Description

NOV. 17, 1964 BARNES 3,157,324
GARMENT HANGERS Filed Jan. 51, 1962 JNVENTOR ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,157,324 GARMENT HANGERS Epp R. Barnes, 2% Plainview Ave, Raleigh, N.C. Filed Jan. 31, E62, Ser. No. 170,084) 6 Claims. (Cl. 223-88) This invention relates to garment hangers, particularly the type having a shoulder supporting frame and a cross part for holding trousers.
One difficulty experienced with hangers of this sort is a tendency for trousers to slip off their supporting rod, and it is one object of the present invention to overcome this difficulty. It is also a desirable feature to provide for swivelling of the supporting hook, and it is an object to provide a hanger which provides this action in a structure related to the first-mentioned object. It is also an object to provide a hanger of novel construction which is reliable and flexible in use, as well as possessed of sturdiness.
These and other objects are attained by the present invention, a preferred form of which is described in the following specification, as illustrated in the drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the hanger,
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line 22 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional View, taken on the line 44 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4, showing a modification.
FIGURES 6 and 7 are fragmentary views, showing modified hanging hooks, and
FIGURE 8 is an elevational view of a door hanger for the hook.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, there is shown a supporting frame of generally triangular configuration, with shoulder portions 16), neck portions 11, a lower cross piece 12, and a hanging hook 14. The frame, as shown, is in two parts, which are symmetrical about the middle, and only one side, therefore, needs to be described. The stock 16 forming the frame is bendable, longitudinally-grooved bar, generally channel form in cross section, with a convex outer side, and a concave inner side 13. As seen in Figure 3, the member 16 is thus semi-tubular, and when the two, straight, upper terminal ends 2b are brought together within the coupling sleeve 22, they form a complete tube which journals the straight shank 24 of the hook 14. A head 26 retains the hook against withdrawal. With the parts thus coupled, the assembly is secured by staking the coupling sleeve 22, as at 28. The two parts of the bottom 12 of the frame meet in abutting relation, at 30, centrally of the frame bottom. Any convenient connecting means may be employed, including welding, but as will be seen, in the form shown, the connection is effected by structural means incident to the mounting of the trouser hanger.
The trouser hanger 32 is generally circular in cross section, and comprises a base tube 34, around which is wrapped a piece vof chrome suede material 36. The latter is of a width to substantially encircle the tube 34, and of a length to extend slightly beyond the ends of the tube, where it is tucked in. The coated tube is secured to the cross member 12 of the frame through an adapter bar 38, having a concave, lengthwise groove 48 in its upper face, concentric with the tube 34, and
adapted to clamp the free ends of the coating material 36, and'having a narrowed, lower portion, or rib 4-2, adapted to seat in the upwardly disposed groove 18 of the frame member 16. The coated tube and the saddle 3,157,324 Patented Nov. 17, 1964 "Ice form adapter are secured to the cross member 12 by means of a series of screws 44, applied from the underside of member 12, and since the adapter straddles the joint 3%, it serves to join the halves of the cross piece 12 when secured by the screws.
It will be noted that this arrangement makes possible a trouser hanger which is both longer and of greater radius than is possible with the usual hanger, especially the wooden type, and the outer coating prevents the trousers from slipping off, which is of common occurrence in known devices.
In FIGURE 6 is shown a modified hook 46, having a shank with screw threads 48, cooperating with mating threads formed in the split tube 2l 20 in the sleeve 22.
In FIGURE 7 is shown a hook 50 retained by a nut 52 received on its threaded, lower end.
In Figure 5 is shown a modified trouser bar which eliminates the adapter bar. In this form, the tube 54 is semi-cylindrical, with a diametrically disposed, fiat, lower wall 56, and depending, side skirts 58, 60. A bead 62, depending from the lower wall 56, nests in the groove 18 or frame 16, and the coating material 64 is wrapped around the lower edges of the skirts 58, 6t and is clamped in place by the outer edges of the member 16.
In Figure 8 is shown an auxiliary device which may be employed to suspend the hanger from a door. This comprises a wire element having a loop 66, adapted to receive the hanger hook 14, a vertical leg 68, a horizontal leg 79 adapted to dwell on the top edge of a door, and a depending leg '72 for keeping the device from slipping off the door.
The embodiment of the invention described herein is for illustrative purposes, and the invention should not be deemed as limited except insofar as shall appear from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A garment hanger comprising a frame of generally triangular form, said frame comprising a bar of channel shaped cross section with internally facing grooves, said bar having a pair of straight terminal sections in contacting relationship at the upper central part of the frame with the grooves mutually facing and defining a split tube, a hook member having its shank rotatably journalled in said split tube, a retaining sleeve surrounding said split tube fixing said terminal sections in place, and a trouser support carried on the base of said frame, said support comprising an inner tube, a coating of fibrous material on said inner tube, a clamping bar having a longitudinal groove concentric with said inner tube and contacting said coating, said clamping bar having a rib received in the groove of the first-mentioned bar, and screws passing through said base, clamping bar and inner tube.
2. A garment hanger comprising a frame of generally triangular form, said frame comprising a bar of channel shaped cross section with internally facing grooves, said bar having a pair of straight terminal sections in contacting relationship at the upper central part of the frame with the grooves mutually facing and defining a split tube, a hook member having its shank rotatably journalled in said split tube, a retaining sleeve surrounding said split tube fixing said terminal sections in place, and a trouser support carried on the base of said frame, said support comprising an inner tube, a coating of fibrous material on said inner tube, a clamping bar having a longitudinal groove concentric with said inner tube and contacting said coating, said clamping bar having a rib received in the groove of the first-mentioned bar, and means securing said base to said inner tube.
3. A garment hanger comprising a frame of generally triangular form, said frame comprising a bar of channel.
shaped cross section with internally facing grooves, said bar having a pair of straight terminal sections in contacting relationship at the upper central part of the frame with the grooves mutually facing and defining a split tube, a hook member with a shank rotatably received in said split tube, a retaining sleeve surrounding said split tube, fixing said terminal sections in place, and a trouser support carried on the lower crossbar of said frame, said support comprising an inner tube, a coating of fibrous material on said inner tube, mounting means associated with said inner tube and received in the groove of said base, and means securing said inner tube to said crossbar.
