UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE V. CRANE, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,495, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed April 2-1, 1884. (No model.)
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CRANE, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Envelope, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved envelope the flap of which is provided with an enlargementto permit printing an address, &c., on the face of the envelope without printing on an uneven surface. i
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved envelope, showing it open. Fig. 2 is a like View, showing it closed.
The envelopes made heretofore have, in most instances, been provided with flaps hav ing both edges inclined from the upper corners of the envelope, and if an address is printed on one corner of the face of the envelope, or if the address printed is so large that it extends over the edge of the flap, the printing will not look well, and will not be plain, as the printed surface is not a perfectly smooth one. The gummed edge of the flap is thicker than the other parts of the envelope, and below some parts of the printed matter two layers of paper will be located, and in other parts the thickness of the gum is also added. To avoid this difficulty, I have provided one side of the flap A with an enlargement, B, and the printed matter is then printed on that part of the envelope resting on the said flap B. Thus I obtain a perfectly smooth surface for receiving the printed matter. The flap A has one edge in clined from one corner of the envelope 0 to the center of the free edge of the flap, and from the said center to the opposite end of the envelope the free edge of the flap is parallel with the longitudinal edges of the envel ope, and the corresponding end edge of the flap is parallel with the end edge of the envelope. The two side flaps, that are permanently gummed together when the envelope is made, are cut square at the top, so that the edges are parallel with the bottom of the envelope, whereby, when the flap A B is closed down, the jointwill beclose and the edge even with the top edges of the side flaps. The flap is gummed on the inner surface along the edges in the usual manner.
Having thus described myinvention, Ielaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, an envelope provided with a flap the free edge of which is inclined from one corner of the envelope to the transverse center line of the flap, and from this point extends to the opposite cnd of the envelope, parallel with the longitudinal edges of the envelope, and having the top edge of the side flap that is to be under the straight longitudinal edge of the top flap formed parallel and even with the top of the envelope when closed, substantially as shown and described.
GEO. XV. CRANE.
