(Cl. 153-15} The present invention relates to plate bending tools or brakes, such as are designed for use on a work bench, or the like, and in particular a plate bender having an elongated base with a handle pivotally mounted and transversely positioned on the base, and a stepped block or die positioned on the base and arranged to coact with the handle for bending plate.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a manually actuated platefbender, particularly designed to form roof gutters, and which is'relatively small so that it may be plate and a die or anvil on the base plate and positioned to coact with the lever for bending and forming plate.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide bender for relatively light weight stock in which the bender may be placed on a work bench or the like for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bender which is portable so thatit may readily be moved from one location to another.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a bender for sheet metal in which forming ele'inents of the bender are readily adjustable.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide a bender that is particularly designed for bending roof gutters.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal bending tool having a lever positioned to coact with a block or anvil in which the block is movable in relation to the lever to vary the form of work produced by the bending tool.
A still further object is to provide a hand bending tool which is of a simple and economical construction.
Other and further objects and advantages of the pres ent invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, drawings and claims, the scope of the invention not being limited to the drawings themselves as the drawings are only for the purpose of illustrating a method by which the principles of this invention can be applied. I Other embodiments of the invention utilizing the same or equivalent principles may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claims.

While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the above-referred-to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any manner departing from the spirit and intention of the device, which is to' be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while there is stated the primary field of utility of the invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable. I
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout, and in which the numeral It) refers to the invention in its entirety, numeral 12 indicating an elongated base of the bender having an upturned flange 14 at the back, numeral 16 indicating a lever pivotally mounted by a pin 18 and clip angles 20 and 22 on the base, numeral 24 indicating a handle on the extended end of the lever, and numeral 26 indicating a block or die freely slidable on the base and positioned to coact with the lever for forming sheet material.
The clip angles 2% and 22 are secured to the base, preferably by welding, and the base is provided with 'bolt holes 28 by which the bender may be retained on a Work bench or the like by lag screws or other means.
The block or die 26, which may be referred to as a die block, is provided with a recess 30 having a bottom 32 and inclined side surfaces 34 and 36, and the upper surface of the die block is provided with stop shoulders 38, 4t), 42 and 44. The edge of a sheet of material 46 is placed against one of the shoulders, and the lever is pressed downwardly forming the sheet of material into a gutter, as indicated by the broken lines in FIGURE 3. One corner after another is formed, as shown.
The sheet of material 46 is provided with a fold line 48 on one side and the edge is bent downwardly providing flanges 50 which are separated by slots 52; and, as shown in FIGURE 5, the slots 52 are in alignment with fold lines 54 extended transversely across the sheet of material.
The handle 24 is provided with a slot 56 into which the end of the lever 16 extends, as shown in FIGURE 2.
Operation I the recess 30, as shown in FIGURE 3. 'Both the lever and recess may be of other shapes and designs so that objects of dilferent patterns may be formed in the bender.
As an illustration, the edge 58 of the blank 46, is placed against the stop shoulder 38 of the die block. This places the blank in proper position to make the first bend along the bend lines 54, and by successively moving the edge 58 of the blank-against the stop shoulders 40, 42 and 44 the bends along the following bend or fold lines are formed.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a bender constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use, by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof,
and for this reason'I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as claimed.
. Having now described the invention that which is claimed to be new and desired to be procured by Letters Patent, is:
' In a bender for roof gutters, a frame, a first die-block mounted on said frame having an upwardly opening recess having a flat bottom wall having parallel side edges, said recess also having two side walls with straight lower edges adjoining said side edges of said bottom wall, said side walls extending upwardly divergently to each other at an angle of 90 degrees with respect to each other and each being at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to said flat bottom wall, a second die-block disposed opposite said recess in use, said second die-block having a mating surface for mating With the bottom wall of said recess when a metal gutter blank is disposed therebetween, said mating surface being flat and having a shape with parallel side edges disposed in parallelism with said side edges of said bottom Wall, said respective side edges of said second die-block mating surface being spaced apart a lesser distance than the said side edges of said first die-block botdesired widths of those outer Wall sections of a gutter outlet to be made which are disposed between beveled edges formed between said recess bottom wall and said mating surface, those stop surfaces which are closer to said recess not being in blocking position between said recess and any stop surfaces disposed farther from said recess.
