PATENT Qrricn.
PADLQCKs SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,586, da ed April 4, 1905.
Application filed l'uly '7. 1904. Serial No. 215,628.
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. MonnLAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newhaven, in. the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks, and more particularly to that class of locks commonly known as padlocks.
The object of this invention is to provide novel means in connection with the lock whereby it will be impossible for any one to twist the same from the staple to which it is secured.
Briefly described, my improvement in padlocks resides in providing an annular casingor shell which is rotatably mounted upon the body portion of the padlock and is freely rotatable in either direction without engaging any portion of the locking mechanism, this shell or casing being preferably constructed of sheet metal or the like, whereby the cost of manufacture will be reduced to a minimum. The staple that I preferably employ has a swiveled head, through which a hasp is adapted to pass.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart oi. this application, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 isa frontelevation of alock, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a de tail perspective view of the annular shell or casing. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the swiveled head of the staple.
In carrying my invention into elieot l preferably construct my improvement upon padlocks the body portions of whichare annular in form, the locking member being located in the body portion of the lock and operated from a keyhole formed in the bottom of said padlock.
The reference-numeral 1 indicates a padlock of the above description, which is annular in form and has pivoted on its top, as indicated at 2, a hasp, by which the padlock is secured to a staple or bolt, and in the accompanying drawings l have illustrated a form of staple which I prefer toemploy, the staple consisting of a shank portion l, which is screwthreaded upon its one end, as indicated at 5, andis adapted to receive anut 6. The end of the shank portion 4c is provided with an annular recess '1", in which is mounted a contracted shank portion 8 of the head 9 of the staple, this head being provided with an aperture 10, through which the hasp is adapted to pass. The contracted shank portion 8 is provided with an annular groove 11, and in the shank portion of the staple is secured a screw 12., which is adapted to engage in the annular groove 11 and prevent the removal of the head 9 from the shank portion at and at the same time permitting it to rotate.
My improvement upon the padlock resides in providing an annular sl ell or casing 14:, which is flanged upon its upper and lower edges, as indicated at 15 and 16, these flanges preventing the shell or casing from being detached from the lock and at the same time permitting the shell to revolve. In this form of padlock, wherein the body portion 1 is annular, a keyhole 17 is provided in the lower end 18 of the lock, whereby the insertion o1 a key within the padlock will not interfere with the rotation of the annular shell 14. in case the keyhole should he made in the walls of the body portion 1 a similar hole may be formed in the annular shell or casing 14, and when it is desired to unlock the padlock this annular shell or casing 1 L may be revolved until the keyhole of said shell registers with the keyhole of the body portion of the lock, at which time the key may be inserted.
It will thus be seen from the above construction that it will be impossible for any one to place a wrench upon the body portion of the lock and twist the same from the staple or bolt upon which it is secured, the annular portion ot'the loekand preventing a grip from beinghzul upon the padlock. .lncasea crowbar or rodshould be placed in the opening formed by the hasp I have provided a swivel-headed staple which will prevent the loclc from being twisted or pried from th staple in which itis secured. It will also be noted that the annular shell or easing It maybe placed upon permutation-locks or any locl; which has a circular or annular body portion.
The many other ad van tag-cs obtained by the use of. my improved device will be readily apparent from the .toreg ing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
it will be noted that various further changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from. the general spirit of f my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in
1. in combination with a lock having an annular body portion, a rotatable shell, inw ard ly-extend i ng flanges formed integral with said shell, the shell being rotatable on the lock and embracing the ends of the lock, the lock being operative independent of any movement of the shell.
The combination with a lock inclosed in a complete casing, of a shell mounted upon the locl; and covering the casing thereof, the said shell, being freely rotatable in either direction without engaging any portion of the locking mechanism.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. MORELAND.
