BELT- FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,808, dated December 23, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMEs THOMPSON, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in 5 Belt-Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

My improved belt-hook is composed of a 10 single piece of wire bent to form a series of holding-bars with projecting hooked fingers, the holding-bars and points of the fingers being upon the same side of the belt. For the production of my improved hook wire in long 1 5 lengths or 011 rolls may be bent by machinery, and be provided with fingers of the proper length, and thereafter the bent strip may be cut into short lengths to correspond with the width of the belt to be joined. The construc- .20 tion of my improved hook is such that, if desired, the abutting ends of the belt may be doublefastened, each end-of the belt having applied to it one of the hooks, the fingers of each hook engaging the opposite end of the 2 5 belt and fitting between the lingers of the other hook.

Figure 1 represents one of my belt-hooks; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 represents one of my improved hooks applied to 3 a belt, the dotted lines showing a second hook applied as it may be for doublefastening the ends of the belt. I

In the production of belt-hooks embodying my invention a piece of wire, taken preferably 3 5 from a roll or coil, is bent at intervals to form lateral branches, all at one side, to constitute fingers a, which at their ends are all turned are provided with holes, as at d e. The

hooked ends b, in the condition shown in Fig. 1, are inserted from the outer face of one end of a belt, B, through the holes (I, and then through the holes 6 of the opposed end of the belt material, from its inner side, as in Fig. 3, and thereafter the hooked ends of the fingers are drawn up through the holes 6 and bent over snugly, as represented by three of the fingers in Fig. 3.

As represented by dotted lines, Fig. 8, a second hook may be added, if desired.

I claim.

As an improved article of manufacture, a belt-hook composed of wire bent to form laterally-projecting fingers provided with hooks, the fingers extending from the holding-bars being bent down to form parts a, substantially as shown and described, to extend from one to the opposite side of the belt, as set forth.
