TOOL FOR BENDING- METAL CLIPS.
Application filed October 26, 1927. Serial No. 228,948.
This invention relates to tools, and especially to tools for bending or clamping metal clips about a plurality of bars.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a tool for bending and clamping metal clips, the invention being characterized by increased efliciency and power.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a clamping tool of the character described which is provided with improved removable wear parts. Other objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool showing the jaws thereof open, between which a clip and a pair of bars are illustrated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a view at right angles thereto; Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the closed positionof the tool jaws and a clip clamped about a pair of bars; Fig. 4 illustrates two views of the tool anvil; Fig. 5 illustrates two views of one of the jaw dies; Fig. 6 illustrates two views of the unbent clip; and Fig. 7 illustrates two flat bars clamped together by the clip.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing the numerals 1 and 2 indicate the two handle bars of the tool, said handle bars being pivotally mounted in a pair of opposed cheek plates 3 and 4, as hereinafter described.
The handle bar 2 may be longer than the bar 1 and is provided with the laterally projecting hook-like jaw 5 which is adapted to cooperate with the laterally projecting jaw 6 formed on the end of the handle bar 1. The cheek plates 3 and 4 are disposed on opposite sides of the handle bar ends 7 and 8, respectively, and they serve or function as a mount therefor when connected thereto by the removable pivot pins 9 and 10, respectively, which pass through suitable bearing apertures formed in the bearing sections 7 and 8, respectively, of said handle bar ends and also through suitable registering bearing apertures formed in the opposite ends of the cheek plates. Each of the plates 3 and 4 is recessed at 11, intermediate its extremities on one side thereof to receive the hardened steel wear resisting U shaped anvil 12 which spans the space between said cheek plates and may be secured The point of each of the jaws 5 and 6 may have a steel wear resisting channelled die element 17 removably secured thereon and fastened in any suitable manner as by a transverse pin 18 which may penetrate the two members. In operation, the U shaped clip 19- is placed on the anvil 12 with its, open end upward and with the two ends 20 and 21 projecting beyond the upper surface of the cheek plates and the anvil. .The two flat bars 22 and 23 are then placed within the clip.

handles 1 and 2 are substantially close together (Fig. 1), and in closing the jawsthe A end of the cheek plates which carry pin 9 and gandle 1 are swung away from the handle 2,
It will be observed that the cheek plates 3 and 4 are somewhat oval in shape and that the two bearing pins 9 and 10 are disposed in a plane which lies substantially parallel with the handle bars 1 and 2, and that the tool jaws 5 and 6 are arranged wholly laterally of said cheek plates and said plane, which is important in this tool on account of the character of the work to be done and the conditions to be met in the operation of the tool.
1. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of spaced cheek plates, a pair of handles pivotally connected with and-between said cheek plates at different points therein, each of said handles having a laterally projecting jaw, and an anvil element mounted in said cheek plates, closure of said jaws being effected by actuating said handles away from each other.
2. In a tool of the character described, a pair of handle members each of which is provided with a laterally projecting jaw, a pair of cheek plates arranged on opposite sides of said handle ends, said plates carrying a bearing pin at each end thereof and upon which said handle ends are pivotally mounted, said pins being arranged in a plane which extends substantially longitudinally of the tool unit, and an anvil carried by said'cheek plates.
3. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of handle members,
each of which is provided with a laterally projecting jaw, both of said jaws being arranged laterally of the longitudinalplane of the tool unit and upon the same side, a pair of cheek plates arranged on opposite sides of said handle ends, said plates carrying a bearing pm at each end thereof and upon which said handle ends are pivotally mounted, and an anvil carried by said cheek plates. 4. In a tool of the character described, the
combination of a pair of handle members, each of which is provided with a laterally projecting jaw, a pair of cheek plates arranged on oppositesides of said handle ends, said plates carrying a bearing pin at each end thereof and upon which pins said handle ends are pivotally'mounted, said pins beingarranged'in a plane extending longitudinally of the tool unit, and both of said jaws being arranged laterally of the longitudinal V plane of the'tool unit and upon the same side thereof, an anvil carried by said cheek plates,
and a die carried'by each of said jaws.
5. In a tool of the character described, the
combination of a pair of handles normally one above the other and normally close to-' ether, a pair of spaced cheekp'lates arranged on opposite sides of said handle ends, said cheek plates being connected together by a )air of bearing ins extendin transversel thereof, one at theo'uter .end of said chee plates and the other at the inner'end'thereof, said lower handle being pivotally'mounted upon said outer cheek plate pin and provided with a hook-likelaterally projecting j aw, said upper handle having its endpivotally mounted upon the pin connecting the inner end of said cheek plates and having a laterally .projecting aw thereon, both of 'said handle jaws being arranged laterally of the normal longitudinal plane of the tool whentthe handles are disposed close together, said cheek plates being tiltable at their inner ends and away from the lower handle when saidhandles are separated to close said jaws,and a 'U shaped anvil carried by said cheek plates.
