IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.

Specification forming part' of Letters Patent No. 31,565, dated February 26, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SHEDD, of Ripley, .in the county ot' Brown and State ot' Ohio, liaveinvented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figurc l represents a sectional side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the saine. Fig. 3 is a. plait or top view ot' the same.

Similar letters of reference in the three gures indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to a peculiar arrangement of parts for the purpose ot adjusting the clevis so as to regulate the depth ot' plowing or to give more or less land, as may be desired.

The beam A ot' my plow is of the ordinary form and construction. To this beam the handles B are fastened by a pivot, a, passing through their frontends and through the beam, and their rear ends are supported by a bolt, b, which passes through the center ot' the crossbarc, that connects the two handles. By means ofthis bolt the handles can be adjusted higher or lower to snit persons of different stature. The lower end of the bolt b passes through the beam, and it serves to retain the rear end of the standard c, the upper portion of which divides into two arms, d e, as clearly shown in Fig. l in the drawings. The upper end otl the arm d of the standard is rounded and provided with a screw-thread, and it passes up through the beam, being astened to the same by means of a nut,f. This nut also serves to retain the front end of the brace g, which steadies the upper end ot' the bolt b and strengthens the position of the handles B. The front edge of thel arm d of the standard is curved, and it may be sharpened to facilitate the passage of the plow through sod or hard ground intersected by roots, &c.

The share ory shovel D is attached to the lower end of the standard by means of a loop or staple, 71 which is rmly riveted to the under side of the shovel, and which slips over the end ofthe standard, and it is retained by means of a wedge, fi. A shoulder, j, on the standard, which catches over the upper edge ofthe shovel, assists materially in steadying the same. By withdrawing the wedge t' the shovel cati be removed and replaced by another with little trouble.

The clevis E of my plow is secured to the beam by means of a bracket, F, which is attached to the front end ot' the beam by a pivot, 7c. The upper flange of the bracket F extends through the stirrup G, which is fastened to the beam by the bolt l, and the inner end of said flange is so arranged that it allows the bracket F to turn on the pivot 7c in a horizontal plane until one edge or the other of said ilange strikes the stirrup G on one side or on the other. The position of the bracket F is regulated by a thumb-screw, fm, which passes through a nut, n, and this nutis pivoted to the inner end of the upper ilange of said bracket, so that by turning the screw said flange is moved fi om one side ofthe stirrup to the other. By these means the clevis is adjusted so as to give more or less land to the plow. The clevis itself is attached to the bracket F by means of a screw, o, which screws into the rear end ot the clevis, so that by turning said screw the clevis is raised or lowered, as may be desired. By this arrangement the depth of plowing can be regulated with ease and facility.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'lhe airangement of the pivoted bracket F, stirrup G, and regulating-screws m and 0, to operate in combination with the clevis E, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
