AUGUSTUS TRAVER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED GLOVE STRETCHER AND MEASURE..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,666, dated December 23, 1884. Application tiled January 7, 1884. (o model.)
To all whom` it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS TRAVER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Glove Stretcher and Measure, of which the following is afull, elear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved glove stretcher and measure for measuring the width of the hand across the knuckles.
The invention consists in a glove-stretcher on which a glove measure or scale is fixed.
rihe invention also consists in the combination, with a glove-stretcher on which a measure is formed, of a fixed clip and sliding clip, between which clips the hand is placed for measuring it.
Reference is to bc had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view oi' my improved combined glove stretcher and measure. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of one of the levers forming the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation ol" the sliding clip ofthe measure.
rlhe glove-stretcher is made in the usual manner of two levers, A and A, pivoted or hinged to each other.
On the outer surface of one of the levers-a A, for instance-a measure, B, is fastened, at one end of which a clip or stud, C, is secured on the lever A in such a manner as to project from the same. Grooves care formed in the sides of the lever A, and the ends of a plate or clip, D, held to slide over the measure B, and bent into the grooves c. The bent ends ofthe plate D hold the said plate on the lever A, at the same time permitting the plate or clip to slide on the lever. The plate or clip D is provided with an upwardly-projecting plate like the clip C. A spring-strip, E, is secured to the under side of the clip D, to hold it in any desired position on the lever A. The scale or measure B, secured on the outer surface of the lever A, is subdivided, so that it shows the various numbers of gloves for corresponding widths of hands.
The usual glove-measures have .been made of iiexible material only, and were adapted to be passed around the hand at the knuckles,
My improved measure is formed on a rigid object. One side of the hand at the knuckles is placed against the clip C, and the other clip, D, is pressed lirmly against the other side of the hand. The number at the inner side of the clip D shows the gl0ve-number for the hand.
I am aware that a glove-stretcher has been heretofore provided with flexible loop or measurer arranged in the handle of the stretcher so as to be drawn out for use and returned in the handle by a spring, the said loop or measurer being attached to a guide having an index working in a slot of the handle, the outer surface of which is provided with ascale; and I am also aware that a shoemakers measure, consisting ot' a graduated bar provided with a stationary block and sliding block, the latter being held on the bar by having its sides bent inwardly into grooves formed in the sides of the said bar, is old, and I therefore do not claim such invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As an improved article of manufacture,
a combined glove stretcher and measure con sisting of two hinged levers, one of which is provided on its outer surface with a measurer, B, a stationary clip, C, and a sliding clip, D, as set forth.
2. In a combined glove stretcher and measure, the combination, with the lever A, pro vided with the measurer B and the longitudinal side grooves, c, of the stationary clip C, and the sliding clip D, having the sides bent into the grooves ofthe lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a combined glove stretcher and measure, the combination, with the lever A, provided with the measurer B and the longitudinal grooves a, and the stationary clip C, of the sliding clip D, having its sides bent into the grooves ofthe lever, and the spring E,se eured to the under side of the clip, substantially as herein shown and described.
AUGUSTUS TRAVER.
