Description

(No Modelf') B. D. PALMER.
STRAP HINGE.
No. 311,518. Patented'eb. 3,1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrFICEo BARTLETT D. PALMER, OF WHAT CHEER, IOWVA.
STRAP- HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N'o. 311,518, ated February 3, 1885.
Application filed July 14, 1884. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTLETT D. PALMER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at What Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specifieation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to hiuges; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character whercby, when the object to which it is applied is closed, a smooth joint will he presented, and no part of the hinge will project beyond the edges of the object.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, durable in its use, and one that may be readily applied.
The invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved hinge applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the hinge closed, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hinge detached.
In the accompanyingdrawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in allthe figures,A represents two strips or blocks of wood, to which my improved hinge is shown applied. B and B' represent my improved hinge, the straps of which are connected in any suitable or well-known manner. One of the straps, B, of this hinge is rigidly secured to one of the blocks A by means of screws or other suitable fastening. The other strap, B', is provided at or about its center with lugs a, which project outwardly from each side thereof. The strap B' is mounted, held in position, and is adapted to slide between a plate, O, and the block A. This plate C is reeessed or cut away on its under side to receive the strap of the hinge, and is seen red to the block A by screws, as shown. There are slots or openings D formed on the sides of the plate O, in which slide the lugs a of the strap B', the movement in either a forward or rearward direction being limited by the ends of said slots.
In operation the hinge is connected in the following manner: The strap B is secured to one of the blocks, and the strap B' connected therewith upon the same block. The other end of the strap slides and is held in place by means of the plate C. When the hinge is closed, the lugs a of the strap B' are at the rear end of the slots, and when the hinge is opened the corners or edges of the object to which it is attached bear against each other, and thus force or draw the strap B' to the forward end of the slots and allow the hinge to be opened to its full extent.
Ordinarily in the use of strap-hinges the straps are secured together at a point beyond the object to which it is attached; but by the use of my improved hinge the necessity of this manner of securing is obviated, and a smooth surface afforded at the back wall or edgeslof the object to which the hinge is applied. Moreover, my iinproved hinge is simple, may be manufactured and supplied at a iceable device for the purpose intended.
In order to point out more clearly the advantages and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not seek to claim anything shown in the patent-s of IV. Seng, No. 147,869, dated February 24, 1874, and J. G. Ralph, No. 67,90i, dated August 20, 1867; but, 4
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hinge, the combination of two straps, B B', the strap B' having outwardly-extending lugs a, and a plate, O, secured over said strap B', and having slots, as shown, to receive the. lugs a, said strap B' being allowed movement the length of the slots, while the strap B is rigidly secured, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as in presence of two witnesses.
BARTLETT D. PALMER.
