Description

a COMPOUND MATERIAL SUITABLE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF LINED COFFEE ANDSUGAR BAGS OTHER USEFUL PURPOSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
THOMAS BBIGGS,OF MANCHESTER, COUNTY or LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
AND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,385, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed April 17, 1884. (Specimens.) Patented in England February 16. 1884, No. 3,404; in France March 19, 1884, No. 161,053, and in the East Indies January 15, 1885. 9
. To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BRIGGS, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented an I inproved Compound Material Suitable for the Manufacture of Lined Coffee and Sugar Bags and other Useful Purposes, of which the following is a'specification.
Lined coffee and sugar bags are now chiefly made of a compound material consisting of a combination of paper and a woven material madefrom jute or other similar fibrous substance, with a layer or coating of water-proof adhesive composition between them, the paper being turned toward theinner side of the bag. In the course of time, and in consequence of ropgh usage, the paper lining is liable to be comebroken, and pieces of the paper (as well as the adhesive material and the jute fibers) become detached and mixed with the sugar, cofiee, or other goods in the bag. My invention is intended to remedy this defect; and it consists, principally,in substituting a material known as union for the paper hitherto employed. This union is formed by a looselywoven cotton fabric filled with paper-pulp,the pulp being confined as much as possible to one side of the fabric, and in making the compound material for the manufacture of bags according to my invention the adhesive material is applied to the pulpy or paper side of the union, which is then combined by pressure with the woven jute or other fabric; or the adhesive material may be applied to the fabric. By these means I produce a compound material for the manufacture of bags having an exterior of woven jute or other fabric and a clean white interior surface without any loose fibers, and which will not break, and from which no paper or other material can be de cached, so as to become mixed with the sugar.
I would here observe that it will be evidentthat this same compound material can be employed for other purposes, such as for cart 45 and other covers, roofing-cloth, floor-coverings, and for various other useful purposes.
I use (by preference) vegetable pitch for the f purpose of fixing the union to the external woven fabric, as it is not only water-proof, 5( but also vermin-repellent; but any other suitable adhesive substance may be employed for this purpose.
In applying my invention to the manufacture of bags from jute or other fabric woven 5 in a tubular or seamlessform, I coat the union lining with the adhesive material, and apply it to both outsides of the woven tube, forming a lap-joint at each edge, and I afterward turnthe same inside outward, so that the union 6c forms the lining of the bag. This could not be: done with paper only without breaking the I same.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention 6; and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is, t
.The' improved compound material for the manufacture of lined coffee and sugar bags and for other useful purposes, by the combi- 7t nation (by means of a suitable adhesive waterproof substance or composition) of woven jute or other similar fibrous substance with the material above referred to and known as union, substantially in the manner and for 7 the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name a to this specification in the presence of two sub-Y scribing witnesses.
v THOMAS BRIGGS.
