MOLDERS FLASK.
SPECQFICATSIQE'E forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,927, dated March 31, 1885.
A Application filed January 12, 1885.' (No modehl T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDVARD Fmnss, 0 Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molders Flasks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in molders flasks; andit consists, first, in the combination of a molders flask which is formed from a single piece of elastic material with an elastic adjustable frame which is applied thereto, and which is also formed from'a single piece of elastic material, so that it will conform to the movements of the flask; second, in the combination of the flask formed from a single piece of elastic material, and provided with suitable guides, with the adjustable frame provided with guiding-rods which pass through the guides; third, in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flask embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
The two parts A B of the flask are each formed of a single piece of steel, wroughtiron, or any other suitable elastic material, the two ends of which material are detached from each other and left free to spring apart whenever the latch or any other suitable fastening device, 0, is released. As here shown, a latch, O, is pivoted to one end of each part of the flask, and a corresponding latch, a, is secured to the opposite ends.
Applied to each part of the flask, either inside or out, is the adjustable sliding frame D, which can be moved by means of suitable handles, 12, which are applied to its upper edge, so as to increase or decrease the depth of the flask, according to the size of the pattern which is to be used. These sliding adjustable frames are preferably madeof the same width and depth of the flask itself, and will be raised above the parts of the flask to which they are applied for the purpose of enabling the flask to hold a greater or less quantity of sand, as may be necessary.
To each sliding adjustable frame is attached a number of bolts, F, which pass down through suitable eyes or guides, G, upon the flask, and which have nuts 0 d applied to their lower ends. The nuts 0 serve to limit the distance the frames D shall be raised upward, and the jam-nuts d serveto hold thenuts cin place. TheboltsFare rigidly secured to the ears or projections e at their upper ends, which ears or projections are formed with or secured to the frames D. These sliding adjustable frames are also made elastic, so as to be compressed or closed with the, portion of the flask to which it is attached, so that it can also be loosened from the sand whenever desired. The ends of these inner frames are preferably made to interlock, as shown, so as to cause the ends to move together when the frame is being adjusted above the top of that portion of the flask to which it is attached. The lower portion of the flask is provided upon its opposite outer sides with suitable guiding-rods, I, which pass up through the match-plate J, and thus guide, center, and hold itin position. The rods I have their lower ends passed through the ears 9, secured to opposite sides of the drag, and are then fastened in place by means of the set-screws t. The upper portion of the flask is also provided with guides L, which catch against the inner edges of these guiding-rods, for the purpose of holding the two parts always accurately in line with each other. The drag is placed upon any suitable flat surface, and the frame D is adjusted in position, so as to project above the top of the drag, according to the quantity of sand the drag requires for the castings that are to be made. For convenience, the flat surface on which the drag is placed may be under or in a screw, hydraulic, or any other kind of a press now in use. The frame D is also similarly adjusted in the cope. The drag is first filled with sand, and the match-plate is placed in position, and then the cope is filled with sand, and the flasks are then pressed together in a suitable press until the adjustable frames are forced back even with the tops of the portions of the flask: The
cope is then lifted off, the pattern drawn, and the cope is then placed back in position. By releasing the latches which hold theends of the flask together the two portions of the flask and the adjustable frames expand so as to re lease themselves from the sand, and the flask is then lifted off without endangering the mold. All of this is done without the drag being moved. The pressure being applied in the press to both ends alike, the pressure is equal on both sides of the match-plate, and
thus the plate is prevented from springing and causing unequal castings.
Each part of the flask being made from a single piece of wroughtiron or steel, is not liable to get out of order, is light, strong, durable, and the use of all hinges is done away with.
By making the two parts of the flask in the Tmanner shown a mold can be made complete in one pressing. By this construction the quantity of sand in the mold is regulated, and thus the sand is prevented from being too closely packed and thus spoiling the mold.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of a molders flask which is formed from a single piece of elas tic material with an elastic adjustable frame which is applied thereto, and which is also formed from a single piece of elastic material,
so that it will conform to the movements of the flask, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the flask formed from a single piece of elastic material, and provided with suitable guides, with the adjustable frame provided with guiding-rods which pass through the guides, substantially as shown.
3. The combination of the two parts of the flask, the frames D, placed in them, and provided with the ears or projections e, and the rods F, the guides G, on the two parts of the flask, and the nuts on the rods, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD FRIESS.
