This invention is a new and improved eliair t'or eonneeting the ends ot rail-road rails` and t'or seeuring said rails at thejoints. in a rigid and permanent manner on the cross ties.

My invention eons'. s of two doable4 lapped halt Chairs united bya double-lapped joint, formed as will he hereina't'ter de scribed in eonibination with a transverse wedge whieh tort-es the lips ot' the rail base up against the jaws 'of the eliair. and at the same time rigidlyv binds together the two halves ot the ehair.y all as will be .hereinafter deseribed.

To enable those skilled in the art to malte and use my invention, I will proceed to de4 scribe its eonstruetion and operation.

My invention is t'ully illustrated in the aeeoinpanying drawings. in whit-li A. are t'wo oblong reetangular portions whieh torni ,the bed pieees of the eli-air.` l, l. are eurved jaws projet-ting' up from the top ol bed piece A. and l. l', are similar jaws whieh project up troni the top surtare ot bed piece A. These four jaws are all ot the `same shape and their inner surfaces are formed so as to correspond with the upper sm'taees of the lower lips of the rail-road rail and to tit snugly against the neel( or web ot the rail, as represented in Figs. and l ot the drawings` wherein the jaws of the ehair are shown grasping the base portion ot the rail (l.

These lips prevent the chain tat its joint) from being moved out ot its place laterally. when it is properly spiked down on the eross tie. and at the sante time they torni a solid bed or base for a edge which is used to loel all the parts together in Securing the rail ends to the'ehair.

The portions G. G. which projeet` out` longitudinallyv from the outside ends ot the base pieees A'. and whose upper surt'aees are in the plane ot the rail seats. torni bridges 'for giving additional support to the rail base beyond the ends ot the base, pieees of the chair.

The ends otl the rail seettions C. meet in the eenter ot' the spaee between the jaws B. B. and B', Il. as shown in Fig. l, where the)Y are seeured b v a transverse wedge J. shown in Figs. l. and 9. whieh is driven into the spaee between the inelined surtaee of the projeeting portions r1. o, of the base pieees A\. and the horizontal plane surface ot the rail base. This wedge J when driven hard into this spaee presses both ends ot the rail up against the jaws oit' the ehair and at lille saine time draws the horizontal surfaces of the lips 6. b', IF. 7f3, together and locks the ends of the rails down rigidly to the chair; and the Wedge, when in this position, forms a rwat for the ends of the rails at the joint.

Foul' liolddo\\'n spikca are used with this compound chair,y two to each Section, to secure the chair to the cross tie, and when thus secured the ends of the rails will be prevented from moving' either laterally or vertieally.
