ADJUSTABLE BRACKET SUPPORT Filed Oct. 30. 1961 14rf/mr f. far/son,
INVENTOR.
l/lorng,
United States Patent "ice 3,155,358 ADJUSTABLE BRACKET SUPPORT Arthur F. Carlson, South Gate, Califl, assignor to Shore- Calnevar, Inc, Paramount, Califl, a corporation of California Filed Oct. 30, 1961, Ser. No. 148,666 2 Claims. (Cl. 248-226) The present invention relates generally to supporting brackets, and is more particularly concerned with an adjustable wall bracket for releasably attaching a device to a wall surface. 1
It is one object of the present invention to provide an improved bracket support for wall mounted devices, which is so constructed as to permit the device to be plumbed and secured in adjusted position against removal from the wall.
Another object is to provide a device of the herein described character, wherein the means for supporting a device on a wall surface will be substantially concealed, but readily accessible by means of an appropriate tool to release the support means so that the device may be detached from the wall.
Further objects of the invention will be brought out in the following part of the specification, wherein detailed description is for the purpose of fully disclosing the invention without placing limitations thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of the mounting plate and the cooperable elements carried by the device to be supported on the wall;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary elevational view of the device mounted on a wall, having a portion in section showing the cooperative relationship of the parts of the support means;
FIG. 3 is a detail view showing the surface serrations on the arcuate flange of the mounting plate; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of FIG. 2, showing the interengaged surfaces of the associated flanges of the mounting plate and the device bracket.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, for illustrative purposes, the bracket support of the present invention is disclosed as being applied to a device such as a cabinet or container, as generally indicated at A, which is to be mounted on a wall surface, as generally indioated by the numeral 10. While the invention is disclosed in connection with a box or container, it will be appreciated that the improved bracket of the present invention is susceptible of general use for supporting different types of devices on a wall surface, and in its broad concept is not limited to cabinets or similar devices.
Referring more specifically to FIG. 1, the support is made up of components respectively carried by the wall The wall component is shown as com- V curved and inclined relative to the main portion of the.
mounting plate. As shown in FIG. 3, the upper surface of the end flange 13 maybe provided with transversely extending serrations 14.
At its lower end, the mounting plate 11 is provided with a linearly extending right angled flange 15, the outer edge margin of which, as indicated at 16 is downwardly deended slot 17.
. Patented Nov. 3, 1964 Considering now the parts which are carried by the device or appliance to be supported on the wall, for purposes of illustration, a back wall surface of the device, as shown in FIG. 1, is provided with an upper bracket 18 which is welded or otherwise secured to the device, this bracket having an outwardly extending downwardly inclined arcuate flange 19 of corresponding curvature to that of the end flange 13. The flange 19 may have its under surface serrated with transversely extending serrations similar to the serrations 14 of the flange 13. The flange 19 is adapted to overlie and mate with the end flange 13 of the wall plate, as will hereafter be explained in detail.
A lower bracket 20 of L-shaped configuration is welded or otherwise secured below the upper bracket. The lower bracket is provided with a right angled projecting leg 21 in which an elongate screw is mounted by securing a nut 23 to the under surface of the leg 20. The screw 22 is of the type having a head portion 24 which is recessed to receive an appropriate elongate tool which may be inserted through an opening 25 of an adjacent wall of the device for actuating the screw.
The manner in which the device is attached to the mounting plate will now be explained. Having the mounting plate secured to the wall 10 as shown in FIG. 1, the
device or appliance A which is to be attached is now placed in mounting position, as shown in FIG. 2 with the flange 19 overlying and mating with the flange 13. The screw 22 is sufliciently retracted to permit the screw shank to be inserted into the slot 17 with the head portion 24 underlying the right angled flange 15 and in a position which will permit the head portion of the screw to pass behind the outer edge margin 16 when the screw is tightened. In this position, the rear peripheral edge 26 of the enclosing wall of the dvice will engage the wall surface to orient the device with respect to the wall surface. By longitudinally shifting the flanges 19 and 13, it is possible to dispose the device in a vertical direction so that it will be plumb. Having the device in plumbed mounted position, it is only necessary now to tighten the screw 22 by means of a suitable elongate tool which may be inserted through the opening 25 into association with the head 24. By tightening the screw, the head 24 will be moved into engagement with the under surface of the right angled flange 15, and as the screw is tightened it will draw the flanges 19 and 13 into secured engagement in their adjusted position and retain the device against displacement from the wall.
In the mounted position of the appliance or device, the mounting means will be substantially concealed and secured against unauthorized detachment except by persons having a suitable tool for the purpose.
Various modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence, I do not wish to be restricted to the specific forms shown or uses mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An adjustable bracket for orienting and releasably supporting a cabinet or similar device on a wall surface, comprising: an elongate plate member adapted to be fixedly secured in an upright position to the wall surface, an arcuate integral curved flange at the upper end of said plate member extending symmetrically on opposite sides of the plate central axis, a right angled integral flange at the. lower end of said plate having an edge opening slot substantially on the plate axis, an upper bracket secured to a back wall surface of said device having a flange extending symmetrically on opposite sides of the center positioned below said upper bracket flange, a headed screw member having threaded engagement with said lower bracket and adapted to be positioned in said slot with its head portion below said lower end flange when said flanges are associated, whereby tightening of the screwtengages the head portion with thelower end flange and acts to apply tension forces clamping said curved flange and upper bracket flange in associated mating engagement to retain the device in oriented-mountedposition on the wall surface.
2. An adjustable bracket for orienting and releasably supporting a cabinet or a similar device on a wall, ac-
cording to claim 1, wherein the arcuate curved flange of the plate member and the mating bracket flange are transversely inclined and longitudinally relatively adjust-able to plumb thetsupported device with respect to the wall.
