SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,128, dated November 20, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FURMAN STOUT, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State-of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in brick-presses in which the plunger is pressed upward into the clay-mold by a cam-operating lever, which is pivotally connected by gudgeons to arms carrying the mold-cover, so as to hold the cover on the mold while working the plunger, and is provided with a toe adapted to strike a fixed bearing on the pressframe, so as to first permit the plunger to be withdrawn from the mold and then the moldcover to be raised to allow the removal of the pressed brick. The objects of my improvement are to provide for an increase of the power of the operating'lever as the compression of the clay in the mold increases the resistance to' the plunger; to facilitate the removal of the plunger, mold-cover, and operating devices for inspection or renewal; to provide for readily taking up the wear of the bearings of the lever-toe and gudgeons and of the plunger-guide, and to secure greater strength and durability,with convenience in use, than has been heretofore attained.
To this end the invention consists of certain novel combinations of parts and details of con-' struction, hereinafter fully described, and distinctly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brick-press embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is'a plan view of the same, partly in section, on the line as m, Fig. 1. The frame of the brick-press is constructed of two side standards, A, rigidly connected by end, is fixed a rectangular brick-mold, 0, open at the top and bottom, and which is formed of two opposite vertical side sections, 0, and end sections, 0, connected detachably at their abutting ends by vertical tongue-and-groove joints C'and bolts 0, passed lengthwise through the end sections and the ends of the side sections, G, as shown in Fig. 6, so that the interior of the mold can be conveniently made to conform accurately to the desired shape of the brick, and is readily accessible for repairs or refinishing when roughened or injured by hard particles in the clay treated. To theinner faces of the opposite upright frame members, A below the mold G, are rigidly secured vertical plates D, from which necks D, narrower than and formed integrally with the same, project inward and support at their inner ends a guide-block, E, formed integrally therewith, and in its front face with a vertical guideway, E, for the shank F of the plunger, the head F of which is fitted to slide vertically in the mold-chamber in the usual way.
The plunger-shank F is made T-shaped in cross-section, the body forming the head of the T being fitted to the guideway E and the tongue projecting from the front thereof. On the face of the guideblock E, at either side of the way E, are secured two detachable guidestrips, G, by locking-bolts Gr, passing through transverse slots in the upper and lower ends of the strips into the guide-block. The guidestrips G are arranged to project inward over the face of the shank-body F against opposite provided with a shoe of theordinary or any approved description adapted to ride on a cam-roller, H, which is journaled to ears formed on the head of an operating-lever, I, and the said lever-head is provided with opposite side gudgeons, I", eccentric to the camroller II, which project laterally beneath and 4 beyond the bottom members, A of the side standards, A, and are pivoted to the lower ends of the arms J, carrying the handled moldcover K. The lever-head is also formed on either side with toes 1, arranged to strike fixed bearings L on the inside of the respective standards when the lever I is swung upward to withdraw the cam-roller from the foot of the plunger, and thus to raise the-arms J and the mold-cover K, carried thereby, from the top of the mold, which is then uncovered by the cover K of itself swinging back therefrom. Each toe-bearing L is formed on the lug of a bracket-piece, L, (shown clearly in Fig. 7,) which comprises in addition thereto-a vertical shank, L", having a longitudinal slot, L, and from the foot of which the bearinglug L projects inward and rearward.
A locking-bolt, M, is passed through the vertical slot L in each bracketpiece into the standard, and an adj usting-screw, M, mounted to turn, but held from lengthwise movement,
in an eye-lug, M, fixed to the standard, is arranged to screw vertically into the upper end of the shank U, so that each toe-bearing can be adjusted vertically to the desired position and can be locked in such adjustment.
Over the lug L of each bracket-piece L is arranged horizontally the shank N of a T- piece, N, the transverse head N of which is arranged to project laterally beneath the elevated bottom member, Aiof the standard at the front end thereof, so as to form the front cheek-plate of the corresponding lever-gridgeon I". The shank N of each T-piece N has a longitudinal slot, N, through which a locking-bolt, N, is passed into the standard, and a threaded longitudinal socket, in which an adjustingscrew, N, works, its head abutting against the shank of the bracket-piece L, so that the cheek-plate can be readily and securely adjusted against the lever-gudgeon to prevent undue play of the same and to take up wear. Thecorresponding rear cheek-plate, O, of each lever-gudgeon is also made adj ustable, being formed with a longitudinally-slotted shank, O, and provided with a lockingbolt, 0, working therein, and an adjustingscrew, 0, working in a longitudinal screwsoeket in the shank O, and turning, but held from sliding, in an eye-lug, O", on the inner side of thc'standard.
The adjustable cheek-plates N and 0, projecting below the elevated bottom frame member, A, form a downwardly-opening bearing for the gudgeons, with adjustable walls, so that said gudgeon can be held properly in place, while their removal and replacement for inspection or repairs is greatly facilitated.
The moldcover carrying arm s J have threaded upper ends,J, and collars J 2 a short distance below the same, to receive and sustain the apertured ends of the cover cross-bar K, nuts K being screwed on said threaded ends above the cross-bar to secure the same.
To increase the strength of the arms J and facilitate their construction, they are each wrought in one piece with their threaded upper ends, J, their collars J", and their bossed gudgeon-receiving eyes J. j
The top of the mold-coverK is for ned with a transverse groove, K to seat and more rigid-ly secure the cross-bar K thereto.
The free end of the plunger-operating lever I is provided with an upwardly-extending curved rack, J?, the teeth of which are adapted to engage with an eccentric gear-wheel, P, fixed on the middle of an operating-shaft, 1 which is journaled transversely inthe pressi'rame, and carries at one outer projecting end a handle-arm, I, for turning it.
The eccentric gear is so arranged as to increase the effective force applied to the operating-lever I proportionately to the increase of resistance oii'ered to the plunger by the compression of the clay.
The front upper corners of the side standards, A, are beveled, and to them are attached the bearings for the shaft Q of the usual plunger-lifting tongue, Q which engages a recess in the plunger and has a handlearm, Q, for operatingit. To the said beveled corners are also fixed bearings B for a rock-shaft, R, having arms R to which a mold-table, S, is attached, so that the moldtable can be conveniently tilted forward or rearward against the mold, as desired.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a brick-press, the combination,with a frame supporting a brickqnold, a plunger, a lever for working the plunger, and an operating arm or device, of eccentric gear connecting the said lever and operating armor device, arranged to vary the effective force of the lever in accordance with the change of resistance to the plunger, substantially as described.
2. In a brick-press, the eombination,with a "frame supporting a brick-mold, a plunger, and
a lever for operating the plunger, of a rockshaft journaled to the frame, a handle-armfor turning the rock-shaft, an eccentric gearwheel mounted on the rock-shaft, and a curved rack-on the plunger-operating lever adapted to engage with the eccentric gear-wheel, substantially as described.
3. A frame for a brick-press having bearings for the gudgeons of the plunger-operating lever provided with adj ustable'side walls, substantially as described.
4. In a brick-press, the combination, with the side standards of the frame, of apair of gudgeon cheek-plates arranged to project below the bottom member of each standard and having slotted shanks,locking-bo1ts working in the slotted shanks, and adjusting-screws adapted to move the cheek-pieces toward or from each other, substantially as described.
5. A gudgeon cheek-piece formed of a transverse bearing-plate and a centrally-projecting shank formed with a threaded socket, in combination with a locking-bolt, an adjusting-screw, and a frame, substantially as described.
6. In a brick-press, the combination, with a frame, of a bracket-piece carrying a bearing for the toe of the plunger-operating lever mounted adj ustably on the frame, and adj usting devices therefor, substantially as described.
7. In a brick-press, the combination, with the side standards of the frame having fixed lugs,of bracket-pieces carrying lever-toe bearings and formed with longitudinal slots and screw-sockets, adjusting-screws Working in the sockets against the said lugs on the standards, and locking-bolts passed through the slots into the standards, substantially as described.
8. In a brick-machine, the combination of the mold-cover provided with a groove extending across its top, a cross-bar secured in the said groove, arms J, secured to said cover,
and means for operating the said arms, substantially as described.
9. In a brick-press, the combination of a mold-plunger having a shank T-shaped in cross-section, a guideblock having a way adapted to the shank-body forming the head of the T, adjustable guide-strips on the guide block adapted to embrace the tongue of the shank, and means for adjusting the guidestrips laterally, substantially as described.
10. In a brick-press, the combination of a frame supporting opposite side plates, D, and therebetween a guideway, E, for the shank of the mold-plunger, said plunger, adjustable guide-strips G on the guideway arranged to embrace a part of the plunger-shank, adjusting-screws G, working in the guide-strips and against the side plates, and screw-bolts G for locking the guide-strips in position, substantially as described.
11. A brick-press having the upper front corners of the frame beveled and provided thereat with a mold-table arranged to tilt forward and from the mold, substantially as described.
