Description

Jan. 21, 1964 CALLAHAN 3,118,668
BARBELL EXERCISING DEVICE Filed Jan. 25, 1961 IN V EN TOR.
United States Patent ice 3,118,668 BARBELL EXERCHSING DEVIQE Geor e Callahan, 271 Bridle Path, Mountainside, NJ. Filed Jan. 25, 1961, Ser. No. 84,795 1 Claim. (Cl. 272-84) This invention relates to a barbell exercising device.
It is known that accidents have occurred in exercising with barbells, due to the fact that the exerciser is unable to control the barbell while it is in certain positions. The present device has been devised to avoid such accidents with resulting injuries. A former device proposed to overcome the mentioned problem required that the barbell be attached to supporting standards in a selected and fixed position, and that the barbell and the standards be lifted together by the exerciser. This proposed solution, however, is not desirable for several reasons. The present device is simple, and allows barbell push-ups to be performed with safety.
The drawings illustrate one form of the invention, and in these:
FIGURES 1, 2, 3 and 4 are, respectively, side, front, back, and perspective views of the device. Referring to the drawings for a detailed description, the device comprises a pair of similar, spaced, parallel standards 5. Each standard comprises a pair of components 6 which are convergent toward their upper ends. At their upper ends, the components 6 of each standard are connected by a depressed member 7, shown as inclined toward its center, to form a support for a barbell 8, as indicated in dash lines in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3. At the back of the device the standards are connected by a cross bar 9, and are connected at their lower ends by bars 10. The lower ends of the components 16 are provided with suction cups 12 to anchor the device in a desired place.
3,.ll8fi53 Patented Jan. 21, 1954 Vertical supporting props 15', one for each standard, are provided, and these extend from one of the connecting cross bars 10 up to the middle of the depressed members 7. Barbell rests 16, arranged in pairs, are provided on the props 15.
It will be understood that the person exercising stands within the device and pushes up the barbell from its supported position at the top of the device, and that the depressed and inclined members 7 prevent the barbell from falling on the exerciser or onto the floor.
What is claimed is:
A barbell exercising device comprising a pair of similar lateral, parallel, opposed standards, each standard comprising a pair of components convergent upwardly, a trough-formed bar connecting the two components at their upper extremities, the two trough-formed bars of the device adapted to support a barbell, horizontal bars connecting each pair of said components at their lower ends, a single vertical prop rising from the mid-point of each of said horizontal bars up to and centrally supporting said trough-formed bars, a cross support at the back of the device connecting said standards, said device being open at the front for the unobstructed entry and exit of the exerciser into and out of the device.
