LOUELLA JOHNSTON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
COMBINED TOILET-CASE AND SATCHEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,355, dated February 17, 1885.
Application filed December 36, 18:4. (No model.)
$0 a ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUELLA JOHNSTON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Columwhiclnwhile answering as a small hand satchel or reticule for containing comb, brush, and small parcels, serves also for supporting and concealing a toilet or looking glass, box for containing face or cooling powder, perfnmery, glycerine, or other cosmetics, either of which articles can be reached or brought into use by simply unfastening an ornamental rosetteshaped flap or cover and turning the same down on its lower connection with the material forming the main pocket of the satchel or reticule.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved combined toiletcase and satchel as it appears when its side flaps are closed, Fig. 2, a similar view with one of the side flaps unfastened and turned down to expose the cosmetics. In this view one of the bottles is shown partly out of its pocket. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the flap which covers the toilet or looking glass unfastened and turned down, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section in the line was of Fig. 1.
The toilet-case comprises as a foundation an inside lining, A, of leather, which forms a main pocket, a, of a satchel, and on the two inner sides of this pocket small receptacles b and c are formed, one serving for a comb and the other for a brush; or the pocket to and receptacles b and 0 may be used for any small articles required by ladies while traveling. The portion A is constructed in all respects similar to an ordinary handsatchel with entrance or mouth and fastening ot' the usual kind. This lining is covered with cloth, velvet, or other flexible finishing material, 13, wrought into the form or design represented, or in any other suitable form and design. N ear the center of each side of this outside finishing material a circular or other shaped opening is made, and back of each of these openings a stiff pasteboard, leather, or other stiff support, as d or d, is applied, and the cloth or velvet securely glued, sewed, or otherwise suitably fastened to the same. Near the edge of the pasteboard d a circular bead, of indiarubber or other flexible substance, as f, covered with plush, cloth, or velvet, is placed and securely confined. This bead, with the pasteboard (1, forms a circular or oval frame for a toilet-glass, g, and bypressing aside the head with the fingers the glass 9 can be placed against the pasteboard, and when so placed, and the bead is allowed to assume its normal condition, it will be held securely in position. If the glass should be accidentally broken, it can be removed by pressing aside the bead and another readily introduced in its place. Over this looking-glass an ornamental rosette or cover, h, is applied, it being secured near its lowest part by rivets, thread, or otherwise to the finishing material of the combined toiletcase and satchel, and provided with a fasteningloop, p, at its highest portion, as shown. By detaching the fasteningloop from its button p the rosette can be turned so as to expose the toilet orlooking glass for use, as illustrated in Fig. 3. lVhen the rosetteis fastened by its loop and button, the glass is completely concealed. In using the glass the owner of the toilet-case and satchel can place the toiletcase and satchel with the rosette lowered in front of her face, and no person will know that the glass is being utilized, and this will be a satisfaction to sensitive ladies, who desireprivately to examine their appearance while at opera, theater, or traveling in cars or other vehicles, or under other circumstances. On the other side of thefinishing covering, and on the pasteboard support d, small pockets on a are provided for the reception of perfumery and glycerine bottles, as shown, and between these pockets a box, a, for face-powder is se cured by glue or in any other suitable manner,
view the pockets, bottles, and powder-box,
I were all and by lowering the rosette, as illustratedin Fig. 2, access is secured to either of the desired cosmetics.
My combined toilet-case and satchel can be made very ornamental, and it Will be found a very useful, convenient, and desirable article for ladieswho are necessarily exposed in traveling to the gaze of all about them While1naking their toilet or using the lookingglass while applying cosmetics.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved article of n1anufacture viz.,acombinedtoilet-caseandsatchelcomprising suitable inside pockets, outside receptacle or frame for a toilet or looking glass on astiff support, the outer flexible finishing material, and a flap-cover forthe said glass, substantially as described.
2. The improved article of manufactureviz., a combined toilet-case and satchel comprising suitable inside pockets, outside receptacles for cosmetics on a stiff support fastened to the outer finishing material, and a flap cover for the said receptacles, substantially as dcscribed.
