GEORGE J. J OHNSON, OF MoLOUTH, KANSAS.
VEHICLE-POLE TIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed April fl 312,083.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at McLouth, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Pole Tips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pole-tips for vehicles, and has for its object to produce a device of this character which may be readily and easily secured upon the front end of the tongue of a wagon or other vehicle and which in the event of an accident whereby the pole falls to the ground will act as a slide or runner to prevent the pole digging into the ground and possibly causing a serious accident.
A further object is to produce a pole-tip to which the neck-yoke can be readily secured and which is of simple, strong, durable, and cheap construction.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization, as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents side view of a portion of a wagon-tongue equipped with a pole-tip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pole-tip detached from the tongue.
In the said drawings, 1 indicates the tongue of a vehiclesuch as a wagon, carriage, or agricultural implementand 2- indicates the pole-tip thereon. The pole-tip comprises a cylindrical body portion 3, having a longitudinal bore or passage 4 to receive the front end of the tongue. Forward of the latter the tip merges into a cylindrical stem 5, having its free end tapering slightly and terminating in a head or enlargement 6, which likewise tapers, as at 7.
At the front end of the body portion the stem is bent upward, as at 8, and then doubled back upon itself, as at 9, and has its tapered portion bending back under and substantially paralleling the body portion, the backward bends given to the stem producing what is generally termed a' gooseneck. The gooseneck projects upward above the plane of the body portion of the tip and is connected to the tip by a vertical rib 10, which acts as a brace to prevent the gooseneck from bending backward toward the upper side of the body portion, and said rib furthermore assists in preventing a lateral bending movement of the gooseneck. The neck-yoke (not shown) is adapted to engage the top portion of the gooseneck and impose strain rearwardly thereon, which strain will be resisted by said rib.
Should the front end of the pole fall to the ground and cause the tapering portion of the stem to underlie the body portion of the poletip, it will act as a sled-runner, and thus cause the pole to skid along upon the round until the movement or momentum o the vehicle is overcome, thus avoiding injury to the vehicle and its occupant or occupants, which would be incident to the sudden arrest of the vehicle by the tongue digging into the roadway.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a pole-tip for vehicles which embodies the features of advantage enumerated in the statement of the object of the invention, and it is to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a vehicle-tongue, a pole-tip secured upon the front end of the tongue and comprising a body portion merging into a stem; said stem being bent to form a gooseneck projecting upward at the front end of the body portion, and a runner underlying the body portion and forming a continuation of the front side of the gooseneck.
2. The combination with a vehicle-tongue, a pole-tip secured upon the front end of the tongue and comprising a body portion merging into a stem said stem being bent to form a gooseneck projecting upward at the front end of the body portion, and a runner underlying the body portion and forming a continuation of the front side of the gooseneck, and a brace-rib connecting the rear portion of the gooseneck with the front end of the body portion.
3. A pole-tip comprising a cylindrical body portion which tapers forwardly and is provided with a longitudinal bore or passage open at its rear end, a cylindrical stem forming a continuation of the front or tapering end of the body portion, and comprising an upwardly-projecting gooseneck portion and a runner portion which forms a continuation of the front side of the gooseneck portion and I underlies and substantially parallels the underlies and substantiallyparallels the body body portion, and a brace-rib between the portion. front end of the body portion and the rear 1 5 4. Apole-tip comprisinga cylindrical body portion of the gooseneck and integrally portion which tapers forwardly and is proformed with said portions.
