UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB J. LINDAUER, OF NEI/V YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE. BUTTON OR STUD.
SPECIFICATION mng part of Letters Patent No. 310,293, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed October 7, 1884. (No model.)
20 all whoml it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB J. LINDAUEE, of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Buttons and Studs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure I. is a rear View of one of my improved buttons. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine, shown partly closed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, shown in position as secured in a button-hole, and part being broken away.
The object ol this invention is to promote convenience in the use of detachable buttons and studs.
The invention relates to a detachable button or stud constructed with a back plate provided with a spring, and slotted to receive the bent parts of two J shaped bars, which have teeth in their adjacent convex surfaces, where by both the said bars will be turned by the movement of either, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents the rim of a button or stud, which is formed upon or securely connected with the back plate, I3, and to which is secured the stone or face-plate C when used.
In the back plate, B, are formed three slots to receive the curved parts of the J-Shaped bars D, which form the shank and foot of the button, the parts E of the back plate between the said slots serving as pivots for the bent parts of the bars D to turn upon, the said bars being held in position, when adjusted, by a spring, F, secured to the back plate, B. Upon the adjacent outer or convex surfaces of the curved parts of the bars D are formed teeth G, which mesh into eachother, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that either of the said bars will be turned by the movement of the other bar.
In applying the button or stud the long armsof the J-shaped bars D are brought together and are passed through the buttonhole. Then, by pressing the end of either of the short arms of the bars D outward, both the said bars will be turned to bring their long arms into a position parallel with the back plate, B.
In detaching the button the long arm ot' either of the bars D is pushed inward, which brings both the said bars into the position shown in Fig. 2, so that they can be readily withdrawn from the button-hole.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a detachable button or stud, the combinatiou, with the slotted back plate, B, and the spring F, of the J-shaped bars D, having teeth G iu their adjacent convex surfaces, 'substantially as herein shown and described, whereby both the said bars will be turned by the movement of either, as set forth.
2; A detachable button or stud provided with the Jshaped bars D, made substantially as herein shown and described, with teeth G upon their convex surfaces, as set forth.
3. In a detachable button or stud, the combination, with the back plate thereof, of curved lockingbars toothed upon their convex surfaces, and held to be partially revolved in contact with each other upon said back plate, substantially as herein shown and described.
JACOB J. LINDAUER.
