FRANK J'. BECKER, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
MOLDING-FLASK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed March 9, 1914. Serial No. 823,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a pattern-drawing mechanism for molders flasks, being in the nature of an improvement or modified embodiment of the invention disclosed in my primary application, Serial No. 772,246, filed June 7, 1913.
The features of the invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the flask. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, partly in section, and showing the cope and matchplate in their elevated position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed section of one of the llfting jacks. Fig. 5 is an end view of the flask. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the flask with the cope removed. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detailed section on line 77 of Fig. 6.
In foundry terms, 1 represents the drag and 2 the cope of a two-part flask. I have here shown the flask separating and pattern drawing mechanism applied to a pattern carrier 3, specifically known as a matchplate. That is, one portion 4 of the pat-tern to be formed in the drag is secured to the lower face of the solid plate 3, constituting the pattern carrier, while the other pattern portion 5 is secured to the upper portion of the plate. hen a match-plate is used in a flask there will be two parting planes, the plane of contact between the sand of the drag and the lower face of the plate 3, and the plane of contact of the sand of the cope with the upper face of plate 3, and the pattern portions 4, 5 must be drawn in straight lines from the mold surfaces of the'drag and cope respectively. I have also shown provision for so adjusting the pattern-drawing mechanism that the draft may be proportionate to the length of the two pattern portions. The cope and drag are formed with corner marginal flanges 6 and 6 re spectively, constituting abutments against which the pattern drawing levers coact.
Also I provide the drag and cope with alining dowels or guide pins 7, for insuring a movement in right lines to the parting ing planes, that is, insuring the drawing of the pattern in the true line of draft.
The member 3 is formed with bearings 8, in which are mounted the rock shafts 9, having the lifting jacks 10 on the ends of said shafts, one at each corner of the flask, positioned between the flanges 6. Preferably each jack comprises a stem 11, and a telescoping split sleeve 12, on the ends of which are rollers 13. The sleeve is held in a split clamp bracket 14, clamped by bolt 15, the brackets being pinned to the ends of shafts 9, see Figs. 3 and 4. By loosening this clamp the members 11, 12 may be adjusted to bring their rollers equidistant from the rocking point or centers of shafts 9, or to make the leg extending to the cope the longer (as shown) or vice versa. As shown, the pattern portion 5 is longer than the portion 4, and, therefore, in drawing the pattern, the cope should be lifted farther from the match-plate, than the match-plate is lifted from the drag, see Fig.2. Preferably, I provide the marginal flanges 6 of the drag with up-turned ends 20 which serve as a limit of adjustment for the jacks, and I also preferably provide the index 21, enabling the uniform adjustment of all four lifting jacks. For actuating these jacks, I provide fulcrum block 16, on the sides of the pattern carrier or match-plate 3 midway between the ends of shafts 9. To this block is pivoted an actuator lever 17, the ends thereof projecting beyond the fulcrum point. The rocking brackets 14 carrying the jacks, are connected to actuator 17 by links 18. Normally the jacks are in horizontal position shown in Fig. 1, with the drag, match-plate and cope respectively contacting, the mold being formed in the flask. To draw the pattern, the actuator lever 17 is raised, the lifting jacks move to vertical position shown in Fig. 2, the drag, matchplate and cope are respectively separated each from the other, and the pattern is drawn from the drag and cope. The foundryman will understand the process of forming the mold in the flask and of uniting the mold sections after the flask parts have been separated and the pattern drawn. This member 3 with its self-contained organized mechanism is a molders appliance, adapted to be assembled into a two-part flask and contitutes an article of commerce available for use in detachable connection with two-part molders flasks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A solid plate for use in connection with a two-part molders flask and comprising separating and actuating mechanism on the edges of said solid plate adapted to cooperate with the half flasks to relatively separate them and draw the pattern.
2. A molders appliance for detachable use in connection with a two part molders flask and comprising a member adapted to be assembled with the flask structure, and having mechanism on the sides thereof adapted to cooperate with the half flasks to separate them and draw the pattern, said mechanism being adjusted to move one of said half flasks a greater distance from said member than the other half flask is moved from said member in drawing the pattern.
3. A molders appliance for detachable use in connection with a two-part molders flask, and comprising a member adapted to be assembled with the flask structure, and having mechanism on the sides thereof adapted to cooperate with the half flasks to separate them and draw the pattern, said mechanism having adjustable provision enabling a predetermined one of said half flasks to be moved a greater distance from said member than the other half flask is moved from said member in drawing the pattern.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing witnesses.
