Filed Mar. 15, 1961, Ser. No. 95,906 2 Claims. (Ci. 24-73) This invention relates to a new and useful fastener, and more particularly to one which is :adapted for facile closing and opening of a suit or sport jacket.

In many occupations it is necessary for a man to wear a jacket, either a suit or a sport jacket, in a business oice r similar establishment, 'and it is necessary for the individual to be seated during a portion of the normal working time. In addition to being seated, the individual must rise at frequent intervals, either to greet people or to conduct business at another location. The construction of present-day jackets is such, that in many instances, it is more comfortable to unbutton the jacket while the wearer is seated to eliminate tightness or binding. In order to present a proper and pleasing appearance, it is necessary for the wearer to rebutton his jacket when he arises from a seated position. It is, of course, obvious that the buttoning and unbuttoning of the jacket produces undue wear on the used buttonhole, thereby presenting a frayed appearance of the jacket long before the useful life of the jacket has been expended.

Another problem with the buttoning and unbuttoning operation is that it is a cumbersome operation which requires two hands to do. Furthermore, the appearance of a man rising from a seated position and fumbling with a button is not appealing. It is appreciated that there are many devices which allow facile closing of two edges, but all of these devices require that a certain different type of fixing member be built into a jacket, that is, other than the conventional and widely accepted button and buttonhole mounted on respective opposite sides of a jacket. It is therefore one of the principal objects of the hereindisclosed invention to provide a coat fastener for holding opposite edges of a coat together, which device holds opposite edges of a jacket in a juxtaposition with a minimum of manipulation of the device by the wearer of the jacket to fasten the two edges together.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a fastener which is readily mountable in a conventional buttonhole in a jacket and easily attached to a conventional button to hold the jacket closed.

It is a further object of the instant invention to provide a fastener which provides adequate space for mounting a family crest, fraternity crest, society emblem, or similar device on the fastener to provide an attractive accessory for a mans jacket.

It is a still further object of this invention to provide a fastener for use with a suit or a sport jacket which fastener may be used by a wearer during a certain portion of the day and then readily removed from the jacket to allow the jacket to be fastened closed in a conventional manner, that is, by a conventional button in a buttonhole.

Other objects and uses of the hereindisclosed invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon a perusal of the appended specification in light of the drawings in which:

3,127,651 Patented Apr. 7, 1964 Referring now to FIGURES 1 through 4, which show a form of the instant invention, a jacket 205) is shown, which jacket has an edge 202 with a button 204 held thereon by thread 206, and another edge 208 with a bound buttonhole 210 contained therein. A fastener 212 which is a specific embodiment of the subject invention, is shown holding the two edges 202 and 208 juxtapositioned each other. The fastener 212 includes a substantially flat,- oval base 214. The base 214 has an ornamental face 216 on one side. The ornamental face has suitable ornamentation contained thereon, which may be :a crest, fraternal order symbol, or other such similar device mounted thereon. The base has a spacer 213 fixed to a portion of the edge of said base and extending away from the ornamental face, as may be clearly seen in FIGURE 2. A button catch 226 is fixed to the spacer on the side of the base opposite the ornamental face. The button catch includes a pair of arms 222 and 224 which define a V- shaped recess 226 therebetween to act as a fixing member. On the same side of the base as the spacer and button catch, there is fixed to the base a buttonhole riser 228 which also serves as a spreader bar, as do buttonhole risers 36 and 112. The buttonhole riser is mountable in the buttonhole 210 and the buttonhole riser has a substantially square button 230 fixed thereon an-d spaced away from the base.

The fastener 212 is mounted on the jacket 200 by placing the button 230 through the buttonhole 210 so that the buttonhole riser 223 is held in the buttonhole 210 and the material of the edge 208 is positioned between the button 230 and the inside surface of the base 214. The fastener is so positioned that the catch 220 extends out beyond the edge 208 for reasons which will become apparent hereinafter.

With the fastener mounted in the position described above, the ornamental face 216 is presented for viewing. In order to fasten the jacket closed, the wearer need only pull the fastener with the edge 208 toward the edge 202 so that the catch 226 is placed beyond the button 204. The fastener is then released and the arms 222 and 224 guide the thread 206 into the bottom of the recess 226. Thereby the button is securely held between the base and the button catch and the jacket is held closed. When the wearer Wishes to unfasten the jacket, it is necessary only to pull the edge 208 toward the edge 202 until the button is clear of the catch and then raise the fastener away from the button to release edge 202.

It is evident that when the wearer determines that it is desirable to remove the fastener from the jacket, it is necessary only to push the button 230 through the buttonhole 210 remove the fastener from the jacket. Thereby the fastener may be :applied to another jacket or another fastener may be used in buttonhole 210 or the jacket may be closed in a conventional fashion, that is, by the use of button 294, which is a fixing member, and buttonhole 210.

Although the foregoing description gives specific embodiments of the hereindisclosed invention, it is readily apparent that those skilled in the art may make various modififications and changes in the hereindisclosed invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is to be expressly understood that the present invention is in no way limited by the description contained herein but is limited only by the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A fastener of the type described forl holding opposite edges of a jacket together comprising, a fastener button, a riser fixed to said fastener button for mounting in a buttonhole in an edge of a jacket, a base fixed to said riser, said base having an ornamental surface, a spacer fixed to a portion of the outer periphery of said base and extending away from the base in the same direction as the buttonhole riser, and a button catch fixed to said spacer for cooperation with a button fixed to a second edge of the jacket, said button catch including a pair of arms with a generally V-shaped opening therebetween for receiving thread holding the button onto the second edge of the jacket.

2. A fastener for holding opposite edges of a jacket together comprising a substantially at base, a spacer substantially perpendicular to the base and being formed on a portion of the outer periphery thereof, a button catch xed to the spacer and spaced from said base, a buttonhole riser fixed to the base on the same side as the button catch, and a fastener button fixed to said buttonhole riser and being substantially parallel to the base, whereby said fastener button is placed through a buttonhole in an edge of a jacket to place the buttonhole riser within the buttonhole, thereby mounting the fastener on the edge of the coat, and the button catch is placed into engagement with threads holding a button on a second edge of the jacket to position the button between the button catch and the base thereby holding the two edges of the jacket together.

A FASTENER FOR HOLDING OPPOSITE EDGES OF A JACKET TOGETHER COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY FLAT BASE, A SPACER SUBSTANTIALLY PERPENDICULAR TO THE BASE AND BEING FORMED ON A PORTION OF THE OUTER PERIPHERY THEREOF, A BUTTON CATCH FIXED TO THE SPACER AND SPACED FROM SAID BASE, A BUTTONHOLE RISER FIXED TO THE BASE ON THE SAME SIDE AS THE BUTTON CATCH. AND A FASTENER BUTTON FIXED TO SAID BUTTONHOLE RISER AND BEING SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL TO THE BASE, WHEREBY SAID FASTENER BUTTON IS PLACED THROUGH A BUTTONHOLE IN AN EDGE OF A JACKET TO PLACE THE BUTTONHOLE RISER WITHIN THE BUTTONHOLE, THEREBY MOUNTING THE FASTENER ON THE EDGE OF THE COAT, AND THE BUTTON CATCH IS PLACED INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH THREADS HOLDING A BUTTON ON A SECOND EDGE OF THE JACKET TO POSITION THE BUTTON BETWEEN THE BUTTON CATCH AND THE BASE THEREBY HOLDING THE TWO EDGES OF THE JACKET TOGETHER.
