JOHN H. LAVVBENOE, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
STAY-ROLLER FOR SLIDING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,085, dated Ii /larch 3, 1885. Application filed July 30, 1884. (ModeL) T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. LAWRENOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in StayRollers for Barn- Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconipanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification My invention has reference to certain improvements in stay-rollers for barn-doors; and it consists more especially of a novel attachment of the friction-roller, whereby the latter can be adjusted to suit doors of different thickness, and yet the pressure from the door he almost entirely resisted by the roller-plate, instead of wholly by the thread of a screwbolt.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an oblique side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in detail of the parts involved therein.
A is a plate, having its outer portion, A, horizontal and inner portion, A vertical.
The innerportion, A is furnished with screwholes and adapted to be fastened to the outside of the building, and in such relation to the door that when the door is moved aside the lower edge thereof will pass over the horizontal portion A, and between the building and the friction-roller B, and be held by such roller from being swung or blown outward, and thus wrenched from its hinges or upper bearings.
C is an adjustable arm seated on the upper surface of the horizontal portion A of the plate A, parallel with such plate, and pro vidcd with the upward-extending post D, which latter is fitted at its upper end to form The arm (3 is pivotally seated on the plate A by means of a stud, E, formed on thelower face of such arm, near its inner end, which stud is inserted in a corresponding hole, F, in such plate.
Near the edge of the latter the space between the roller 13 and the side of the building is changed to suit the varying thickness of different doors, or that of the same door, in case of shrinkage or wear, by means of the following provision: Acurved or G, is formed in the plate A a short distance from and in such relation to the hole F as that the latter would be the center of a circle completed on the curvature of such slot, and such slot extends equal distances in opposite directions from a line drawn laterally through the center of such hole. The post D is hollow and is located directly over the slot G. A threaded bolt, H, provided with anut, H, is passed upward through the slot G, post D, and center ofthe roller B, and as the head ofthe bolt H overlaps the walls of the slot G, by means of the nut H the axle of the roller 13 shifted to and be held in any pointin the slot G, and thereby caused to approach or recede from the side of the building, as the thickness of the door or the proper action of such rollermay require. A shoulder, a, is formed on the-post D, which forms the bearing for the inwardly-extending hubb of the roller B. The outer end of the post D extends through the roller B and forms aseat for the nut H, where by the tightening of such nut does not affect the action of such roller.
It is obvious that the degree of adjustability of which the roller B is capable is twice the distance between the hole F and slot G.
The advantage I claim in my mode of ad justing the roller B is that in every position of the latter it is sustained in a greater orless walls of the slot G. This is important, as it is impracticable to hold the roller 13 against the jar of the door by the more clamping effect of the nut H without making the parts of otherwise unnecessary size.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the plate A, provided with the hole F and curved slot G, arm G, having the stud E and hollow post D, the roller B, and bolt H, provided with the nut H, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. LAWRENCE.
