressure of the traveller on the ring and obtaining a greater stability in operation.
Another object of the invention is to facilitate the setting and removing of the traveller with respect to the ring.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention comprehends a tapered ring provided with an external conical rim for holding a traveller which is defined by a substantially U-shaped member and when the traveller is placed over the ring, one of the legs thereof makes contact with the hyperbolic working surface of the ring while the end of the other leg is inturned with such inturned portion preventing the traveller from leaving the ring.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent-to one skilled in the art from the following detailed description and annexed drawing, in which drawing the sole figure is a vertical sectional view of a ring and traveller according to the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, a ring and a traveller co-' operable therewith are indicated generally 1 and 2, respectively. The ring 1 has top and bottom ends 3 and 4 and the interior thereof is provided with a hyperbolic surface 5 which extends from the bottom end 4 to upper point 6. The upper end 3 is defined by the arc of a circle 6-7.
Exteriorly, the ring 1 is formed with three tapered surfaces 5, 9 and 10 and the surfaces 9 and'lll are perpendicular. The tapered surfaces 8 and 9 constitute a rim for retaining the traveller 2 on the ring as will later be more fully described. A flange 11 is located between areas, there are no points of contact between the traveller 2 and the ring 1.
The inturned portion 15 of the leg 13 contacts the tapered surface 9 of the ring only in those situations where, during starting or stopping of the machine, the
traveller is moved upwardly. The contact between the traveller and the ring underuniform pressure along the leg 12 is realized by a corresponding choice of hyperboloid parameters,
It has been demonstrated by extensive tests of the present invention during the spinning and twisting of wool that by virtue of reduced specific pressure of the traveller on the ring and stability of operation, the wear resififice of the rings has been increased five-fold as compared to rings provided with horizontal rims, and the life of the traveller also augmented approximately seven to ten times.
The present ring and traveller also reduce yarn breakage by 15-20% and permit the speed of spinning and twisting wool to be raised by 20-25% without ring lubrication. The travellers are capable of operating without lubrication at a linear speed of 45-50 m./sec., whereas the customary C-shaped traveller would immediately burn modifications may be made therein so long as such changes mark no material departure from the spirit and scope the tapered surface 10 and the bottom end 4 to allow the ring 1 to be attached to a suitable support.
The traveller 2 is a substantially U-shaped component and includes legs 12 and 13 joined along an arc of a circle as indicated at 14. The legs 12 and 13 are arranged in parallelism with the free end of the 'leg 13 being inturned to define portion 15 which lies perpendicular to the leg 13. Also, it will be noted that the leg 12 is of greater length than the leg 13.
During operation, the leg 12 makes contact at uniform pressure along its length, with the hyperbolic surface 5 of the ring down the generatrix of the hyperbolic straight line whereby the traveller 2 is inclined forward in the of the appended claims.
