To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL PoLsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Vermillion, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in End-Grates for VVagons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in end gates for wagons and has particular application to an end gate which may be used as a scoop board when desired.

In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide an end gate for wagons which may be readily and quickly applied to the wagon box and removed therefrom, and which may be swung downwardly from the bottom of the wagon box and held in position to form a scoop board to facilitate the removal of the contents of the wagon box.

It is also my purpose to improve and sim plify the general construction of wagon end gates and to provide an end gate wherein the component parts will be so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum and which may be securely fastened in position.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a wagon box of any suitable construction. Secured to the inner faces of the side boards of the box 1 at the rear end thereof are pairs of vertical guide strips 2 respectively, the strips of each pair being spaced apart to form a guideway.

normally projecting at right angles to the end gate and having the outer surfaces formed with vertical ribs 5 respectively designed to engage in the ways between the strips 2 when the strips 4 are at right angles to the end gate so as to hold the end gate in position at the rear end of the wagon box. These strips 4 are capable of inward swinging movement onto the rear face of the end gate and when swung inwardly the ribs 5 are moved out of the guideways between the guide strips 2 to release the end gate so that the latter may be removed from the wagon box. In the present instance, the

respective extremities of the end gate 3 are formed with slots 6 and working within the slots 6 are levers 7, each having one end fastened to the proximate edge of the adjacent strip 4 and the outer end portion disposed beyond the end gate. These levers 7, when swung outwardly from the end gate, actuate the strips 4 inwardly onto the inner surface of the end gate to release the latter, while when the levers are swung toward the outer surface of the end gate, the strips 4 are swung outwardly to engage the ribs 5 in the ways between the guide strips 2.

8, 8 indicate holding devices of some suitable construction carried by the outer surface of the end gate and disposed in the path of movement of the outer ends of the levers 7 respectively to receive the outer ends of the levers when the latter are swung inwardly and these holding devices serve to maintain the levers against accidental movement to release the end gate.

' 9, 9 indicate hinges, each having one part rigidly fastened to the edge of the end gate '3 adjacent to one end thereof and the other part detachably mounted upon the rear end of the bottom of thewagon box. The lower corners of the end gate 3 in juxtaposition to the respective hinges are cut out as at 10, 10 and mounted in these out out portions are bearings 11, 11 respectively. Rotatably mounted in each bearing 11 is a rod 12 having one end formed to provide a lug 13 adapted to engage in the lower end of the adjacent way formed by the strips 2. and

the outer end formed to provide a handle 14. When the rods 12 are swung in one direction under the action of the handles 14, the lugs 13 engage in the lower ends of the ways formed by the strips 2 below the ribs 5 and so hold the bottom parts of the hinges to the bottom of the wagon box so that the end gate may be swung outwardly and downwardly when relieved of the influence of the ribs 5 on the strips t. On the other hand, when the rods are swung in the opposite direction under the action of the handles, the

lugs 13 are moved out of the respective one end of a reinforcing strap 16, such strap having the remaining end thereof bent at right angles to itself as at 17. The outer bent ends 17 of the straps 16 are adapted to be drawn into engagement with the outer surfaces of the side boards of the wagon when the levers 7 are swung inwardly toward the outer surface of the end gate and these straps serve to brace the side boards of the wagon at the rear ends thereof.

Pivoted to the inner surface of each strip 1 adjacent to the upper end thereof is a guard 18 and the lower end of the guard 18 is connected through the medium of a link 19 with the adjacent bearing 11 so that in the downward swinging movement of the end gate to form a scoop board, each guard 18 will be swung upwardly from the end gate to form the sides of the scoop board. and so prevent waste of material. Should it be desired to increase the depth of the wagon box. an additional front end section 20 and additional side board sections 21 may be p aced upon the upper edges of the front end board and the side boards respectively of the wag n box, and an additional end gate 22 p aced upon the end gate 3. The end g te 22 is substantiallv ide tical in construction t the end gate 3, while the inner surfaces of the side board sections 21. at the rear end of such sections. are equipped with pairs of guid strips 23 corresponding to the strips 2. The, lower edge of the end gate 22 is pre erably beveled and the u per ed e of the end gate 3 is correspondinglv beveled so as to fo m a tight joint between the end gates. Sec ed to the outer surface of the end gate 3 adjacent to the upper edge the eof and suitablv spaced apart are c eats 24, while pi oted to the outer surface of the end gate 22 adiacent to the lower edge thereof are arms 25 adapted to be swung into the cleats 21 respectively to lock the end gates together so that the same may be removed bodily simultaneously, or swung downwardly to scoop board formation together. The inner and outer surfaces of the front end section 20 and the side board sections 21 are provided with suitable depending bars 26 that engage the corresponding faces of the front end board and the side boards of the wagon boX.

lVhile I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claimswithout departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. In end gate construction, the combination with the side boards of a wagon body, of pairs of strips secured to the inner surfaces of said side boards respectively adja- '3 cent to the rear ends thereof, the strips of each pair being spaced apart to form' guide ways, end gate securing strips pivoted to the inner surface of said end gate adjacent;-

to the opposite ends thereof, ribs formed in said ways to hold the end gate against accidental displacement, levers connected with said strips respectively for swinging, the same to move said ribs into and out of 5 said ways, holding devices on the outer surfaceof said end gate adaptedto engage said levers to hold the latter against movement in one direction, and means carried by said levers and adapted to engage the side boards of the wagon to reinforce the latter.-

2. In end gate construction, the combination with the side boards of a wagon body, of pairs of strips secured to the inner surfaces of said side boards respectively adjacent to'the rear ends thereof, the strips of each pair being spaced apart to formguide ways, end gate securing strips pivoted to the inner surface of said end gate adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, ribs formed on said strips respectively and engageable in said ways to hold the end gate against accidental displacement, detachable connections between the lower edge of said end gate and the rear edgev of the bottom'of the wagon box, and means holding said connections against accidental disconnection from the wagon box. 7

3. In end gate construction, the combina-. tion'with the side boards of a wagon body, of pairs of strips secured to the inner surfaces of said side boards respectively adjacent to the rear ends thereof. the strips of each pair being spaced apart to form guide ways, end gate securing strips pivoted to 25 the inner surface of said end gate adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, ribs formed on said strips respectivelyand engageable in said ways to hold the end gate against ac-' cidental displacement, detachable .connec- 1 0 tions between the lower edge of said end gate and the rear edge of the bottom of the wagon box, whereby the end gate may be swung downwardly to form a scoop board, and guards carried bv the end gate adjacent to the respective sides thereof and projecting upwardly therefrom to form the side walls of the scoop board.

4. In end gate construction, the combination with the side boards of a wagon body, of pairs of strips secured to the inner surfaces of said side boards respectively adjacent to the rear ends thereof, the strips of each pair being spaced apart to form guide ways, end gate securing strips pivoted to the inner surface of said end gate adjacent to the opposite endsthereof, ribs formed on said strips respectively and engageable in said ways to hold the end gate against accidental Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

displacement, detachable connections between the lower edge of said end gate and the rear edge of the bottom of the wagon box, whereby the end gate may be swung downwardly to form a scoop board,- guards carried by the end gate adjacent to the re spective sides thereof and projecting upwardly therefrom to form the side walls of the scoop board, and means operable in the downward swinging movement of said end gate to move said guards into side wall formation.
