CARBON BATTERY-ELEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,852, dated February 3, 1885.

To all whpm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAIAH L. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and
5 State of New York, have made a new and useful invention in Carbon Battery Elements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, when taken in connection with theacco mpanying drawings, will enable others to practice my invention.
My invention consists in a cheap and easy means of attaching metallic conductors to can bon battery-elements, and of making better 1 contact than any other known means.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view part-lyin section. Fig. 2 is a top View of the carbon battery-element, taken on the line a: r, Fig. 1, and constructed in accordance with my invention.

At A is shown the carbon, and at B is shown a binding-post having a shank, 0, preferably 2 5 formed with a screw-thread or other projecting part upon it. C shows, preferably, typemetal which is cast around the shank dot the binding-post and within a hole in the carbon A. The metal. or alloy 0 must be such as will expand on cooling, as does type-metal, antimony, or bismuth, which must be used in its composition.
In making my carbon element I first bore a hole in the carbon; I then hold within the hole the shank of the binding-post or other metallic conductor, and I then pour into the hole the melted metal or alloy, which when cooling expands and forces itself firmly against the walls of the carbon. In this way a very tight and lasting form of attachment is made, +0 and one which costs but comparatively little. After the conductor is attached to the carbon the entire upper portion thereof may be soaked in hot parafline for the purpose of protecting the metal 0 from the effect of acids or the air,
which find their way through the carbon.
\Vhat I claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a carbon for a battery-element, a metallic conductor, and a conductive metal or metallic alloy applied in a molten state and being of such character that it will expand in cooling and secure the said conductor to the carbon, substantially as specified.
