SAMUEL FRIEND, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
SPLINT FOR BASKETS, &.c.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,197, dated February 10, 1885.
(N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAuUEL FRIEND, a resident of the city of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splints for for baskets, 850., constructedand arranged as.
hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 represents a U-shaped splint which forms the basis of my compound Xshaped splint, shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows a manner ofinterlacing my splints preparatory to constructing articles of various utilities. Fig. 4 shows a disposition of a pair of'my compound splints, preparatory to forming therewith the fruitbasket shown in Fig. 5.
In Figure 1, a indicates an end of a U- shaped splint. a indicates the opposing end of the same splint, and 0 shows the fold at the angle thereof.
In Fig. 2, a a represent the ends of one U- shaped splint, and b b the ends of another U- shaped splint, the said U-shaped splints being interlocked, as shown, to form the X- shaped splint, which is the subject of my invention.
In Fig. 3, a fabric formed of interlaced coinpouhd splints is shown. a a represent the ends of U-shaped splints, and b b represent ends of other interlocking Ushaped splints,
the two forming the compound splint shown in Fig. 2. By interlacing the ends of a number of these compound splints, which arelaid side by side, the fabric shown in Fig. 3 is formed.
In Fig. 4, a pair of X-shaped splints, a a b b, are laid diagonally one across the other, and in Fig. the ends of the splints shown in Fig. 4 are bent upward and inward to form a fruit-basket or other similar receptacle. In Fig. 5 the splints are represented as secured in position by a circular band; but such band forms no part of my invention and can be varied in form and arrangement to suit various requirements.
Sheets of interlaced splints similar in construction to that shown in Fig. 3 may be used for forming barrels, baskets, and other receptacles by the use of any known forming and securing devices, and may be also used for fences when properly supported.
Barrels constructed of sheets, as shown in Fig. 3, will have great utility as fruit or vegetable receptacles, owing to their superior ven tilation and the facilities they afford purchasers of determining the quality of their entire contents.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The compound Xshaped splint for the manufacture of baskets, &c., herein set forth, consisting ina pair of interlocking U-shaped splints, all the flat surfaces of which are on substantially the same plane.
SAMUEL FRIEND.
