UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN A. FONTEINE, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
HARNESS-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,821, dated lVIarch 31, 1885. Application filed ctober 31, 1884. (No model.)
To :2 whom it 71mg concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN A. FONTEINE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of a harness -pad formed with transverse slots for admitting a free circulation of air to the skin of the horse covered by the pad to prevent heating and chafing.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is aperspective view of my new and improved harness-pad.
The pad A is by preference composed of the outer surface, a, of leather, and the lining b, of felt or other suitable material, which latter is stitched at its edges to the leather (1 by the rows of stitching 0. Between the rows of stitching c the pad A is slotted transversely at intervals, as shown at d, to form ventilating-passages for the free circulation of air to and from the skin of the horse covered by the pad. The lining b and leather a are stitched around the slots (1, as shown at e,- but this may be omitted, if desired.
By forming the slots (1 through the pad the pad is perfectly ventilated, as the slots admit air to nearly the whole surface covered by the pad, and the pad, notwithstanding the slots, is of sufficient strength for all practical purposes.
I am aware of the existence of a harness-pad formed of metal with an imperforate lower surface, and with perforated raised side edges, through which the air passes, ventilating the pad itself but not the parts of the horses back covered by the pad, and of the existence of a pad comprising an upper piece and a bottom or main piece, the same having ventilating perforations or apertures distributed through their surfaces; but while this construction and disposition of parts serve their purpose measurably, they fail to secure all the benefits of this invention, which are perfect ventilation and combined lightness and strength of construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, the harness-pad comprising the. upper or main leather piece, a, and the bottom piece or lining, b, said pieces a I) having transverse ventilating-slots d, surrounded by rows of stitches e, and extending nearly the entire width and length of said pieces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HERMAN A. FONTEINE.
