MHTTHEW J 55472 ATTOEA/EY United States Patent 3,132,627 MULTIPLE INDICATOR FOR CRANE BOOM Matthew J. Lesatz, 617 S. 69th St., Milwaukee, Wis. Filed Apr. 9, 1963, Ser. No. 271,686 1 Claim. (Cl. 116-124) This invention relates to improvements in crane boom indicators, and more particularly to a novel multiple indicator for crane booms.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which will simultaneously indicate the maximum allowable load in tons at all boom angles, the operating radius in feet of the boom at all angles, and the height of the boom in feet at all boom angles.
Another object of the invention is to provide an indicator within the operators cab mounted and operable horizontally immediately in front of him in a convenient reading position.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front view in elevation and partly in section of an indicator dial and operating means embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the indicator mechanism taken on line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view of the crane cab showing the novel cable mounting.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the crane cab showing the position of the indicator dial and the indicator cable mounting.
FIG. 5 is a detail view similar to FIG. 3.
FIG. 6 is a view taken on line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is a front view in elevation of a modified form of indicator and dial assembly.
FIG. 8 is a view taken on line 8-8 of FIG. 7.
FIG. 9 is a broken plan view of the boom length numeral indicating element.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 refers to the operators cab of a crane 11, with a plane dial 12 disposed just beneath the front window 13 in convenient position for reference by the operator. The dial 12 has at the top a row of figures relating to the boom angle in degrees. Immediately thereunder is a series of numerals indicating the radius to load in degrees. Thereunder, also horizontally disposed is a series of figures indicating the boom height. The bottom row of figures indicates the maximum load in tons. At the extreme right of the dial chart is the notation 70 foot boom" which is the boom length to which the figures on the dial are correlated.
3,132,627. Patented May 12, 1964 A pointer 14 is affixed to block 15 which travels freely longitudinally in the channel 16. The block 15 is engaged with a cord 17 which runs over the pulley 18 to a terminal at 19 of casing 20, over a second pulley 21 held by link 22 in engagement with a coil spring 23. The opposite end of the block 15 is coupled with a cord 24 which runs over pulley 25 thence downwardly and around pulley 26 and upwardly and in an are over a series of pulleys 27 rotatably fixed on the quadrant 28 to its terminal on the bracket 29 on boom 30.
In FIG. 7 a modified form of dial assembly 40 is illustrated in which an elongated chart graduated to relate to a plurality of boom lengths is kept wound by the ends on the spools or spindles 42 and 43. An aperture at 44 of the casing 45 exposes a numeral relating to the boom length to which the figures exposed at the time on the dial pertain.
In use, the operator may adjust the pointers 31 and 32 to the positions of load and discharge, so as to facilitate rapid and safe handling of the work.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States Patent Oflice, is:
A multiple indicator for a crane boom, an elongated tape, a pair of spindles on which said tape is wound, four columns of figures each horizontally aligned on said tape, said tape divided into figure patterns for special separate lengths of booms, manual means for moving said tape appropriate to the length of boom employed, an indicator movable over said tape, cord means connecting said indicator with the boom and with a spring for return movement thereof, and a pair of settable indicators to mark loading and discharge angles of the boom.
