Description

Oct. 15, 1963 E. ROSENFELD REMOVABLE TAB Filed Sept. 17, 1962 IN VENTOR. @saAm-z a A he/4 United States Patent Ofi ice Patented Oct. 15, 1963 3,106,719 REMOVABLE TAB Esriel Rosenfeld, 666 W. 162nd St., New York 32, N.Y. Filed Sept. 17, 1962, Ser. No. 223,896 1 Claim. (Cl. 2141) This invention relates to garments and garment making and more particularly to a novel removable tab for shirt collars.
In the past various types of tabs have been devised for shirt collars. These tabs are sewn or otherwise afiixed to each of the collar points of the collar and when secured to each other by buttoning or by snap fasteners, the tabs extend between the collar points and serve to support the knot of the necktie in a prominent manner so as to beneficially afiect the overall appearance given by the combination of the collar and necktie. These tabs have the disadvantage that they are permanently afiixed to the collar and must therefore be used at all times. Since various types of neckwear may look better without the tabs, it is not possible to properly use such shirts with permanently afiixed tabs and these types of neckwear. Further, especially with mens short sleeve shirts, while it is desirable to provide tabs for the collars for use in supporting relatively thin or highly stylized neckties, such sport shirts may look better without tabs when using other styles of neckwear. Further, when it is desired to use the shirt as a sport shirt, the upper button is left open. However, the tabs are then unfastened and hang free giving an adverse appearance to the shirt when so used as a sport shirt.
Accordingly, it is one of the objects of the present invention to permit a shirt collar to be used in conjunction with necktie-supporting tabs, yet which will enable the shirt collar to be employed without the tabs when such is desired.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a removable tab for shirt collars that can be easily attached to and detached from a shirt collar, which may be left fastened to one of the points of the shirt collar even when the shirt is being washed or otherwise cleaned or pressed, and which tabs may be simply removed from the shirt collar permitting the shirt to be used without the tabs.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a removable tab for a shirt collar which includes means for attaching the tab to the shirt collar without adversely afieoting the overall appearance of the shirt and which is designed not only to hold the tab in place but also positively secures the stay for the collar point in its desired position.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a removable tab for shirt collars that is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and install on various styles and types of shirts, which may be installed during the manufacture of the shirts without requiring any substantial additional amounts of labor, and which renders the shirt highly attractive in appearance.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of this invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds are attained by this removable tab for shirt collars, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a shirt having a removable tab for the collar of the shirt made in accordance with the concepts of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but showing the shirt with the collar points turned upwardly to illustrate in detail the construction of the removable tab;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a removable tab;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken along the plane of line 4-4 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 2 but illustrating a modified form of the invention with one end of the tab being detached;
FIG. 6 is an elevational view with the collar points turned over of a further modified form of the invention; and
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of the modified form of the removable tab of FIG. 6.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates a conventional mans shirt having a neckband-type collar 12 which is provided with collar points 14 and 16, the collar being adapted to be buttoned or otherwise secured at 18 to provide a neck closure.
As shown in FIG. 4, the collar 14} includes an outer layer of material 26, an inner layer of material 22 and a lining 24, all of which are suitably assembled together along a seam 26 concealed from the outer layer 18 when looking at the shirt collar seen in FIG. 1. A suitablyshaped stay 23, as Well as another stay 30, are disposed in the collar points 14 and 16 for reinforcing the collar points and insuring that the collar points will lie neatly in position. The stays 28 and 30 are suitably held in place between the lining 24 and the inner layer 22 by means or" the snap clip elements 32 and 34 which are of the female type and are of conventional construction and adapted to receive the male snap clip member-s 36 and 38 which are fixed to the removable tab 40. The removable tab 40 is formed of several layers sewn together of a material of suitable nature which may be similar to that from which the material of the collar or shirt 10 is made. The tab 45} carries the male snap clip elements 36 and 38 at the ends thereof so that when the male snap clip members engage the female snap clip elements 32 and 34, the removable tab 46' is secured in place holding the collar points 14- and 16 in the desired position and providing means for supporting the knot of a necktie in a prominent location to enhance the appearance of the combination shirt, collar and tie.
In lieu of the arrangement as shown in FIGS. 1 through 4, an embodiment such as that shown in FIG. 5 may be provided in which the collar 112 is provided with collar points 114 and 116 which are formed of several layers of material, the inner layer of which is provided with button holes as at 113 therein with the stays being disposed below the button hole for reinforcing the collars and for preventing the buttons as at 12%, 122, disposed on the removable tab 124, from disturbing the contours of the outer layer of material of the shirt. In use, the tab 124 may be secured by merely connecting the buttons 12! and 122 with the button holes 118. Likewise, when opening the collar, only a single one of the buttons need be attached. This permits the stay 124 to be washed with the collar. Alternatively, when it is not desired to use the stay 124, it may be completely removed and placed in the pocket of a garment of the wearer. Alternatively, the stay 124, when not in use, may be entirely removed and left in a convenient location in the wearers domicile or elsewhere.
As shown in FIG. 6, in lieu of the button-type stay 124, an alternative stay 134 may be provided having rectangular- shaped end portions 136 and 138 connected to a bar 144?. The rectangular members 136 and 133 are adapted to be positioned within the button hole 118 for locking the tab 134 in place. The tab 124 may be formed of metal, wood or preferably synthetic plastic materials, such as Celluloid, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polyethylene, or the like and may be ornamented and configurated. The tab 134 is entirely removable so that the collar may be used with or without the tab and the tab 134 may be molded or pressed so inexpensively as to be disposable.
A latitude of modification, change and substitution is intended in the foregoing disclosure, and in some instances some features of the invention Will be employed without a corresponding use of other features. Accordingly, it is appropriate that the appended claim be construed broadly and in a manner consistent with the spirit and scope of the invention herein.
1 claim:
In combination with a collar of a shirt, said collar including a neckband having collar points at the front ends thereof, a removable tab extending between said points, said collar having an outer layer of material, an inner layer of material and a lining between said outer and inner layers, a pair of stays disposed between said lining and said inner layer, snap clip elements secured to said stays and said lining, said snap clip elements each having a flange located between the inner surface of said outer layer of material and the outer-most surface of said lining holding said stays in position within said collar, said snap clip elements further including portions extending through said lining, said stays and said inner layer of material and having portions disposed on the outer surface of said inner layer, said tab having snap clip members secured thereto cooperating with and detachably secured to said snap clip elements.
