COMBINED SEAT, DRAWER. STEP, AND SHELVING FOR STORES.- No. 310,149. Patented Dec; 30, 1884.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS OHILOOTT PROTZMAN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
COMBINED SEAT, DRAWER, STEP, AND SHELVING FOR STORES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,149, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed July 21, 1882. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS O. PROTZMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination of Seats, Drawers, Steps, and Shelving for Stores; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to economize space in stores and other places, so that sofas, stools, ladders, and other cumbersome articles may be dispensed with, and increased storing capacity, more light, better ventilation, and a ready means of access to the shelving furnished. This. object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which is given a front perspective View of my device.
A represents a base made in such a man ner as to form seats A and step B. In the base are made the drawers 0 c c e, of such size and shape as will conform to the dimensions of thebase. Above said base, and within the frame D, are one or more shelves, OO O C.
To construct my device, I first make an elevation, serving as aline of seats, A, at aproper height and distance from the fioor and wall to accommodate the drawers and step B.
Above and receding from the first elevation or line of seats A, 1 construct a step, B, at such height and distance as to accommodate the drawers 0 e and insure proper width of the step A. Above the base, and at the proper distance back to allow for the step B, I construct the casing D, containing a series of shelves, 0 O O C.
It is not absolutely essential that the shelving or casing and the base be made all in one, as the former may be made separate from and resting upon the base, so that, when advisable, the base may be used by itself for other useful purposes.
My invention is especially adapted to use in boot and shoe stores.
Heretofore ithas been necessary to use stools, sofas, ladders, and various other cumbersome articles for seats and as ameans of access to the upper shelves. Such articles occupy much space which might be utilized for storage, light, and ventilation, besides requiring more or less care to keep in order and repair.
By the use of my invention the necessity of using the above-named articles is avoided, and additional storage capacity, ventilation, and light, and a ready means of access to the shelving, are furnished.
By placing two of my devices back to back in the center of a room, additional seating and storage capacity is supplied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. As an article of manufacture, a stand, such as D, provided with seats, steps, and receptacles for goods, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, shelving or casing having a base provided with seats, steps, and receptacles for goods, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS OHIIZCOTT PROTZMAN.
