United States Patent 3,130,416 SPORTSMENS GARMENT Jack L. Mitchell and Willie L. Mitchell, Athens, Ga. (both of R0. Box 37, Hull, Ga.) Filed June 6, 1961, Ser. No. 115,162 3 Claims. (Cl. 2-79) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garments, and in particular the invention concerns itself with an outer garment which is especially adapted to be worn by sportsmen, hunters, hikers, campers and others participating in outdoor sports activities, or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a sportsmens or hunters garment which is not only structurally arranged to protect the wearer against the effects of various kinds of weather, but which is also adapted to accommodate various types of sporting or hunting equipment together with whatever game may be caught.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, efficient and dependable use, in its versatility, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a sportsmens garment in accordance with the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevational View thereof;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view, showing the garment with short sleeves and flaps of the game pouch open;
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the adjusting means of the leg members;
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the garment with the game pouch partially broken away to reveal the belt thereunder;
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary front elevational view with the front of the garment open;
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary elevational View, partly in section, showing the sleeve arrangement;
FIGURE 8 is a sectional detail on an enlarged scale, taken substantially in the plane of the line 88 in FIG- URE 2;
FIGURE 9 is an enlarged sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 99 in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 10 is an enlarged sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line Iii-1i in FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 11 is a fragmentary side elevational view shown with the detachable helmet of the garment.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the sportsmens or hunters garment in accordance with the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 14 and is in the form of a coverall such as may be worn either over conventional outer clothing or directly over underclothing, as desired. The garment or coverall 14 is fabricated in its entirety from suitable waterproof material wd includes an upper or jacket portion 16 having a collar 18 and an openable front equipped with a slide fastener closure 20 to facilitate donning and removal of the entire garment. The jacket portion 16 is also provided with a pair of short sleeves 22 and with a pair of detachable sleeve extensions 24 which are separably connected to the sleeves 22 by slide fastener means 26, as is clearly shown in FIGURE 3, so that the garment may be worn either with short sleeves or long sleeves, as desired.
A cushioning pad 28 is provided on the jacket portion 16 at one shoulder thereof to absorb recoil of a gun fired while being held against the shoulder, and strips of material are attached to the front of the jacket portion 16 as indicated at 30 to form holders for ammunition.
The jacket portion 16 of the coverall is formed integrally with a pair of leg members 32 of a lower or trouser portion 34, the latter being equipped with reinforcing seat pad means 36 and knee pad means 38, as will be clearly apparent. The lower end portions of the leg members 32 are equipped with adjusting straps 40 which permit the lower ends of the leg members to be either loose as shown in FIGURE 1, or restricted as shown in FIGURE 4 to prevent wind or moisture from gaining access into the leg members. The waist of the coverall is provided with a suitable belt 42 which is stitched to the coverall at the back but is separably connected together at the front by a buckle 44. The belt 42 effectively supports the lower or trouser portion 34 of the coverall on the wearers body and thereby relieves the weight of the trouser portion from being sustained by the shoulders. The belt 42 may be provided with a suitable ring attachment for suspension of a canteen or attachment of a dog leash, the ring attachment being indicated at 46.
The coverall is equipped with a pair of pockets 48 on the front of the jacket portion 16, and front and rear pairs of pockets 5%, 52, respectively, on the trouser portion 34. The entrances of these pockets are protected against weather by overlapping shields 54 which, as shown in FIGURE 10, are secured to the coverall so that they cover the pocket entrance but permit access into the pocket by insertion of a hand under the shield.
The back of the jacket portion 16 is provided with suitable pleats 56, while the sides of the trouser portion 34 are formed with openings 58 through which access may be gained to pockets of clothing such as may be worn under the coverall.
A pouch or bag 60 for carrying game, et cetera, is provided at the back of the jacket portion 16, the same being constituted by a sheet or panel of material having upper and lower edges stitched to the jacket portion as indicated at 62, 64 and having sufiicient fullness to hang below the line of stitching 64, as is shown in FIGURE 8. The pouch 6t) overlies the rear portion of the belt 42 and is provided at opposite sides thereof with a pair of openable flaps 66 to close side entrances to the pouch when the flaps 66 are secured to the front portions of the belt 42 by separable fasteners 68, as is best shown in FIGURE 3.
The garment is also provided with a detachable helmet 70 which is separably attached to the collar 18 of the jacket portion 16 by a slide fastener 72 as shown in FIG URE 11, and when the helmet is not being used, it may be conveniently stored in the pouch 60.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation as shown and described, and accordingly, various modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a sportsmens garment, a jacket portion having a front and back, a belt positionable about the waist of a wearer, said belt having an adjustable and disconnectable front portion at the front of the jacket portion, a pouch mounted on the back of the jacket portion overlying the rear portion of said belt, flaps provided at the sides of said pouch in the same general plane as the belt, said flaps extending around the waist of the wearer to the 3 front of the jacket portion, and means attaching said flaps to the front portion of said belt, said pouch having at least one open side, one of said flaps constituting a closure for said open side of the pouch.
2. The garment of claim 1 wherein said pouch is formed from a single flexible sheet'having the lower edge secured to the waist portion of the jacket portion, said sheet extending from this lower edge, downwardly below the waist, outwardly and then upwardly to a line below the shoulders of the jacket portion, the upper edge of the sheet being secured to the jacket portion at this line, said flaps consisting of lateral extensions on each side of said sheet.
3. The garment of claim 2 including a lower trouser portion integral with said jacket portion, said belt having its rear portion secured to the rear waist portion of the jacket portion.
