CARLOS H. SMITH, OF ELGIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATCH-MOVEMENT BOX.
'P'ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,097, dated December 13, 1892.
Application filed June 10, 1892. Serial No. 436,402- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARLOS H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Movement- Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom- Io panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my box, a portion of the cover and side wall being broken away. Fig.2 is a like view of the inside box and its cover separated from each I5 other. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the washer employed between the cover of the inside box and the dial of a watch-movement, and Fig. 4 is a central cross-section of the holding device containing a movement.
Letters of like name and kind refer tolike parts throughout the several figures.
The design of my invention is to enable a watch-movement to be securely and easily inclosed for transportation; and to such end my said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the carrying of my invention into practiceI employ a metal box A,which, preferably,
has a square form with rounded corners and is provided with a cover A, that when placed upon said box has its position determined by a rib a, which extends around the sides and receives the lower edge of said cover.
Within the box Ais a second box B, that is round in plan View and has formed upon the upper portion of its sides a screw-thread b,
which thread is preferably formed by the bending or grooving of the sheet metal of which the box is constructed, and is adapted to receive a correspondingly-threaded cover D, that upon its upper side is provided with an elevated part CZ, as shown. The bottom of said box B is cut away, as shown, so as to leave a central disk I), that is connected with the side by means of three radial arms I) and b and midway between said arms is provided with a like number of radial lugs b and b that are bent downward and then outward and rest upon and are riveted to the bottom of the box A, where they act as yielding supports for the box B. Upon each of the arms b near its outer end, is a transverse rib 12 which coincides in distance from the center with the corresponding ribs upon the other arms and is preferably formed by bending or corrugating the bottom of the box before cutting out the surplus metal.
WVithin the box B is placed a cup-shaped holder E, which is adapted to receive and contain a watch-movement F, and within its bottom has an annular groove 6, that fits over and engages with the ribs b and b and operates to hold said'cup centrally with its side wall equidistant at all points from the side wall of the box. The relative proportions of parts are such that when a watch-movement with its cup or holder is in position within the inner box B and the cover D is screwed down upon the latter said cover will bear upon the outer portion of the movement-dial and operate to confine said movement in place. lVhen thus held, it will be seen that, while the movement is prevented from independent motion, the supports of said inner box act as springs and prevent any jar or shock given to the outer box from injuriously affecting the movement.
In order that all injury to the dial of the watch-movement may be prevented by the placing of the cover of the inner box in position, I place between said parts an'annular washer G, made from paper or other flexible material, its dimensions being such as to prevent contact between the cover and dial without interference with the hands of the watch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination, the outer box having a cover, the inner box to receive a watch-move- 9o ment having a separate cover and yieldingly supported from the outer box, and the movement-holderin the inner box, the cover of the latter engaging themovement to hold it therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a casing or holder to inclose a movement, a box to inclose such holder and projections on the bottom of one part to engage recesses in the bottom of the other to center the holder within the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
3. In combination with a casing or holder to inclo'se a movement having a groove in its bottom, a box inclosing said casing or holder having a rib at its bottom to engage said groove, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. In combination with a casing or holder to inclose a movement having a groove in its bottom, the box inolosin g said casing, and the spring-arms at the bottom of the box having ribs to engage said groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In combination with a casing or holder to inclose a movement havinga groove in its bottom, the box inclosing said casing, the spring-arms attached to the box-bottom having ribs to engage said groove, and the outer box inclosing all to whose bottom said arms are also attached, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In combination with a cup-shaped holder In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of May, 1892.
CARLOS H. SMITH.
