Description

WHIPFLETREE. No. 815,361. Patented Apr. 7, 1885.I
INVEJvToRs UNITED STATESd PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLEs R. WALTER AND JACoB E. BLACKBURN, CE FREDERICKTCWE; oHIo. f
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 315,361, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed December 11, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, CHARLES R. WALTER and JACOB E. BLACKBURN, citizens of the United States, residing at Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improveinentsin Spring Attachments for Whifiietrees, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relatesrto spring-whiffletrees; and it` consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. l Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a top plan view of a whiffietree provided with our improvements. Fig. 2is
Y a likeview, enlarged, of one end of the whifiietree with improvements attached. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
In the three views the rear ends of the traces are shown secured to the casting on the outer end of the spring.
The letter' A represents the whiffletree, provided on `its outer ends with thimbles B. Said thimbles are each provided with a T-shaped head, C, having a slot, C', therein'for the reception of the trace I). The trace passes through this slot, and it is attached tothe outer end of a spring, to be hereinafter specilied.
E represents a casting provided with a longitudinal face-recess for the reception and retention of the inner end of the bar-spring F. The outer side of the casting E conforms to the surface Contour of that portion of the whiiietree with which it is brought in contact.
E indicates a bridge or cross-piece on the casting E, under which the inner end of the spring F rests.
G indicatesa threaded bolt and nut for securingthe spring in its seat in the casting E. The spring is provided with an opening through which the bolt passes.
G represents the clinched head of the bolt.
The bolt passes through the spring, casting E, and whifdetree. The outer end of the spring F is provided with altrace-catch, F; The outer end of this catch has an enlarged dat with a projection, H, on the rear side. This head to prevent the trace from slipping off."y the end thereof. The thimble B is provided projection is to limit the forward movement of the spring when the traces are drawn for- The thimble, slotted head C, and pro- Ward. jection H are formed integral, although the head C may be separately formed with a screw-point, whereby it may be screwed into the outer end of the whiffietree. The normal position of the spring is about an angleof forty-five degrees from the longitudinal plane fold: First, it prevents a shock when the traces are suddenly drawn forward, and, secondly,
it draws back on the traces when the vehicle is descending a hill, or the horses back. This The object of this is t,wo-`
spring, under those conditions, keeps the traces taut and prevents the trace-loops from disengagement with their respective catches. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-` y ters Patent, is y, g l. A whitdetree provided on its outer end with a slot-ted head for the reception of the trace, a spring having one end secured to the l whiftletree and the other end extending outf ward and provided with an enlarged head,
substantially as described, and Vfor the `purf` poses set forth. y 2. A whifietree provided on its outer en with a thimble, slotted head, and projecting spring-stop, said whiffletree being also provided with a bar-spring having its inner en d j secured thereto, the outer end of said spring having an enlarged head, substantially asand l for the purposes set forth. l
3. A whifietree provided on its-outer end "d l with a slotted head, the recessed casting E,.
and the barspring F, having the enlarged head-piece, the parts being united and secured in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES B.. WALTER. JACOB-E. BLACKBURN.
