Be it known that I, F. LoUIs FIsoHER, of Pittsburg, in the county-of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Holders for Pens, Pencils, and Analogous Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of the holder and case. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, enlarged, of the case, holder, and clamping-ring. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same through the ring. Fig. 4 is an end view of the ring, and Fig. 5 is a view of the adjustable holding-tube with pen and pencil attachments.

This invention relates to holders for such instruments or tools as pens, pencils, penknives, bodkins, needles, 810.; and it consists in the arrangement and construction of devices substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed. My object is to provide a case or tube in which theimplement may be concealed by means of a sliding holder inside, and to combine with such inside holder a device whereby the holder may be locked in any position it is placed in.

In the bore of tube a, I place a tubular holder, d, or a cylindrical body with tubularends, the holder fitting the tube a so as to slide freely therein. To the holder d I attach a pin or projection, 0, so as to protrude through the slit 0 of tube a. While the pin 6 does not prevent the holder d from longitudinal movement in case or tube a, it prevents any rotation of the holder. I can therefore slide the holder 61 to any desired position in the case or tube a. In the construction of the case and holder I set a ring, f, having aninternal groove, g,

for the reception of the pin 6, so that by simply sliding the ring f I thereby effect a corresponding movement of the holder (1 inside the case a. The groove g is formed eccentric or cam-shaped-that is, for a part of its circumference it is made of less depth than at the other part-and'these positions of the groove are so proportioned to the length of the pen e that the ring f may be freely rotated on the case a at the deepest part of the groove 9; but a more extended rotation causes the head of pin 6 to strike the bottom of the groove g at its shallower part. This action of the eccentric bottom of the groove 9 causes the surface of the holder d opposite the pin to bind tightly against the interior of tube or case a, and the result is that when the ring f is so rotated, which may be done at any position of the holder (1 in tube a, the holder is locked against endwise movement, and a pencil, pen, or other device attached to the holder may be used without fear of its slipping backwardly into the case.

Various uses may be made of such a device. It may be used as a pen and pencil holder, in which case the inside holder, d, acts as recipient for a pencil, h, at one end, and a pensocket, z, and pen k at the other end. The pen-socket 13 may be tubular, and serve as sheath for a knife-blade, if desired. The pencil It may be a lead or slate pencil,

Besides the stated uses of my invention, the holder may be used to receive and hold such devices as button hooks, crochetneedles, tweezers, scratchawls, compasses, needleboXes, toilet-scissors,-small tools, 810., and in such event the tube a can serve as a case for receiving any two or more of them; or it may be made in different sizes and stylesas, for instance, a school-set for children, adapted to pen and pencil; or a ladys set with any two or more of the above-mentioned articles or others; or a carpenter s set, including scratchawl and compasses or dividers, or scratch'awl and pencil, &c.

I do not confine my invention to any particular use or set of uses,.nor do I limit it to any specific construction of clamp-ring, as I believe myself to be the first to have invented the combination of a case with sliding tool or I bination with the internal holder, d, having implement holder adapted to be locked in any pin 6, and ringf, having cam-groove 9, sub position therein. stantially as described.
