PERMUTATlON PADLOCK.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,152, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed March 21, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA WV. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a case constructed in two dish or equivalently shaped parts, which close together on a central pivot, wh ereon they may turn to open and close, a hasp consisting of two rigid arms of the case, one to each part, respectively, together with two or more lockingstuds projecting through one of the sides of the case from the interior, where they connect with sockets and grooves in the opposite side of the case, with which they must be set in a certain position by turning them on their axes to permit the case to be shifted for opening, the said positions being indicated by numbers or marks of dials on the exterior of the case known to the operator.
For changing the order of the numbers or marks by which the lock is to be, opened the studs are made in separable or adjustable parts, which can be shifted with relation to each other without opening the ease of the look, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an interior view of the part of the case having the grooves in which the locking-studs work. Fig. 2 is an exterior View of the front side of the case. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lock. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation, and Fig. 5 represents end elevations of the lockingstuds on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of a locking-stud.
I make the case of two shallow cup-shaped parts of equal size, a b, to be fitted together at their edges 0, and fastened by a center pivot, d, with riveted heads or a head and nut, to hold the said parts securely, but allowing them to turn one upon the other. The edges 0 will be grooved and tongued or otherwise matched together for making a waterproof and unpickable joint. Each part has a rigid arm, 0, projecting from its periphery, and forming half of the hasp, and being relatively (1Y0 model.)
arranged so that the ends will abut when the two parts of the case are properly adjusted, forming a complete hasp substantially of the form of the ordinary hasp of a padlock. One of the said arms is preferably constructed with a notch,.f, and the other with a corresponding point to fit in the notch, so that one will be supported by the other against lateral displacement. The front part of the case has two or more perforations through its side, adapted for a stud-pin, g, to pass through them-to the interior of the case, said perforations being surrounded by a dial, h, printed, engraved, or otherwise wrought on the surface of the case, and said pins having a head or thumb-bit, g, by which to turn them. The part b of the case has two or more circular sockets, t, on its interior face, which coincide with the perforations in the case a for studs y, when the two parts of the case are set together, so that the arms 6 connect with each other, and form the complete hasp. The bits of studs 9 then extending into these sockets will prevent the case from turning and opening the hasp; but out of each socket there is an ope11- ing into a groove or channel, 7', of narrower dimensions than the socket, or to a simple guide-flange extending in the direction the stud-pins will swing in when the hasp opens, and the bit portions 7; of the stud-pins projecting into said sockets are flattened, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, so that when said flattened portions are turned to coincide with the grooves or guides they will escape from the sockets, and the case will turn and freely open the hasp.
For enabling the operator to set the studpins in coincidence with the grooves a mark will be employed on the collar Z that shall register with one of the marks of the dial known to the operator when said studs are properly set for opening the lock. The studpins are to be secured in the part a of the case by flange m or equivalent device inside of the case, the stud-pins being inserted in the holes of part 1) before the case is closed.
For changing the order of the unlocking-re ister the said bits 7; of the stud-pins are made to screw into the other parts 9, to be adj ustable by turning in said parts g, either by beand will use them in practice, or at least that ing taken out and readjusted or by turning the pinsg by the heads with a pair of nippers at any time when the hasp is open or partly open, and the bits is bear against the flanges of the grooves or guidewaysj, so that they will be held fast while the parts 9 are turned. The friction of the bits in the pins will prevent them from shifting, or the pins may be taken out occasionally and packed by means of thin washers of paper or metal, to be placed between the collars a of said parts and the ends of the stud-pins, which prevents them from screwing back to the same position as before; To open the lock for so shifting these bits 70 one of the heads of the pivot (2 must be struck off with a hammer and coldchisel or other suitable means, and a new pivot will be used to closethe case again when the pivot-bolt is headed at both ends; but in order that the pivot-bolt may be fastened with a nut, and at the same time to prevent the look from being opened, I propose to have the center socket and stud hubs or bosses 0 0" of the two parts of the case connect by a bayonetcatch device, consisting of vertical grooves 19 and horizontal grooves qin one of said bosses, and studs 8 on the other, which are so arranged that they will not disconnect except when the cases are shifted to the position for opening, so that although the pivot-bolt may be taken out the lock cannot be opened without knowledge of the combination.
It will be seen that the lock is contrived for very cheap construction, at the same time be ing very substantial and reliable, there being no fitting required except for the stud-pins, the, dials, and the pivot (1, unless it may be preferred to turn the edges 0 for more perfect fitting than the castings will afford; but well made castings will serve for excellent locks without such fitting. I
The case will preferably be made in malleable cast-iron for cheap looks; but cast-steel or bronze may be employed, if preferred.
It is to be understood that the sockets i may be dispensed with, the grooves, channels, or guides j only being really necessary, particularly if the locking-studs are well fitted in the holes of case a, through which they pass, and I do not mean to be limited to the use of them; but I prefer them for a betterconstruction, particularly as they do not add to the cost,
portion of the rim or flange forming them that merges in the rim or flange forming the groove or guide, and will only use one flange of the groove or guide 7' when preferred, in which case the bits 70 will only have one flat side, as seen in the right hand of Fig. 5, instead of the two flat sides, as in the left hand of said figure, which are required when the two guiding-flanges are used, forming a groove. (See Fig. 1.)
I desire it to be understood that the two parts of the case are alike in size and form; also, that they are circular, and are pivoted together at the center, so that they turn on each other without opening any portion of the case and exposing any interior part or breaking the symmetry of the form by causing any part to project over or beyond any other part, thus making a neater and also more substantial and better look than if otherwise constructed and pivoted together.
I make no claim to a lock consisting of two circular parts, a I), each having an arm forming a hasp, except in connection with my improved locking devices.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The improved permutation-lock consist ing of a case of two parts, a I), each having an arm, 6, and being fastened together by a pivotbolt, on which they may turn with relation to each other, and two or more locking-studs, g, turning in one of the parts, and arranged with relation to sockets and grooves and guides in the other part of the case, for fastening and unfastening the lock, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a lock, of two parts, a and 12, forming a case, each having an arm, 6, forming a hasp, and both being equal in size and form, also circular, and also being pivoted together at the center to turn on each other for opening and closing the hasp, and provided with fastening devices to secure the hasp in the closed position, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a permutation-lock, of the case and hasp consisting of the parts a and b, each having an arm, 0, and one having stud-pin holes and dials h, and the other having sockets i and grooves or guides j, the pivotbolt d, connecting said parts, and the lockingstuds 9, substantially as described.
4:. The locking-studs having flattened bit 70, in combination with the case a b, pivoted together, and having holes in one part for the locking-studs, and sockets and grooves or guides in the other part for the bits of the locking-studs, substantially as described.
5. The locking-studs g, having adjustable flattened bits 70, in combination with the case a b, pivoted together, and having holes in one part for the locking-studs, and sockets and IIO grooves or guides in the other part for the bits of the locking-studs, substantially as described.
6. The locking-studs g, in combination with the case consisting of parts a and b, pivoted together, and provided with holes, sockets, and grooves or guides, as described, the said studs having collar Z, and being fastened inside of the case by flange m or equivalent devices, as setforth.
7.
