Description

April 6 ,1926Q H. B. UNRUH TRACK RAIL Filed Nov. 1925 n Ylllillll fifliyfi. 5727713) INVENTOR.
. A TTORNE Y.
Patented Apr. 6, 1926,
UNITED s'rirrnsv HENRY IB. UNR UH, OF GREAT BEND, KANSAS.'
TRACK RAIL.
Application filed November 24, 1925. Serial No. 71,157.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. UNRUH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Bend, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Track Rails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to track rails for railroads, more particularly to the ends of a track rail section whereby the ends of adjacent track rail sections may be interlocked to form a substantially unbroken continu ous track rail, and more particularly to an improvement upon the construction of track rail sections as set forth in Letters Patent granted to me April 14, 1908, No. 884,690, and not only possessing the objects and advantages as defined in the aforesaid'Letters Patent, but further has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, the sections of a track rail with means to prevent the interlocking ends of said sections from vertical and longitudinal play thereof, at the same time permitting expansion and contraction due to climatic conditions, and further to provide means for strengthening the joint between the interlocking ends of the rail sections.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner ashereinafter setforth, a railroad track rail, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly efiicient in its use, readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith theforegoing and other objects in,
view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as hereinafter more speci cally described and illustrated in the accom anving drawings, wherein is shown an em 0 ment of the invention, but itis to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the'scope of-the claims hereunto appended. In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Fi re 1 is a fragmentary view, in perspect ve, of one end of a track rail section, in accordancewith this invention. v
Figure 2 is a like view-of the other end of the track rail section.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, in plan, pair of track rail sections having the oppos ng ends thereofinterlocked,
Figure 4 is a section on line 44, Figure 3.
A track rail section, in accordance with this invention, comprises a base 1, a'web 2 and a head 3.
Thetrack rail section at one end is provided with an extension, referred to generally by the reference character 4, and at its other. end with an extension referred to generally by the reference character 5. The 65 extension 4: is oppositely disposed with respect to the extension 5. Each of said extensions is formed with a complete continua tion of the head 3, as indicated at 6, and also with a half continuation of the head 3 as 7 indicated at 7, and one half of the continuation 6 merges into .the continuation 7. That portion of the continuation 6, which is free of the continuation 7, has its free end inclining inwardly in a direction towards the inner face of the continuation 7, as at 8.
Each of said extensions is formed with a complete continuation of the web 2, as indicated at 9, and also with a half continuation of the web 2, as indicated at 10, and onehalf of the continuation 9 merges into the continuation 10. That portion of the continuation 9 which is free of the continuation ,10 has its free end inclined at its inner face to form a continuation of the inclined face 8. Formed integral with the continuation 10 is a continuation 12, which has its inner face ofi'set withrespect to the inner face of the continuation 10 and is of less height than the combined heights of the continuations '3 as and 10. As the continuation 12 is offset with respect to the continuation 10 a shoulder 13 is provided at the bottom of the extension and as such continuation 12 does not, extend to the continuation 7 a seat 14 is provided;
The inner face of the continuation 10 of the extension 4 is formed with a lengthwise extending dovetail groove 15 which starts at the free vertical edge of the eontinuation 10 and terminates at a point removed from the point of mergence of the continuation 10 with the continuation 9. The groove 15 is closed at its inner end. Formed integral with the inner face of the continua- W5 tion 10 of the extension 5 is a dove-tail tongue 16 which extends from the point of mergence of said continuation with the continuation 9 and terminates at a point removed from the free vertical edge of the 1 said continuation 10.
When the extension 50f eabk rail see IT at the base of its respective extension and which merges into one side of the base 1 of the track rail section; The free end of the other side of the base of the track rail section has its transverse edge formed with a pocket 18 to receive a protuberance 19 formed on the free end edgeof the flange 17 of an extension.
The inner faces of the continuations 7 and 10 are arranged at the longitudinal median of the track rail section. The inner face of the continuation 12 is positioned at one side of the longitudinal median of the track rail section. The vertical free edge of the continuations 7 and 10 are inclined, as indicated at 20, and the vertical free edge of the continuation 12 is inclined as indicated at 21. The
' continuations 9, l0 and 12 are provided with transversely extending bolt openings 22;
When the section 4 of one track rail section is mounted in interlocked engagement with respect to the section 5 of an adjacent track rail section, the bottom 23 at the con tinuation 9 seats on the shoulder 13 and said continuation 9 is reinforced by the continuation 12, thereby strengthening the joint when the extensions are connected together.
The inclined edge 8, in connection with the inner faces of the continuations 7 and 10, provides a pocket. That portion of the in clined edge 20 which opposes the inner face of the continuation 12, forms in connection with said inner face a pocket. The pocket formed by the inclined edge 8, in connection with the inner faces of the continuations 7 and 10, extends through the head and web,
and the pocket formed by the edge 20 extends froin the top of the continuation 12 to the shoulder 13. The inclined edges 8 and 20 provide two pointed projections or noses adapted to interengage in the pockets as aforesaid. pocket 18.
The adjacent ends of the two railsections are joined by relative longitudinal movement of the two with the parts held in proper register, and when joined the projcctions of one extension seat in the pockets formed in the other extension and with the tongue 16 of one extension seated in the groove 15 of the other extension.
To bind the parts securely together transversely extending bolts 94 are provided which are passed through the openings formed in the extensions, as the openings in one extension register with the openings in an opposed extension. The, bolts 24 are provided with lock nuts.
The projection 19 engages in the To further hold the extensions together, a rail chair 26'ofchannel shape is provided.
It is thought the many advantages of a track rail section constructed in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred construc tion of the track rail section is as illustrated and described, yet it is to he understood that changes in the details of construction can he had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
