Description

(No Model,)
' E. G. FITCH.
WATCH MOVEMENT BOX.
No. 315,755. Patented Apr. 14, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
EZRA. G. FITCH, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-MOVEMENT BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,755, dated April 14, 1885.
(No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern Be it known that I, EZRA G. Frron, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of lllassachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Boxes for \Vatch Movements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a box adapted to hold watch-movements before they are placed in their cases, and to protect the movements from shocks and jars incident to transportation and handling.
To these ends the invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of my improved box with a watch-movement contained therein. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the box with its two parts separated.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I construct a box of paper or other comparatively yielding material adapted to deaden shocks or j are, said box being composed of a receiving portion or holder, 2, and a cover, 3.
To the interior of the holder 2 is closely fitted a sheet-metal lining, 4, the upper edge of which is lower than the upper edge of the holder 2, and constitutes a shoulder, 5, on which a shoulder on the movement a may rest, as shown in Fig. 1, the movement being thus supported, so that it does not touch the bottom of the holder. The shoulder is of such height that the dial of the movement supported thereby will be flush with the upper edge of the holder. The cover 3 is formed to fit closely the external surface of the holder, and is provided with an internal shoulder, 6, which is preferably a ring of paper or other like material glued to the inner surfaces of the cover. The shoulder 6 is of such size that when the cover is in place on the holder said shoulder will bear upon the margin of the dial and hold the movement closely against the supporting-shoulder 5 in the holder. The shoulder 6 bears only on the margin of the dial, as shown. The movement is therefore grasped and held only by the margin of the dial and the shoulder under the dial, all other portions of its surface being free from contact with the box and cover, so that the hands and dial as well as the exposed parts at the back of the movement cannot be injured by contact with the box.
The cover and holder are provided with outwardly-projecting flanges 7 7.
G represents an inclosing-box of sheet metal, in which the holder and cover are placed. The flanges 7 7, projecting outwardly from the sides of the holder and its cover, prevent the sides of the inclosing'box from coming in contact with the sides of said cover, so that in case the inclosing-box is knocked or jammed at its sides the space between its sides and the holder 2 will in a great measure protect the latter and the movement it contains. The spaces above and below the movement between the bottom of the holder and the top of the cover protect the upper and lower surfaces of the movement.
The comparatively yielding or elastic material of which the holder and its cover are made, together with the vacant spaces almost entirely surrounding the movement, constitute efiectual safeguards against shocks and jars on all sides of the movement.
I claim 1. A watch-m ovenient-holding package composed of the holder 2 and its cover 3, composed of paper or other like material, and provided with the outwardly-projecting flanges 7 7 of the same material, and the metallic box c,formed to receive and tit closely against the flanges 7 7, and having a diameter greater than that of the holder, whereby a space is formed between the box and holder, as set forth.
2. A watch-moveme 1t-holding package composed of the holder 2- and its cover 3,c0n1posed of paper or other like material, and provided, respectively, with the shoulders 5 and 6, and with the outwardly-proj acting flanges 7 7, and the metallic inclosing box c,formed to receive said holder and cover. as set forth.
In testimony whereof I havesigned my name to this specification,in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of September,
EZRA G. FITCH. W'itnesses:
E. A. MARsH, D. H. CHURCH.
